Canopy cleaning in Teddington

The canopy is where the extract system breathes in. If it’s coated in grease, everything downstream gets more of it. Our diagnosis starts there, and the treatment is a thorough degrease of the hood, plenum and housing. If you have filters that never seem to stay clean and heavy deposits behind the grease filters, we can help.

London kitchens are often tucked into basements or the back of a building, with extract ducts that can climb several floors to discharge at roof level. In Teddington, as elsewhere in the capital, a long duct run means more access points to open and more grease to remove.

We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we are fully insured. On top of that, we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

How it works

Each visit runs to the same pattern: sheeting and protection first, make the system safe, do the work, clear away and leave you the report. The visit itself takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Managed blocks in London often need contractors booked in ahead, and we are happy to deal with the agent directly for a site in Teddington.

  1. We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
  2. Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
  3. With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
  4. Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
  5. We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids

Advice

For landlords and multi-site operators

When the building owner and the occupier are different, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party, and the report can go to both.

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Greater London. Work can be phased by floor, building or site around the people who use them.

Canopy cleaning around Teddington

Look up Teddington on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you will find about 145 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 21 takeaways in and around Teddington, up to about a mile and a half out. Wherever there’s a canopy over the cooking, its hood and plenum collect grease with every service. Environmental health officers from Richmond-Upon-Thames council inspect food businesses in Teddington. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Teddington is covered by London Fire Brigade. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.

Term dates shape school work: for a school like St Mary's and St Peter's Church of England Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Christ Church, or anywhere in Teddington, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

Between visits

Simple habits between visits make a real difference. Our advice:

  • Keep filters on a set cleaning routine
  • Check filters are not leaving gaps
  • Give the canopy a wipe after service
  • Report new drips or smells from the canopy

We recommend when the canopy, or the whole system, should next be cleaned. It reflects how long the kitchen cooks and how much grease we removed, in line with BESA guidance.

Wipe the canopy surfaces at the end of each day. It does not reach the plenum, but it stops the outside building up.

When to call us in Teddington

Because the plenum sits behind the filters, it’s easy to forget. Daily cleaning reaches the canopy face but rarely gets further, leaving the plenum and housing to collect grease between professional cleans.

Look out for these warning signs:

  • Greasy streaks across the canopy
  • Fat running down the front of the hood
  • A plenum thick with grease behind the filters
  • A greasy hood noticed by an inspector

If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Teddington Memorial Hospital about less than half a mile west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Proof of insurance
  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
  • Whether the quote shows VAT
  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach

Questions to ask before booking

FAQs for Teddington

Can parking be tricky for a job in Teddington?

Parking and loading in London need planning, so tell us about bays, permits and building rules when you book. Where restrictions apply in the day, an evening or overnight visit normally gets round them.

Which environmental health team covers Teddington?

The local authority for Teddington is Richmond-Upon-Thames council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

What happens to the waste?

We take it away at the end of the visit. During the work, it’s contained so the area stays clean.

What happens if you can’t reach some of it?

Anything we cannot reach goes on the report, with pictures where possible, and we tell you what would make it reachable, such as extra access panels in ductwork.

Which accreditations do you hold?

We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The Vent Hygiene Elite scheme is run by BESCA and audited independently.

What does canopy cleaning cost?

It depends on the site, so we quote each one individually. To get one, call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and tell us about the site and its opening hours.

Who is the responsible person?

The law calls them the responsible person. It’s normally the employer, or whoever controls the building, and where several people have control, each can have duties. Your lease and fire risk assessment should make it clear.

Do you cover Teddington?

Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of South East England, Teddington included.

Fixed quotes for canopy cleaning in Teddington

Every site gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:

  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • How easy every part is to reach
  • The condition we find in the survey

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we will go through it with you.

Helping us quote

When you contact us, it’s useful to have:

  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see

To help us quote: where the site is, what it is and its opening hours, photos of the system and the last certificate or report, if there is one. Once you have those, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.

When it’s something else

Before you book, it helps to know what’s not included:

  • Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
  • Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)
  • Electrical faults in the canopy

If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think before you book.

What the work covers

  • Wall canopies
  • Island canopies
  • Grease gutters
  • Baffle filters
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Plenum chambers

What staff can safely do

Staff cleaning does not replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.
