TR19 inspection across Sandown

TR19 inspection in Sandown

If you’ve taken over a kitchen in Sandown and do not know when the extract was last cleaned, an inspection is the place to start. We survey the system, measure the grease and tell you what needs doing, before any cleaning is booked. We are often asked to deal with an insurer’s request for a TR19 audit and checking the result of a recent clean, on access surveys, insurer audits and post-clean checks.

In a smaller place like Sandown, the kitchens with extract systems are more likely to be a pub, a café, a takeaway or a school or care home kitchen than a big restaurant. A kitchen that cooks fewer hours still builds up grease, so cleaning is planned around how much it cooks and what the readings show.

We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we are fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

How it works

A visit follows the same order every time: protect the area, make the system safe, carry out the TR19 inspection, tidy up and leave you the report. On site, the work takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems. Around Sandown, access is usually simpler than in a town centre, though gates and roof access are worth mentioning.

  1. We go through any past certificates and reports.
  2. The layout is traced from the canopy to the discharge.
  3. We note where access panels are and where more are needed.
  4. We measure the grease and photograph each point.
  5. We report back with readings and a fixed quote.

Preparing for the visit

Keeping the system healthy

To keep the system working properly between visits:

  • Keep canopy edges and gutters wiped down
  • Flag changes in how much frying the kitchen does
  • Look out for grease drips round the canopy edge
  • Clean or swap grease filters as often as the kitchen needs

Readings of 500 microns or more are highlighted as needing immediate spot cleaning, and we can quote to do it.

Clean, correctly fitted filters stop more grease reaching the duct. Missing or damaged filters let grease straight into the plenum.

Sandown: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like Sandown?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Sandown included. The journey is planned ahead, so a few details about the route help.

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Sandown?

That is Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

All kinds of commercial and public premises: kitchens, offices, schools, healthcare, retail, leisure and food production. We fit the work around how the site operates.

Do you carry out TR19 audits for insurers?

Yes. Our TR19 audits cover readings, photos, access and a recommended cleaning interval. It’s set out for your insurer or broker.

How much time does an inspection need?

Expect it to take an hour or two for a single kitchen, longer for a large or complex system. The visit is timed so cooking is not disrupted.

What if parts of the system cannot be reached?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. Every job is surveyed first, either from pictures and details you send or on a site visit. Then you get a fixed quote.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. We work across South East England and London, so we can schedule a run of sites on one programme. Every site has its own report.

What TR19 inspection looks like in Sandown

The coast is only about 1 mile from Sandown. Salt air speeds up corrosion of roof-level fans, discharge cowls and their fixings. Food Standards Agency records include about 18 pubs and bars and about 30 hotels and B&Bs across Sandown and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. In Sandown, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Isle of Wight council. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Before-and-after pictures from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.

Term dates shape school work: for a school like The Bay Church of England School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break. Church and community hall kitchens, near Christ Church or anywhere around Sandown, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

Signs you need TR19 inspection in Sandown

Menus, opening hours and cooking styles change over time, and more frying or longer hours mean more grease. The old cleaning schedule may not match the kitchen any more.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Post-clean verification after another contractor’s clean
  • Kitchen extract systems with no recent grease readings
  • Insurance renewals needing proof of TR19 cleaning
  • Extracts that may be over the 200 micron mean

A hospital like Arthur Webster Memorial Hospital for Children, about 1.6 miles south-west, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.

Our hiring checklist

What affects the cost of TR19 inspection

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:

  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • The size of the system

Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

What we need to know

What to send for a quote:

  • Any previous report or certificate
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels

To get a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few pictures and your last certificate or report help a lot. We normally come back within one working day.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Sandown

From a single site to a large estate, the standard is the same: a survey first, a fixed quote, the work timed around the site and a report with photos.

When the building owner and the occupier are different, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We can quote either party, and the report can go to both.

How the job changes from site to site

Extract fan and discharge

A greasy fan works harder and wears faster. Readings show if it needs attention before the next clean.

Horizontal duct runs

If a run has no access panel, we note it so it can be fixed before the clean.

When it’s something else

To be straight with you, there are a few things this work won’t fix:

  • The legal duty, which stays with the responsible person
  • The grease itself, which needs a full or spot clean
  • Hidden runs that need access panels first

If you’re not sure, just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer.
