How kitchen extract cleaning works in OX1
Every time food is cooked, warm vapour carries fat up into the extract. It cools inside the duct and settles as a sticky film that thickens month by month. That film is fuel, and cleaning the whole system is how you keep it under control. Common call-outs are for a smoky, hot kitchen with weak extraction and stale cooking odours from the system, on vertical risers, horizontal duct runs and discharge points.
There’s very little for your team to do on the day. Someone lets us in at the agreed time and shows us where everything is, and we take it from there. Before we leave, the area is tidied and the paperwork follows.
- You send pictures or we visit, and the system is surveyed from canopy to discharge.
- Grease thickness is measured and the price is fixed before work starts.
- The kitchen is closed, the equipment cooled and everything nearby protected.
- Filters, canopy and plenum are cleaned, then the ducts, risers, fan and discharge.
- Readings are repeated, pictures taken, and your TR19 certificate and photo report issued.
What affects the price in OX1
We don’t list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. Call for a fixed quote, and we’ll talk you through it.

How to get a quote
Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Kitchen extract cleaning around OX1
From Oxford, St John Street area and St. Ebbes to its smaller places, OX1 has kitchens of every size. Each extract is cleaned to the same TR19® standard, canopy to discharge.
From central London kitchens to coastal hotels and country pubs, London and the South East have every kind of site. The same TR19® standard applies to all of them, in OX1 and beyond.
St John Street area: For schools such as The Eckersley School of English, kitchen extract cleaning is typically booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Pusey House Chapel or elsewhere in St John Street area, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.
Why deal with it now?
Leaving the clean until the next refit does not make the grease go away. Fat that was soft and easy to remove hardens with heat and time, and that takes more work to shift. Regular cleans keep each visit shorter.
What your quote should include
- Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- Whether they’re fully insured
- What happens if part of the system cannot be accessed
What the work involves, part by part
Ductwork and risers
Vertical risers carry the air up through the building, and grease often collects at the bottom of them. Access panels along the riser let us clean it in sections.
Schools, hospitals and care homes
School, hospital and care home kitchens often have fixed hours and long holidays, so cleans can be booked when the kitchen is closed. The certificate goes straight into the site’s maintenance records.
For landlords and multi-site operators
If you look after several sites, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so each one has its own record.
Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too in OX1 and across Oxfordshire. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.
What we’re called out for in OX1
A lot of duct grease gets there because the filters let it through. Filters that are bent, badly fitted, missing or left uncleaned let more fat into the plenum and duct, and it doesn’t stop until it reaches the fan.
Look out for these warning signs:
- A smoky, hot kitchen with weak extraction
- Cleaning needed before an insurance renewal or survey
- An inspection that picked up a dirty extract
- Grease smells coming from the extract
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.
Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
Common questions in OX1
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, to suit the system and how it’s used.
How far ahead should we book?
Earlier is better, especially for out-of-hours work. Quotes normally come back within one working day, and emergencies are covered by our 24/7 line.
What should I send you?
The site address, the type of premises and your opening hours, plus pictures of the system and your last certificate or report if you have one.
Do you look at the system first?
Yes. Photos often do the job, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.
What do you do with what you remove?
Anything we remove is contained as we work and taken away with us, including grease, debris and dirty water. We don’t leave it behind.
What happens if you can’t reach some of it?
We record them on the report, with a note of where it is, and we tell you what would make it reachable, for example new access panels.
What’s TR19?
A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark.
