Looking after it afterwards

After the visit, a few habits help the work last:

  • Keep to the recommended interval
  • Look out for grease drips round the canopy edge
  • Clean or swap grease filters as often as the kitchen needs
  • Don’t box in or cover duct access panels

If any reading is 500 microns or more, the report flags it for immediate spot cleaning, and we can quote to do it.

Close the access gaps found during inspection, so every part of the duct can be cleaned.

After a clean, post-clean verification checks the result, with new readings and pictures of the cleaned areas. It shows whether the system was left in the condition the paperwork describes. If you have an insurer’s request for a TR19 audit and surveys needed before quoting a full clean, we can help.

For a smaller kitchen near Westwood, a TR19® clean is the same job as anywhere: canopy, filters, plenum, duct, fan and discharge. We plan the visit around your hours, with the journey sorted in advance.

Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. So every job comes with a written report and photos, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

What your team can do, and what needs us

When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We will take a look and send you a fixed quote.

Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.

TR19 inspection in Westwood: the local picture

The coast is only about 2 miles from Westwood. Metal on the roof weathers faster close to the coast, and the extract fan and cowl are no exception. According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 9 pubs, bars and clubs across Westwood and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. It’s Thanet council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Westwood. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.

For schools such as St Gregory's Catholic Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is normally booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed. Church and community hall kitchens, near Parish Church of St John the Baptist or anywhere around Westwood, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital is the nearest hospital to Westwood, about 0.7 miles north.

Westwood is about 1 mile south of Margate, in Kent. We provide TR19 inspection for commercial premises of every kind in Westwood and the rest of Kent. We cover 922 places across Kent, from busy centres to quieter spots. For sites nearby, see our Maidstone page (38 miles or so).

How the job changes from site to site

Extract fan and discharge

Grease builds up on the fan blades and inside the housing. We check and test them as part of the inspection.

Vertical risers

In buildings with several floors, the riser may pass through other tenants’ space, so we arrange access ahead of time.

What a clean won’t put right

In fairness, some problems need a different fix:

  • The responsible person’s own fire risk assessment
  • Installation problems, which fall under design guidance such as DW172
  • The grease itself, which needs a full or spot clean

Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll tell you honestly.

Where we work

  • Post-clean checks
  • Insurer audits
  • Wet film thickness tests
  • Access surveys
  • Pre-clean surveys
  • Deposit thickness tests

Why deal with it now?

Post-clean verification shows whether the system was left the way the certificate says, before the next clean is due. It’s easy to lose track of when the work was last done on a quieter site.

We do not list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we’ll explain what it covers.

Why book with us

  • Fixed quotes from a survey or photos
  • Fully insured
  • BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease
  • Survey first, then a fixed quote

See our cost guide and how to check a contractor.

How the visit works

Protection comes first: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. It takes around an hour or two per canopy and duct system, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. In a place like Westwood, we fit the visit around your hours.

  1. The visit is arranged for when the kitchen isn’t busy.
  2. We look over the canopy, plenum, ducts, fan and discharge.
  3. Grease thickness is measured at set points by WFTT or DTT.
  4. Each test point and any access problems are photographed.
  5. We send a report setting out the readings, photos and next steps.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time

How to get a quote

Quotes are quick. Send a few details and pictures, and we usually reply with a fixed quote within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

Advice

How we price TR19 inspection

You’ll get a fixed price before work begins. It’s based on:

  • The size of the system
  • The condition we find in the survey
  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • How many systems or sites are involved

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before any work starts.

What we need to know

We can often survey from photos. Try to include:

  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels

If you need TR19 inspection in Westwood, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form. Tell us what kind of premises it is and when it’s open, and send photos or your last report if you can. We normally send a fixed quote within one working day.

Westwood questions

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Westwood?

That is Kent Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

Does being near the coast affect TR19 inspection in Westwood?

It can. Being within about 2 miles of the sea means more corrosion on metalwork in Westwood than inland. Outdoor metalwork near the sea is worth inspecting at every visit.

Do you cover Westwood?

Yes. Our area takes in London and the counties of South East England, and that includes Westwood.

How much does TR19 inspection cost?

The cost depends on the size of the system, its condition, access and timing. Ask us for a fixed quote and we’ll usually reply within one working day.

What happens on a pre-clean survey?

We look at the system from canopy to discharge, take grease readings and check access. It lets us plan the clean and give you a fixed quote.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No, TR19® is not legislation. The Fire Safety Order 2005 still requires the responsible person to manage fire risk, which in a kitchen includes grease in the extract. Many insurance policies also require TR19 adherence.

At what point does grease need cleaning?

TR19® Grease says the mean shouldn’t exceed 200 microns between cleans, and anywhere at 500 microns or more needs spot cleaning right away.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we will suggest a schedule and quote for it.
