Extract fan cleaning in The Hale, done properly

A clean fan isn’t a repaired fan. Anything that looks worn or damaged goes on the report, and we also repair and replace extract fans. You’ll know whether the fan just needed cleaning or something more. If you have a smell of hot grease from the extract and a fan that hums, whines or rumbles, we can help.

In a London area like The Hale, a kitchen extract often passes through shared space on its way out: a riser, a service void, the floors above. Grease in a duct like that is a fire risk to the whole building, not just the kitchen, which is why keeping it clean to TR19® matters.

For insurers and inspectors, the record counts. That is why every job is written up in a report with photos, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

Between visits

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:

  • Listen for new noises or vibration from the fan
  • Check the report shows the fan was cleaned
  • Flag smoke lingering at the canopy
  • Check filters are seated before cooking

The photo report shows the fan before and after cleaning. It notes what was done and anything that couldn’t be reached, along with the recommended next clean date.

The fan stays cleaner when less grease gets past the canopy. Keep the grease filters clean, fitted and in place, and replace any that are damaged.

What affects the quote in The Hale

You will get a fixed price before we start. It takes into account:

  • The times the site is available
  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • Where the site is and how we reach it

No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all play a part.

Helping us quote

Many jobs can be priced from photos and some basics. Useful things to send:

  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • A few general shots of the system

We do not publish a price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from pictures or a survey, then send a fixed quote. To start, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos.

What we are called out for in The Hale

Poor filters mean a greasier fan. When filters do not seal, grease goes straight through to the fan, so the fan takes far more than it should.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • A fan that hums, whines or rumbles
  • A fan left out of previous cleans
  • Thick grease on the impeller and casing
  • An extract fan that vibrates or rattles

A hospital like Edgware Community Hospital, about 1 mile south-west, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.

What your quote should include

  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
  • Proof of insurance
  • Whether VAT is included
  • Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report

Choosing a duct cleaning contractor

Why act early in The Hale

A fan clean in The Hale doesn’t take long: the work takes a few hours where there are several fans or heavy deposits. Waiting adds vibration, wear and a harder clean. In The Hale, a planned overnight visit is much easier than closing unexpectedly.

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we will explain each part.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that is where we come in.

When it’s something else

In fairness, there are a few things this work won’t fix:

  • A failed motor or worn bearings (that needs a fan repair or replacement)
  • Wiring faults to the fan
  • Grease in the duct and canopy before the fan (those need a full TR19 clean)

Not sure which it is? You can ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Roof-mounted fans
  • Discharge points
  • Axial fans
  • Centrifugal fans
  • Fan housings
  • In-line fans

What happens on the day

We turn up at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. The work itself takes an hour or two for most single fans. Night and weekend working is normal for us in London, and a site in The Hale is no exception.

  1. First we locate the fan and agree how it’s safely isolated.
  2. The fan is isolated so it cannot start while we work.
  3. The impeller and the housing around it are scraped clean.
  4. Blades, housing and the area around the motor are degreased with care.
  5. The fan is put back into service, checked and photographed.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
  • Tell us where we can park and unload
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool

Each kitchen extract among them ends at a fan, and grease on the impeller strains the motor. The Hale questions

Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in The Hale in the summer holidays?

Yes, holiday work suits schools best. Around The Hale, the Food Standards Agency lists about 29 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Just call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with your term dates and we’ll plan around them.

What do you need to know about parking in The Hale?

We plan it in advance, so let us know about loading bays, permits and access rules at the building. Where restrictions apply in the day, an evening or overnight visit typically gets round them.

What’s TR19?

BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It is not law, but it’s the benchmark.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19® is the benchmark for showing that grease in the extract is under control.

Do you work with multi-site operators?

Yes. You deal with one contact for every site in our area, with visits on a regular schedule.

What does extract fan cleaning cost?

We do not publish prices, because the cost depends on the job: how big it is, what state it’s in, how we reach it and the working hours. We fix the price before we start.

Can the work be done while we’re closed?

Yes. Much of our work happens in the evening, overnight or at weekends, so you do not have to close during trading.

Which sectors do you work in?

We work for restaurants, pubs, hotels, schools, colleges, hospitals, care homes, offices and shops, plus food production and leisure sites.
