Oxfordshire · Canopy and hood cleaning
Oxford canopy cleaning
Canopy cleaning in Oxford from ventilation hygiene specialists trading since 2009. Out-of-hours visits and 24/7 emergency callout.
- A hood coated in old grease
- Heavy deposits behind the grease filters
- A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
The process
A visit follows the same order every time: protect the area, isolate whatever needs isolating, carry out the canopy cleaning, clear away and hand over the paperwork. The visit itself takes a few hours for most canopies. Phased working suits larger sites in a place the size of Oxford, with each part handed back before the next starts.
- We start by checking the canopy, filters and plenum.
- Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
- Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
- Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
- Clean filters are refitted and before and after pictures go into your report.
Getting ready for the visit
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
- Mention any parking or loading restrictions
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
Getting a quote
We don’t publish a price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from pictures or a survey, and then give you a fixed quote. To get going, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.
Advice
Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Oxford
Grease troughs, seams and the inside edge of the canopy are the spots a daily wipe misses. Thick deposits are scraped off by hand, then the surfaces degreased to suit what’s there, using hot water or steam where it helps. If you have smoke hanging around the canopy during service and a sticky, discoloured canopy, we can put it right, from island canopies, grease gutters and wall canopies onwards.
Town-centre kitchens in a place like Oxford often sit below flats or offices, with risers that run up the back of the building to roof level. Vertical risers like that need access panels in the right places, and anything we cannot reach goes on the report.
For insurers and inspectors, the record counts. So every job comes with a written report and photos, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?
For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
Do you need canopy cleaning in Oxford?
Filters that are missing, damaged or badly seated leave gaps. More grease reaches the plenum and housing than they’re designed to take, which shows up as heavy deposits when the filters come out.
Look out for these warning signs:
- A sticky, discoloured canopy
- Condensation running down the canopy
- Filters that clog soon after cleaning
- Fat running down the front of the hood
Volunteers running a hall kitchen near St Clement's Church, or anywhere in Oxford, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.
What your quote should include
- Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
- Proof of insurance
- What records you will receive afterwards
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
Grease, kitchens and Oxford
Food Standards Agency data counts about 366 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 47 takeaways within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Oxford. Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. Oxford sits within the area of Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. Kitchens in Oxford get their food hygiene inspections from Oxford City council. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.
If your kitchen is in a listed or historic building, like the houses around Oxford (Holywell Manor is about 0.8 miles north-west), fitting access panels needs care. Term dates shape school work: for a school like East Oxford Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.

Oxford: your questions answered
Which council inspects kitchens in Oxford?
That’s Oxford City council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in Oxford. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.
Who is the fire and rescue service for Oxford?
Fire safety enforcement in Oxford is handled by Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.
Who is the responsible person?
That depends on who controls the premises. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, which can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, an FM or a managing agent.
Do you provide pictures of the cleaned canopy?
A photo report, with before and after pictures of the canopy and plenum. It also gives a recommended date for the next clean.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes, always. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey tells us what the system needs and how to reach it and the fixed quote is built on it.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Tell us what you have and how it’s used and we will propose a schedule with a fixed quote.
Is TR19 cleaning required by law?
Not in itself. TR19® is the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs check against, and many insurers ask for proof of cleaning to it. The legal duty sits in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which applies in England and Wales.
What causes grease to drip from the hood?
A canopy only holds so much grease. When the gutters fill, it overflows onto the range, often mixed with condensation. A thorough clean stops it.
What affects the cost of canopy cleaning
Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We look at:
- One-off work versus a regular cycle
- Working hours and out-of-hours timing
- The size of the system
- Site rules, permits and inductions
Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.
Asking for a quote
A few details help us quote accurately. When you get in touch, it helps to send:
- Any previous report or certificate
- The site address and the type of premises
- Any access panels or hatches you can see
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
For canopy cleaning in Oxford, call 0345 646 2711, or email photos. Let us know the site type and the opening hours, plus photos or the previous report if they’re to hand. A fixed quote usually follows within one working day.
Why act early in Oxford
In Oxford, as elsewhere, a greasy canopy is one of the first things an inspector sees. Keeping it clean shows the rest of the kitchen is being looked after, and it’s far easier to keep clean than to rescue. A gap in the records is hard to explain after an incident, so it pays to keep the work current.
What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why every job is surveyed first, and why the quote is fixed before work begins.

Different parts, different methods
Grease troughs and gutters
Where a trough drains into a grease cup, we empty and clean that as well, and we will show staff where it is.
Plenums and filter housings
A plenum that hasn’t been cleaned for a long time can hold a thick layer of grease. Heavy deposits are scraped out by hand before degreasing.
