Canopy cleaning for sites in Forest Gate

Canopy cleaning in Forest Gate, done properly

Dripping edges and a sticky hood are the first things a visitor notices. Under the surface, the plenum behind the filters is typically in a worse state. We clean both, so the canopy is clean where it shows and where it doesn’t. The work covers baffle filters, plenum chambers and grease gutters, and people most often call us about poor capture at the hood and a greasy hood noticed by an inspector.

In London, few kitchens can spare a day to close, so work in Forest Gate is normally booked for the night or the early hours. Parking, loading and access to the roof are agreed with the building before the night of the clean.

For insurers and inspectors, the record counts. That is why every job is written up in a report with pictures, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

Forest Gate: your questions answered

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Forest Gate?

London Fire Brigade is the fire and rescue service for Forest Gate. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.

Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in Forest Gate?

Kitchens in Forest Gate are inspected by Newham council’s environmental health officers. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No. TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19® is the recognised way to show grease is under control.

What causes grease to drip from the hood?

Grease that builds up inside the canopy has to go somewhere. Once the troughs and plenum are full, it runs down and drips, often mixed with condensation. A thorough clean stops it.

How much does canopy cleaning cost in Forest Gate?

There’s no set price, as it depends on the job: the size of the system, its condition, access and when we can work. You get a fixed price before any work starts.

Do we need to close the kitchen for a canopy clean?

Only while we are working, and we work out of hours, so most kitchens do not lose a service. We work evenings, nights and weekends.

How much of the canopy do you clean?

The whole canopy, inside and out. We also remove the filters and clean the plenum and housing behind them, since that’s where grease hides.

Who is the responsible person?

That depends on who controls the premises. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent.

How we price canopy cleaning

Sites vary more than people expect. What affects the quote:

  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • The condition we find in the survey
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we survey first, from pictures or on site, and the price is agreed before work begins.

What to send for a quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. With your enquiry, please include:

  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • A few general shots of the system

To get a fixed quote, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. You’ll typically have a quote within one working day.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too across Greater London. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements, and we’ll send a fixed quote.

When something else is needed

Canopy cleaning cannot fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It does not solve:

  • Poor airflow from a fan that needs repair
  • Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
  • A dirty extract fan further along the system

If you’re not sure, just call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Baffle filters
  • Island canopies
  • Plenum chambers
  • Wall canopies
  • Grease gutters
  • Canopy light fittings

How the visit works

Your trading hours come first. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that is an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the work takes a few hours for most canopies. If your building in Forest Gate has sign-in rules, permits or key holders, mention them when you book.

  1. The canopy is checked from photos or on a visit.
  2. Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
  3. We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
  4. The canopy shell, seams, troughs and gutters are degreased inside and out.
  5. Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.

Before we arrive

  • Clear loose items from the work area
  • Tell us where we can park and unload
  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive

Getting a quote

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Related advice

Looking after it afterwards

Aftercare is simple, and it helps at the next visit:

  • Wipe the canopy down at close every day
  • Flag any change in how the canopy behaves
  • Empty the grease troughs before they fill
  • Clean the baffle filters often

The report gives a recommended next clean date. It reflects how long the kitchen cooks and how much grease we removed, in line with BESA guidance.

Empty the grease troughs and cups before they fill. Overflowing troughs are the usual cause of drips onto the range, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.

What the work involves, part by part

Island canopies

With filters on more than one side, an island canopy has more plenum to clean. We work round the canopy, cleaning each filter bank and plenum.

Plenums and filter housings

Behind the grease filters is the plenum. It catches whatever gets past the filters, and it’s cleaned every time we clean the canopy.

Canopy cleaning in Forest Gate: the local picture

Food Standards Agency data counts about 433 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 291 takeaways and sandwich shops within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Forest Gate. Each canopy in those kitchens catches grease on the inside of the hood and behind the filters. London jobs normally start after the last service, with loading and roof access agreed with the building first. Food hygiene inspections in Forest Gate are the job of Newham council’s environmental health team. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

For schools such as Woodgrange Infant School, kitchen extract cleaning is typically booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed. A kitchen near Wanstead Park station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval.

When to call us in Forest Gate

A canopy in Forest Gate picks up grease at much the same rate as one anywhere else with the same cooking: the hours and the type of cooking decide how fast. High-heat cooking coats it fastest.

It’s time to book a visit if you see:

  • Wet, greasy drips from the hood
  • Greasy streaks across the canopy
  • A greasy hood noticed by an inspector
  • Fat running down the front of the hood

Where a hall near A Radical Church, or anywhere in Forest Gate, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.
