Kitchen extracts in Up Nately

The FSA’s data shows about 5 pubs and bars registered within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Up Nately. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Up Nately sits within the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. In Up Nately, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Basingstoke and Deane council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.

Bursars and site managers at schools such as Robert May's School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. A hospital like Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, about 5.2 miles west, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.

Up Nately is about 5 miles east of Basingstoke, in Hampshire. How we handle extract fan cleaning in Up Nately

We have been trading since 2009. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers roof-mounted fans, discharge points and centrifugal fans, and common reasons people get in touch are a noisy fan that has got louder over time and a motor area thick with grease.

In a village or hamlet like Up Nately, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are typically a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.

The paperwork matters as much as the work. Each visit is written up with photos, covering the work done, any areas we couldn’t access and a recommended next date. File it in your maintenance log so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

What a clean will not put right

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • A motor that has burnt out
  • A faulty speed controller or isolator
  • Damaged fan blades

If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think.

Where we work

  • Roof-mounted fans
  • Centrifugal fans
  • Axial fans
  • In-line fans
  • Discharge points
  • Fan housings

For landlords and multi-site operators

When the building owner and the occupier are different, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare in Up Nately and across Hampshire. Work can be phased by floor, building or site to keep disruption down.

Questions from Up Nately

Which fire authority looks after Up Nately?

That’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Do you work in villages like Up Nately?

Yes. Up Nately is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

What does extract fan cleaning cost?

Every site is different, so each gets its own fixed quote. For a quote, call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and tell us about the site and its opening hours.

Does the law say we must follow TR19?

No. The law sets the duty; TR19® is the benchmark used to show it’s met. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has to manage fire risk, and without records, many insurers may refuse or reduce a claim.

What’s TR19?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes, 24/7. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, with the emergency line covering every other hour.

Do you work out of hours?

Yes, and that’s how we prefer to work. The visit is timed for when the area is not in use, whether that is late evening, overnight or a weekend.

What makes a kitchen extract fan vibrate?

Build-up on the impeller is a frequent reason, since uneven grease makes it run out of balance. Worn bearings and motor problems are others, which our report will flag.

How the visit works

There are three stages on the day: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, and that takes a few hours where there are several fans or heavy deposits. A few photos of the system help us make the most of a visit to a place like Up Nately.

  1. We locate the fan and plan how to reach and isolate it.
  2. We isolate the power before opening the housing.
  3. We scrape the heavy grease from the blades and housing.
  4. The fan is degreased, taking care around the motor.
  5. It’s closed up, run, checked and photographed for the report.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use

Getting a quote

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Add the site type and your opening hours, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Leave it or put it right?

A greasy fan has to work harder to move the same air. Less air is pulled from the kitchen, so heat and smoke linger, while the motor runs under more strain. Somewhere as small as Up Nately, losing a kitchen or building to a fault is felt by everyone who uses it.

A single site or a whole portfolio, the quote is built the same way: the work involved, the access and the timing. The price is fixed before we start.

What you get with us

  • Full insurance on every job
  • Work around your opening hours, with 24/7 emergency cover
  • We diagnose before we treat
  • Accredited under CHAS and SafeContractor, with ISO 9001

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We will take a look and give you a fixed quote.

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

What we’re called out for in Up Nately

A fan collects more grease when the filters let more through. When filters don’t seal, grease goes straight through to the fan, so the fan takes far more than it should.

Look out for any of the following:

  • A fan coated in grease inside its housing
  • A fan motor running hot under a coat of grease
  • An extract fan that vibrates or rattles
  • A smell of hot grease from the extract

If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Church of St. Stephen or elsewhere in Up Nately, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event.

Our hiring checklist

Different parts, different methods

Kitchens with long cooking hours

Kitchens that cook 12 to 16 hours a day put the most grease through their fans. BESA guidance sets at least 3-monthly cleaning for that level of use, fan included.

Inline duct fans

Inline fans sit within the duct run, often above a ceiling. We get to them through the duct or casing, once they’re isolated.
