About our extract fan cleaning in Fleet

Cleaning removes grease, not wear. If we find worn bearings, a struggling motor or damage to the impeller, we will tell you and fan repair or replacement is something we also do. You will know whether the fan just needed cleaning or something more. Common call-outs are for hot, greasy smells near the fan and a fan that hums, whines or rumbles, across discharge points, axial fans and in-line fans.

Around a town like Fleet, extract cleaning usually means a restaurant, pub, takeaway or the kitchen of a school or care home. Each has a canopy, filters, ductwork and a fan to keep clear of grease, and each is cleaned to the same TR19® standard.

We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we are fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

Fixed quotes for extract fan cleaning in Fleet

You’ll get a fixed price before we start. It’s based on:

  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • How big the system is
  • The condition we find in the survey

What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why we survey first, from pictures or on site, and the price is agreed before any work starts.

What to send for a quote

Many jobs can be priced from photos and some basics. Useful things to send:

  • Any previous report or certificate
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • A few general shots of the system

Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before work begins.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We’ll take a look and give you a fixed quote.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Leave it or put it right?

A fan that fails mid-service can stop a kitchen cooking. Grease is often where fan trouble begins, so cleaning the fan helps keep it working. We also offer a 24/7 emergency callout if the worst happens. Whatever the system, dirt and wear only get worse.

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we will go through it with you.

What happens on the day

Before we leave, we walk the area with whoever is on site. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and the same goes into the written report. The visit takes an hour or two for one fan, longer when it’s hard to reach. Work in Fleet is typically booked after closing, early in the morning or on a closed day.

  1. The fan is found and its type, access and isolation checked.
  2. We isolate the power before opening the housing.
  3. Grease is scraped off the impeller blades and casing.
  4. The fan is degreased, taking care around the motor.
  5. It’s closed up, run, checked and photographed for the report.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time

Related advice

What the work involves, part by part

Wall fans

A wall fan pushes the air straight outside. We isolate it, then clean the blades and housing.

Roof-mounted fans

On a roof, the air is cooler and grease drops out faster. The impeller and housing are scraped and degreased.

Signs you need extract fan cleaning in Fleet

Grease builds up unevenly on the blades. Over time, that imbalance shakes the fan and puts strain on the bearings. Left too long, grease turns into wear.

What we are most often called out for:

  • A fan shaking on its mounts
  • Thick grease on the impeller and casing
  • Less air being pulled from the kitchen
  • A noisy fan that has got louder over time

Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Fleet is Fleet Community Hospital, about 1 mile north-west.

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

What extract fan cleaning cannot fix

Not every problem is solved by extract fan cleaning, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not put right:

  • A cracked or broken impeller (it needs replacing)
  • An undersized fan that can’t cope
  • Grease in the canopy and ductwork

If you’re not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Centrifugal fans

  • Roof-mounted fans
  • In-line fans
  • Axial fans

FAQs for Fleet

Who inspects food businesses in Fleet?

The local authority for Fleet is Hart council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Fleet?

That is Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.

Can you fix a fan that is worn out?

Cleaning removes grease, but it can’t fix worn parts. Where the fan needs repair or replacement, we can do that too, with a fixed quote first.

What does TR19 mean?

It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping and expects a risk-based approach.

Does the law say we must follow TR19?

No. The law sets the duty, and TR19® is the recognised benchmark for meeting it. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has to manage fire risk, and without records, many insurers may refuse or reduce a claim.

How often should the extract fan be cleaned?

With the whole system, at intervals set by BESA guidance: every 3, 6 or 12 months. Some fans need attention sooner.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not typically. Out-of-hours visits keep the disruption down. Larger jobs can be phased over several visits so parts stay in use.

Who is the responsible person?

It depends on the building. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, which can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, an FM or a managing agent.

Grease, kitchens and Fleet

Food Standards Agency records include about 16 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 5 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses across Fleet and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. Fleet sits within the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. Kitchens in Fleet get their food hygiene inspections from Hart council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

Historic houses near Fleet, such as Farnham Castle about 4.1 miles south, are a reminder that older buildings with event kitchens can have long, awkward duct routes. If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near Fleet Methodist Church or elsewhere in Fleet, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event.
