About our canopy cleaning in Vale of Health
Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Typical jobs include poor capture at the hood and condensation and grease dripping together, on grease gutters, canopy light fittings and plenum chambers.
London kitchens tend to trade late and open early, so work in Vale of Health is normally booked for the night or the early hours. Parking, loading and access to the roof are agreed with the building before the night of the clean.
A written report with photos follows every visit, so you have a record of what was done and when. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Honest limits
Not every problem is solved by canopy cleaning, and we’d rather say so up front. It won’t put right:
- Faulty canopy lights or wiring (a job for an electrician)
- Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair
- Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
If you are not sure, just call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking.
Parts of the system we cover
- Baffle filters
- Wall canopies
- Canopy light fittings
- Plenum chambers
- Island canopies
- Grease gutters
Keeping the system healthy
Simple habits between visits make a real difference. Our advice:
- Keep the fan on through service
- Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
- Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
- Check filters aren’t leaving gaps
Keep the photo report with your maintenance log where an inspector can see it. Before and after photos speak for themselves.
Run the extract for as long as anything is cooking. Turning the fan off early lets vapour settle on the hood.
What the work involves, part by part
Wall canopies
The back of a wall canopy is hard to reach and easy to miss. We remove the filters to reach it and scrape it clean.
Plenums and filter housings
Behind the grease filters is the plenum. Grease that slips past the filters settles there, and it’s cleaned every time we clean the canopy.
Vale of Health: your questions answered
Is parking a problem for work in Vale of Health?
A loading bay, a visitor permit or off-street space near the site in Vale of Health makes the visit easier to plan. If the building has a loading slot system, we’ll book into it.
Who is the fire and rescue service for Vale of Health?
London Fire Brigade is the fire and rescue service for Vale of Health. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.
How much notice should we give?
It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.
What do you do to protect the area?
By covering it before any work starts. We keep the work contained and leave the area clean.
Do you cover Vale of Health?
Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of South East England, and that includes Vale of Health.
What is TR19?
A BESA specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It isn’t legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.
What types of premises do you cover?
All kinds of commercial and public premises: kitchens, offices, schools, healthcare, retail, leisure and food production. We fit the work around how the site operates.
Is canopy cleaning enough for TR19?
A TR19® Grease clean covers the whole system, not just the canopy. A canopy clean helps between full cleans, but the ducts and fan still need doing, and the report will say what was covered.

Signs you need canopy cleaning in Vale of Health
A canopy with gaps around its filters lets grease straight through. More grease reaches the plenum and housing than they’re designed to take, which shows up as heavy deposits when the filters come out.
Common reasons sites call us are:
- Overflowing grease troughs and gutters
- A hood coated in old grease
- Drips from the canopy onto the range
- A filter housing caked in grease
A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Christ Church or elsewhere in Vale of Health, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

How we price canopy cleaning
We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:
- Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
- The times the site is available
- Site rules, permits and inductions
- How big the system is
The cost depends on the size of the system, the condition it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before we start, so you know where you stand.
What to send for a quote
When you call or email, it’s useful to have:
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
- The postcode and the type of business
- Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
- Your last certificate, test record or report
Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.
Grease, kitchens and Vale of Health
The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 372 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 107 takeaways within about 1.5 miles of central Vale of Health. Wherever there’s a canopy over the cooking, its hood and plenum collect grease with every service. Environmental health officers from Camden council inspect food businesses in Vale of Health. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. The fire and rescue service for Vale of Health is London Fire Brigade. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.
If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like New End Hospital about under half a mile south, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen. Bursars and site managers at schools such as Christ Church Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.
