Honest limits

Extract fan cleaning can’t fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not put right:

  • An undersized fan that can’t cope
  • A motor that has burnt out
  • A cracked or broken impeller (it needs replacing)

If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll say what we think.

Extract fan cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Earley

Duct Doctor has been cleaning kitchen extract fans since 2009. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers in-line fans, fan housings and axial fans, and common reasons people get in touch are a fan that hums, whines or rumbles and a fan that has never been cleaned.

Most kitchens in a town like Earley cannot close for a day, so the work is done after service, overnight or on a closed day. By the next service, the kitchen is ready to cook in again.

The sign-off is always in writing: a written report, dated and illustrated with photos, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

Between visits

Aftercare is simple, and it helps at the next visit:

  • Keep records of every fan clean
  • Watch for grease marks around the outlet
  • Check the report shows the fan was cleaned
  • Leave a clear route to the fan

Keep the report with the maintenance log and fire risk assessment. It gives a dated record of the fan’s condition, which helps if anything changes later.

Listen to the fan. Rattles, hums or shaking can be early signs of build-up or wear and early action can save a repair.

Earley questions

Can you work in Earley outside opening hours?

Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. Your customers, staff or residents in Earley needn’t be disturbed. Just phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with your opening times and we’ll plan around them.

Which fire service covers Earley?

Earley is in the area of Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

Why has my extract fan got louder?

Often it’s grease on the impeller. Grease collects unevenly and unbalances the impeller, causing vibration and noise. If cleaning does not, the bearings or motor may need attention.

Can you fix a fan that’s worn out?

A fan that needs repair is noted on the report, with what we found. We offer extract fan repair and replacement, and if it fails outright, our 24/7 emergency line is there.

What information do you need?

Some photos and a quick description of the system plus the address and your hours. If we need more, we will ask.

How long does extract fan cleaning take?

One easily reached fan is quick, while fans on high roofs or in tight voids take longer. It’s done while the kitchen is closed.

Is the fan included in a TR19 clean?

Yes. TR19® Grease covers the whole system, fan included. It’s isolated, opened and cleaned along with the canopy, plenum, filters, ducts and discharge.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes, every time. We diagnose before we treat: the survey shows what needs doing and what access we need, and the quote is based on that.

The process

We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the work takes an hour or two for most single fans. Before the visit, a few pictures of the system and how to reach it help us plan the work in Earley.

  1. We start by checking where the fan sits and how to isolate it.
  2. The fan is isolated so it cannot start while we work.
  3. We remove the grease from the blades, impeller and casing.
  4. The fan and its surrounds are degreased, keeping clear of the motor’s electrics.
  5. It’s closed up, run and checked, and pictures go into your report.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions

What the work involves, part by part

Kitchens with long cooking hours

A fan in a long-hours kitchen runs for most of the day, which means grease and wear add up quickly. Regular cleans help it keep going.

Fan housings and motors

Motors and their electrics are kept dry and treated with care, and the fan is isolated throughout. Grease around the motor can make it run hotter, so we clean what we safely can.

Earley kitchens: local notes

According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 16 bars, pubs and nightclubs within about 1.5 miles of central Earley. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. It’s Wokingham council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Earley. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service covers Earley. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

Church and community hall kitchens, near Trinity Church or anywhere around Earley, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. If you run a café or takeaway near Earley station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits. Healthcare kitchens cannot easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Earley is Royal Berkshire Hospital, about 1.7 miles north-west.

What affects the quote in Earley

There’s no set price list, because no two systems are the same. The quote depends on:

  • The number of sites or systems
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • The size of the system
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we survey first, from photos or on site, and the price is agreed before any work starts.

What to send for a quote

When you call or email, it’s useful to have:

  • The postcode and the type of business
  • Any previous report or certificate
  • A few general shots of the system
  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet

Getting a quote does not take long. Call or email with a few details and you will usually have a fixed price within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

What staff can safely do

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that’s where we come in.

Why act early in Earley

Vibration from an unbalanced impeller does not stay small. It can wear the bearings and lead to failure, which may leave the kitchen without extraction. Cleaning it early is far less disruptive. In a town like Earley, a problem caught early is a planned visit, not an emergency.

You won’t find a price list here, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a fixed quote, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email, and we’ll talk you through it.
