Canopy cleaning in St Clement's, done properly
Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. If you’re dealing with a canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection and filters that never seem to stay clean, we can help, from wall canopies, grease gutters and island canopies onwards.
Around a smaller place like St Clement's, kitchen extracts tend to belong to pubs, cafés, takeaways and school or care home kitchens. A kitchen that cooks fewer hours still builds up grease, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.
Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a written report, dated and illustrated with photos, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

Why it’s worth doing now in St Clement's
For a kitchen in St Clement's, a canopy that looks greasy can colour a whole inspection. A clean hood is a sign the kitchen is cared for, and it’s far easier to keep clean than to rescue. A site near St Clement's that has to close at short notice is hard to cover for.
Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you’re not sure what’s needed, call 0345 646 2711, or email photos for straight advice and a fixed quote.

What affects the quote in St Clement's
There’s no set price list, because sites vary so much. What we look at:
- How big the system is
- The condition of the system
- Site rules, permits and inductions
- Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before any work starts.
Asking for a quote
Photos let us diagnose from a distance. Try to include:
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
- Any previous report or certificate
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
- Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
Want a quote for canopy cleaning? Please ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with a few details about the site. We will talk you through the work and send you a fixed quote before you commit to anything.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Staff cleaning does not replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.
Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

St Clement's kitchens: local notes
Food Standards Agency data counts about 367 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 48 takeaways in St Clement's and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. It’s Oxford City council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in St Clement's. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after. Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service covers St Clement's. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.
If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around St Clement's (Holywell Manor is about 0.5 miles north-west), fitting access panels needs care. Healthcare kitchens cannot easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to St Clement's is Warneford Hospital, about 0.8 miles east.

When to call us in St Clement's
The canopy takes the hottest, wettest air in the kitchen. Grease from the vapour lands on the canopy’s inner surfaces, its joints and its filters, and the plenum behind them collects the rest.
The symptoms we’re asked about most include:
- Fat running down the front of the hood
- Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
- A sticky, discoloured canopy
- An EHO comment about the canopy
Bursars and site managers at schools such as East Oxford Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

- What records you will receive afterwards

Common questions in St Clement's
Can you come to St Clement's after we close?
Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. That way a site in St Clement's doesn’t have to lose a day’s trading. Let us know the hours you are closed and we will book within them.
Do you cover smaller places like St Clement's?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.
Do you provide pictures of the cleaned canopy?
Before and after pictures go into a report, listing what was cleaned. A full TR19 clean adds a certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.
Who is responsible for fire safety on the premises?
In the words of the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person. It’s normally the employer, or whoever controls the building, and in shared buildings more than one person can have duties. Your lease and fire risk assessment should make it clear.
What does TR19 mean?
A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It is not legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.
What happens to the waste?
Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, including grease, debris and dirty water. We don’t leave it behind.
How much notice should we give?
Book as early as you can for planned work, especially if the next clean or test is due soon. For emergencies, we take calls 24/7.
Are you insured?
Yes. Full insurance covers our work, and we’ve been trading since 2009.
Aftercare tips
Aftercare is simple, and it helps at the next visit:
- Leave the extract running until cooking stops
- Check filters are not leaving gaps
- Never run the range with a filter out
- Give the canopy a wipe after service
File the report alongside your fire risk assessment where an inspector can see it. Photos of a clean canopy and plenum make the record easy to follow.
Clean filters are the canopy’s first defence. Wash or exchange them regularly, and never cook with one missing. The plenum behind them stays cleaner.
What happens on the day
Protection comes first: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. It takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. Tell us when your site near St Clement's is quiet and the visit will be booked for then.
- The canopy is checked from pictures or on a visit.
- Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
- We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
- Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
- We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.
How to prepare
- Arrange a key holder or contact on site
- Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
- Clear the space around the work
How to get a quote
To get a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711 or email us and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. We normally come back within one working day.
