Common problems we fix in Canada

Sometimes a filter is taken out and never put back. A missing filter leaves an open route into the system and on into the ductwork.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • Filters that come out of the sink still dirty
  • Grease collecting in the filter channels
  • Drips falling from the filters onto equipment
  • Blocked baffle filters

If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Wellow School or anywhere near Canada, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.

Questions to ask before you book

  • How VAT is shown on the quote
  • What’s included in the scope, part by part
  • Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed

Grease filter exchange in Canada, done properly

Washing filters in the kitchen sink is messy and easily missed on a busy week. An exchange service means clean filters arrive and greasy ones leave, so the canopy is never left without filters. The work covers baffle filters, mesh filters and restaurants and pubs, and the jobs we see most are grease building up behind the canopy filters and gaps where filters have been removed.

For a kitchen in or near Canada, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with pictures of the work, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

What grease filter exchange can’t fix

We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what grease filter exchange will not do:

  • A noisy or failed extract fan
  • Odours from the discharge that filters won’t stop
  • Grease behind the filters that a swap cannot remove

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we’ll say what we think before booking.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

Between visits

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:

  • Keep canopy surfaces wiped down
  • Do not let the full clean slip because filters are changed
  • Keep the canopy clear for exchange visits
  • Never cook with the extract switched off

Nothing changes for your staff, except one less greasy job. Make sure we can reach the canopy on exchange day and let us know of any changes to opening hours.

Clean filters plus regular full cleans keep the system in good health. A maintenance plan that covers both keeps everything on track.

Part by part

Baffle filters

Baffle filters are a common choice for commercial canopies. They do not clean themselves as the collected grease builds up between the blades.

School, care home and staff kitchens

Even kitchens with fixed meal times build up grease though typically at a gentler pace.

Canada: your questions answered

Which environmental health team covers Canada?

Kitchens in Canada are inspected by Test Valley council’s environmental health officers. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

Can the work in Canada be done at night or at weekends?

Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. The work in Canada can fit around your hours. Let us know the hours you’re closed and we will book within them.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. The law sets the duty, and TR19® is the recognised benchmark for meeting it. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, the responsible person must reduce fire risk, and without records, many insurers may refuse or reduce a claim.

Do you recommend a next date?

Yes. The interval depends on how much the system is used and what we find, and we explain the reasoning on the report.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we will suggest a schedule and quote for it.

Do you provide a certificate or report?

Yes. It’s the record insurers and inspectors ask to see: a dated report with pictures, listing the work and any areas we couldn’t reach.

What happens to the waste?

We take it away when we go. While we work, it’s kept contained so the area stays clean.

Do you work in Canada?

Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of South East England, Canada included.

The process

Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and it goes on the report too. All told, the work takes a short visit, depending on how many filters the canopies hold. Somewhere as small as Canada, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.

  1. We record the number, size and type of your filters.
  2. We set the interval with you.
  3. On each visit, we remove the greasy filters.
  4. Clean filters go in and we check they sit snugly.
  5. The dirty filters leave with us and the next visit is booked.

Before we arrive

  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions

Advice

What affects the cost of grease filter exchange

Your quote is based on your site. We consider:

  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • What state the system is in

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, which can make the next visit longer. If you’re unsure, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

What to send for a quote

When you contact us, these details help:

  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • Problems your staff have spotted

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Add the site type and your opening hours, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Canada kitchens: local notes

There are about 5 restaurants, cafés and works canteens within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Canada, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Clogged filters slow the airflow, and busy kitchens like these clog them fast. Kitchens in Canada get their food hygiene inspections from Test Valley council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Canada sits within the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

Historic houses near Canada, such as Landford Manor about 2 miles north-west, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes. Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Tatchbury Mount Hospital (about 3.5 miles south-east), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.

Canada is about 5 miles north-west of Totton, in Hampshire. We provide grease filter exchange for commercial premises of every kind in Canada and the rest of Hampshire. 683 places in Hampshire are on our list, large and small. Our Southampton page covers sites nearby, about 9 miles away.
