St Helen's canopy cleaning
Our technicians work in St Helen's on canopy cleaning. Out-of-hours visits, a fixed quote and a written report with photos on every job.

- A plenum thick with grease behind the filters
- Condensation running down the canopy
Canopy cleaning in St Helen's
Of the whole extract system, the canopy is the bit on show. It’s also the first place cooking vapour meets, so grease gathers on its inner skin, seams and gutters. We clean it inside and out, along with the plenum and filter housing behind it. If you have heavy deposits behind the grease filters and fat running down the front of the hood, we can help.
In a smaller place like St Helen's, the kitchens with extract systems are more likely to be a pub, a café, a takeaway or a school or care home kitchen than a big restaurant. A kitchen that cooks fewer hours still builds up grease, so cleaning is planned around how much it cooks and what the readings show.
The paperwork matters as much as the work. Each visit is written up with pictures, covering the work done, any areas we couldn’t access and a recommended next date. Keep it with your fire safety records so it’s ready for an insurer, fire officer or EHO.

How the visit works
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool first, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. The work itself takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. In a smaller place like St Helen's, parking is rarely the issue, but tell us about gates, roof access and opening hours.
- We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
- Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
- With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
- The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
- Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.
Getting ready for the visit
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time

How to get a quote
To get a fixed quote, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. We typically come back within one working day.

Questions from St Helen's
Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in St Helen's?
St Helen's is in the area of East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.
Will you come out to St Helen's?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. A survey first, from pictures or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.
What do you do with what you remove?
We take it away when we go. During the work, it’s contained to keep the area clean.
How long will it take to clean the canopy?
A single canopy with a light build-up is fairly quick, while long canopies, several hoods or heavy deposits take more time. You will know before we start.
How much notice should we give?
Earlier is better, particularly for night and weekend visits. We typically quote within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.
Can you set up regular visits?
Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, to suit the system and how it’s used.
How do you protect the area?
By covering it before any work starts. We keep the work contained and clean down when we finish.
What information do you need?
The site address, the type of premises and your opening hours, plus pictures of the system and your last certificate or report if you have one.
What the work involves, part by part
School and staff canteen kitchens
In a school or workplace canteen, the canopy is often the only part of the extract staff ever see. The canopy and plenum are both cleaned, so what’s out of sight is dealt with too.
Island canopies
The underside of an island canopy is in full view so a clean, even finish matters. We degrease it thoroughly and photograph the result.
What canopy cleaning looks like in St Helen's
At about 2 miles from the coast, St Helen's is close enough for sea air to matter. Metal on the roof weathers faster close to the coast, and the extract fan and cowl are no exception. Look up St Helen's on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you will find about 138 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 63 sandwich bars and takeaways within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of St Helen's. Each canopy in those kitchens catches grease on the inside of the hood and behind the filters. St Helen's is covered by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.
Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Conquest Hospital is the nearest hospital to St Helen's, about 0.9 miles north-west. If you cook for passing trade around Ore station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work
When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.
Keeping the system healthy
No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. A few tips:
- Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
- Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
- Never run the range with a filter out
- Clean the baffle filters often
We clear away the sheeting, waste grease and water before we leave. Every filter is refitted and checked, and the kitchen is ready to cook.
Clean filters are the canopy’s first defence. Keep them on a regular cleaning or exchange cycle, and never cook with one missing. Less grease gets into the plenum as a result.
What we’re called out for in St Helen's
A canopy in St Helen's picks up grease at much the same rate as one anywhere else with the same cooking: the hours and the type of cooking decide how fast. High-heat cooking coats it fastest.
If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- Wet, greasy drips from the hood
- Smoke hanging around the canopy during service
- Drips from the canopy onto the range
- Filters that never seem to stay clean
Where a hall near St Peter & St Paul, or anywhere in St Helen's, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.
What to look for in a quote
- What paperwork you get at the end
- Whether a survey comes first
- How areas they cannot reach will be recorded
- Whether the figure could change on the day
What a clean won’t put right
We will not sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so these are the things it will not cover:
- A fan that can’t pull enough air because it’s worn out
- A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)
- Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
If you are not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer.
