TR19 inspection for sites in St Helier

TR19 inspection in St Helier, done properly

A grease test measures how thick the grease is inside a kitchen extract system. Readings are taken at set points using the Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) or the Deposit Thickness Test (DTT). From the numbers, you can see whether cleaning is due. Common call-outs are for cleaning intervals that may not suit the kitchen and missing access panels found on survey, on post-clean checks, pre-clean surveys and wet film thickness tests.

London kitchens tend to trade late and open early, so work in St Helier is normally booked for the night or the early hours. Parking, loading and access to the roof are agreed with the building before the night of the clean.

We’ve been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we’re fully insured.

The process

When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the pictures you sent. If anything is different, we talk it through with the person on site before carrying on. From there, it takes around an hour or two per canopy and duct system. Night and weekend working is normal for us in London, and a site in St Helier is no exception.

  1. We agree a time when the kitchen is closed or quiet.
  2. The system is checked from canopy to discharge.
  3. Grease readings are taken at set points using WFTT or DTT.
  4. Each test point and any access problems are photographed.
  5. We send a report setting out the readings, pictures and next steps.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
  • Clear the space around the work

Getting a quote

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start.

St Helier: your questions answered

Can a school canteen extract in St Helier be done out of term time?

Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. The FSA’s register shows about 36 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of St Helier. Tell us your holiday dates and we’ll book the visit for when the site is empty.

Which council inspects kitchens in St Helier?

In St Helier, it’s Sutton council that carries out food hygiene inspections. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

What is TR19?

A BESA specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It isn’t legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.

What about areas you cannot get to?

Anything we can’t reach goes on the report, with photos where possible, and we explain what access is needed, such as extra access panels in ductwork.

What does TR19 inspection cost?

It depends on the site, so we quote each one individually. To get one, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos with the site type, opening hours and a few pictures.

What accreditations do you have?

BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We have been trading since 2009 and we are fully insured.

What do you do with what you remove?

It’s contained and taken away. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go, so it does not spread.

Do you work with multi-site operators?

Yes. We work across South East England and London, so sites at different addresses can be planned together on one programme. Every site has its own report.

TR19 inspection in St Helier: the local picture

Food Standards Agency records include about 18 pubs and bars in St Helier and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. London jobs typically start after the last service, with loading and roof access agreed with the building first. Food hygiene inspections in St Helier are the job of Sutton council’s environmental health team. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.

Commuter trade near Sutton Common station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands. Where a hall near St Peter's Church, or anywhere in St Helier, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

Common problems we fix in St Helier

Some parts of a system are hard to reach, so those sections can be skipped time and again. A survey finds the sections that can’t be reached, so panels can be fitted.

These are the problems we see most often:

  • Confirming a clean reached the whole system
  • Kitchens taken over with no cleaning records
  • Extracts that may be over the 200 micron mean
  • Cleaning intervals that may not suit the kitchen

For schools such as Tweeddale Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is normally booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.

What to look for in a quote

  • Whether the quote is based on a survey or photos
  • When the next visit should be, and why
  • Whether the figure could change on the day
  • Proof of accreditation you can verify

Choosing a duct cleaning contractor

What your team can do, and what needs us

Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We will take a look and send you a fixed quote.

What a clean will not put right

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • The grease itself, which needs a full or spot clean
  • Mechanical faults in the extract
  • Design faults in the extract system

If you’re not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you a straight answer.

What happens if it’s left?

Catching heavy deposits early keeps the fix small. Left alone, grease keeps building between cleans. In St Helier, as across London, ductwork often passes through shared risers and other people’s space.

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before we start.

Why St Helier businesses choose us

  • A fixed price before any work starts
  • In business since 2009
  • CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, with ISO 9001
  • One contact for all your sites in London and the South East

Different parts, different methods

Canopy and plenum

We look over the canopy, inside and out, and note where grease has gathered.

Extract fan and discharge

Grease on the fan adds to wear. The inspection shows whether it needs cleaning now.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too across Greater London. Work can be phased by floor, building or site to keep disruption down.

If you look after several sites, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Each site gets its own report and pictures, so records stay tidy.
