When it’s something else

Canopy cleaning cannot fix everything, and we will tell you before any work starts. It does not solve:

  • Bent or broken filters
  • A light fitting that doesn’t work
  • A canopy undersized for the equipment

Not sure which it is? You can call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will tell you honestly before you book.

What we work on in Fortune Green

  • Wall canopies
  • Island canopies
  • Grease gutters
  • Baffle filters
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Plenum chambers

How we handle canopy cleaning in Fortune Green

A greasy canopy tells an inspector a lot before they’ve opened anything. Under the surface, the plenum behind the filters is usually in a worse state. Canopy cleaning deals with both, so the hood looks right and works properly. If you have a canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection and drips from the canopy onto the range, we can help, from baffle filters, island canopies and grease gutters onwards.

Across London, many commercial kitchens are squeezed into basements and narrow back-of-house spaces, with extract ducts that can climb several floors to discharge at roof level. In Fortune Green, as elsewhere in the capital, a long duct run means more access points to open and more grease to remove.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured. On top of that, we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

Fortune Green questions

Does London parking affect a job in Fortune Green?

A loading bay, a visitor permit or off-street space near the site in Fortune Green makes the visit easier to plan. Where restrictions apply in the day, an evening or overnight visit normally gets round them.

Do you clean school canteen extracts around Fortune Green out of term?

Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. With about 71 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Fortune Green, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Send us your term dates when you call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email, and we’ll fit the work in.

What happens to the filters during the clean?

We remove the filters to reach the plenum, and they’re cleaned before going back in. Any that are damaged are noted on the report.

How much does canopy cleaning cost?

There’s no set price, as it depends on the job: how big it is, what state it’s in, how we reach it and the working hours. You get a fixed price before work begins.

What about areas you cannot get to?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. You’ll know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.

Do you clean canopies in all kinds of kitchens?

Wall canopies, island canopies and single hoods over individual appliances. Each one is cleaned inside and out, with the plenum behind the filters.

Do we need to close while you work?

Typically not. Out-of-hours visits keep the disruption down. Larger jobs can be phased over several visits to keep things running.

What is TR19?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.

What happens if it’s left?

In Fortune Green, as elsewhere, a greasy canopy is one of the first things an inspector sees. Keeping it clean shows the rest of the kitchen is being looked after, and it’s far easier to keep clean than to rescue. Shared walls, risers and roofs mean a problem at one London site seldom stays put.

A single site or a whole portfolio, the quote is built the same way: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. You will have a fixed price before we start.

Keeping the system healthy

How long the results last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Run the extract the whole time you’re cooking
  • Wipe the canopy down at close every day
  • Refit filters the right way round and fully seated
  • Do not scrape the canopy with metal tools

File the report alongside your fire risk assessment, so it’s ready when an EHO, insurer or fire officer asks. Before and after pictures speak for themselves.

Tell us if the canopy starts dripping or the filters clog sooner than usual. It can mean the cooking has changed or the interval is too long, which a grease thickness test can confirm.

What we do, step by step

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. The work itself takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Expect the work in Fortune Green to happen after your last customer leaves, not during trading.

  1. Diagnosis first: we look behind the filters as well as at the hood.
  2. We protect everything below once it has cooled.
  3. Thick grease is scraped away before the canopy is degreased.
  4. We finish the plenum, troughs and canopy and check them over.
  5. The canopy is signed off with before and after pictures and a next clean date.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need

How to get a quote

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Advice

Grease, kitchens and Fortune Green

The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 54 pubs, bars and clubs and about 17 hotels and guest houses within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Fortune Green. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. In Fortune Green, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Barnet council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand. London jobs normally start after the last service, with loading and roof access agreed with the building first.

For kitchens close to West Hampstead Thameslink station, where the day often starts early and ends late, the extract can be cleaned overnight. Where a hall near Church of St Luke, or anywhere in Fortune Green, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.

Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too in Fortune Green and across Greater London. Work can be phased by floor, building or site to keep disruption down.

What your team can do, and what needs us

When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We’ll take a look and send you a fixed quote.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

What we are called out for in Fortune Green

Grease that runs down the inside of a canopy gathers in its gutters and troughs. Left to fill up, they spill over, and grease ends up dripping from the canopy edge.

The symptoms we’re asked about most are:

  • Grease filters blocking between washes
  • Greasy streaks across the canopy
  • Canopy gutters full of old fat
  • A greasy hood noticed by an inspector

A hospital like New End Hospital, about 0.7 miles east, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.
