How we handle TR19 inspection in Yarmouth

Not every kitchen fits neatly into a calendar. In a busy kitchen, grease can build faster than the minimum intervals allow for, and only measurement shows it. We give your risk assessment measured figures rather than guesses. We’re often asked to deal with surveys needed before quoting a full clean and sites with gaps in their extract records, on pre-clean surveys, deposit thickness tests and insurer audits.

Work in a small place like Yarmouth starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.

Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. That’s why every job is written up in a report with pictures, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Grease, kitchens and Yarmouth

At about 1 mile from the coast, Yarmouth is close enough for sea air to matter. Salt air speeds up corrosion of roof-level fans, discharge cowls and their fixings. Food Standards Agency records list about 7 restaurants, cafés and works canteens within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Yarmouth. For any of them with a canopy, measuring grease is better than guessing when to clean. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service covers Yarmouth. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.

Church and community hall kitchens, near St. James' Church or anywhere around Yarmouth, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. Mottistone Manor, about 4.8 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses near Yarmouth; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Lymington New Forest Hospital is the nearest hospital to Yarmouth, about 4.9 miles north-west.

Yarmouth is about 4 miles south-east of Lymington, in the Isle of Wight. Anywhere in PO41, we can carry out TR19 inspection at your premises. Our the Isle of Wight coverage runs to 125 places, Yarmouth among them. You can also see our page for Southampton, roughly 15 miles from Yarmouth.

Our technicians cover all of PO41 for TR19 inspection and the streets around it. Streets in the area include High Street, Station Road and Alma Place, all of which we cover for TR19 inspection. Main roads around Yarmouth include the A3054, which makes travel easy for evening and night visits. Nearby, we also carry out TR19 inspection in Bouldnor (1 mile east), Cranmore (2 miles east), Hamstead (3 miles east), Shalfleet (3 miles east) and East End (5 miles north). Further out, we also cover Newport (9 miles east), Ryde (15 miles east), Cowes (9 miles north-east), Sandown (15 miles east), Shanklin (15 miles east) and Ventnor (15 miles south-east). Island and remote sites take a little more planning, so please mention your location when you phone us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.

Yarmouth: your questions answered

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Yarmouth?

That’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Who carries out food hygiene inspections in Yarmouth?

Food hygiene inspections in Yarmouth are carried out by Isle of Wight council. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.

How much time does an inspection need?

Testing takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems. Sites with several canopies take longer, so call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will plan it.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, so we can schedule a run of sites on one programme. Each site gets its own report and pictures.

Can you set up regular visits?

Yes. Scheduled maintenance plans are part of what we do, with visits at the interval your system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.

What happens if you cannot reach some of it?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. You’ll know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.

Can you quote from pictures?

Usually, yes. Send a few wide pictures plus close-ups of panels, filters or grilles, and a fixed quote typically follows within one working day. If pictures are not enough, we’ll survey first.

Can you inspect our extract for our insurance company?

Yes. Our TR19 audits cover readings, photos, access and a recommended cleaning interval. You can pass it straight to your insurer or broker.

What happens on the day

The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with photos. Most of the time goes on the work itself, and that takes around an hour or two per canopy and duct system. If you can send pictures, we can arrive in Yarmouth knowing what to expect.

  1. The visit is arranged for when the kitchen is not busy.
  2. The system is checked from canopy to discharge.
  3. Grease thickness is measured at set points by WFTT or DTT.
  4. We photograph the test points and record any sections we cannot reach.
  5. We send a report setting out the readings, photos and next steps.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
  • Clear loose items from the work area

Ask for a quote

There’s no standard price list, because every site is different. We look at your system first, from pictures or on a visit, and then send you a fixed quote. To get going, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.

Advice

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit produces a dated report with pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.

What the work involves, part by part

Schools, hospitals and care homes

We fit testing around service times and school holidays so meals aren’t affected.

Horizontal duct runs

Bends and long runs can hold heavy deposits, out of sight of the kitchen.

What affects the cost of TR19 inspection

There’s no set price list, because sites vary so much. What we look at:

  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • A single visit or a regular plan
  • Parking and loading at the site
  • The number of sites or systems

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we survey first, from pictures or on site, and the price is agreed before work begins.

What to send for a quote

You don’t need the technical terms. It helps if you can send:

  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.

Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Looking after it afterwards

Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Have the latest report ready for insurance renewals
  • Clean grease off the canopy between professional cleans
  • Keep the route to access panels clear
  • Tell us if menus or opening hours change

You get a report with the grease readings, where they were taken and pictures of each point. File it alongside your TR19 certificates.

Clean, correctly fitted filters stop more grease reaching the duct. Gaps around filters let grease get past them.

What TR19 inspection cannot fix

We will not sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so here are the limits:

  • The grease itself, which needs a full or spot clean
  • A faulty or failing extract fan
  • The responsible person’s own fire risk assessment

If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will say what we think.
