How the job changes from site to site
Wall fans
With little duct before them, wall fans collect grease fast. They can need regular attention, which grease readings will show.
Kitchens with long cooking hours
A fan in a long-hours kitchen runs for most of the day, so grease and wear build up together. Regular cleans help it keep going.
Extract fan cleaning in Little Portugal
We’ve been trading since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, we clean to BESA TR19® Grease, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. If you’re dealing with thick grease on the impeller and casing and grease stains around the discharge, we can help.
London kitchens are often tucked into basements or the back of a building, and the duct may run up through several floors before it discharges at the roof. In Little Portugal, as elsewhere in the capital, a long duct run means more access points to open and more grease to remove.
It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

What else we do in Little Portugal
Do you need extract fan cleaning in Little Portugal?
The fan sits at the end of the grease’s journey. The grease that’s left lands on the blades and the casing where the spinning blades spread it around.
Common reasons sites call us are:
- Burning smells from the fan area
- Grease escaping from the fan outlet
- Less air being pulled from the kitchen
- A heavily greased fan housing
For schools such as Platanos College, kitchen extract cleaning is typically booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.
What to look for in a quote
- When the next visit should be, and why
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- Proof of accreditation you can verify
- Exactly which parts of the system are covered
What affects the quote in Little Portugal
You will get a fixed price before we start. It takes into account:
- The times the site is available
- How big the system is
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
- Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you’re unsure, ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email for straight advice and a fixed quote.
What we need to know
What to send for a quote:
- The postcode and the type of business
- Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
Getting a quote does not take long. Send a few details and pictures, and we typically reply with a fixed quote within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.
Kitchen extracts in Little Portugal
According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 132 pubs, bars and clubs and about 27 hotels and B&Bs within about 1.5 miles of central Little Portugal. Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. Kitchens in Little Portugal get their food hygiene inspections from Lambeth council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. Fire safety in Little Portugal falls to London Fire Brigade. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.
If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like The Gordon Hospital about 1.4 miles north-west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen. Commuter trade near Wandsworth Road station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands.

Little Portugal questions
Do you work overnight in Little Portugal?
Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. The site is handed back ready to open. When you phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email, mention when the site is quiet.
Which environmental health team covers Little Portugal?
Kitchens in Little Portugal are inspected by Lambeth council’s environmental health officers. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.
What information do you need?
A short description and a few pictures, with the address and opening hours. If we need more, we will ask.
What’s TR19?
It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked, and it takes a risk-based approach.
Do you have insurance?
Yes. We carry full insurance and have been trading since 2009.
Do you need to turn the fan off to clean it?
We always isolate the fan first, so it can’t run during the clean. That means the extract is off, so we clean while the kitchen is closed.
What’s the cleaning interval for an extract fan?
The fan follows the full system’s interval at BESA’s minimum intervals for your cooking hours. Readings may show it needs cleaning more often.
What makes a kitchen extract fan vibrate?
Grease on the blades and housing is one of the usual causes, because it unbalances the fan. It can also be wear in the bearings or motor, which our report will flag.
Multi-site and managed buildings
Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.
If you look after several sites, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Each site gets its own report and photos, so each one has its own record.
The process
We’re used to working while the site is closed. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. The visit itself takes an hour or two for most single fans. Before any visit in Little Portugal, we agree where the van can stop and how equipment reaches the system.
- First we check the fan’s condition and how it sounds.
- With the fan isolated, the housing is opened.
- Each blade is cleaned so the impeller runs evenly.
- Housing, outlet and the area around the motor are cleaned.
- We run the fan and note its condition in the photo report.
Before we arrive
- Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
- Move anything stored near the system

Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. That is our job.
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
When it’s something else
We will not sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so here are the limits:
- Electrical faults in the fan’s supply or controls (an electrician’s job)
- Grease in the duct and canopy before the fan (those need a full TR19 clean)
- A cracked or broken impeller (it needs replacing)
If you’re not sure, just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we will give you a straight answer before you book.
