About our TR19 inspection in Leeds
A grease test measures how thick the grease is inside a kitchen extract system. Readings are taken at set points using the Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) or the Deposit Thickness Test (DTT). The results show whether the system needs cleaning and how soon. If you have systems that need surveying before cleaning and heavy grease suspected in the plenum or ducts, we can help, from access surveys, wet film thickness tests and post-clean checks onwards.
In a village or hamlet like Leeds, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are typically a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.
Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. That is why every job is written up in a report with pictures, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Leeds: your questions answered
Who inspects food businesses in Leeds?
Kitchens in Leeds are inspected by Maidstone council’s environmental health officers. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.
Which fire authority looks after Leeds?
Kent Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Leeds. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes. For anything urgent, such as a fan failure or damage after a fire, ring the 24/7 line and we will talk you through the next steps.
Can you quote from photos?
Normally, yes. Send wide shots, close-ups of any access panels and anything that worries you, and we usually come back within one working day. If photos are not enough, we’ll survey first.
What is a WFTT or DTT grease test?
Grease thickness testing measures the layer of grease on the duct surfaces, by WFTT or DTT. The results are given in microns.
Why survey before a clean?
We check the layout, the grease levels and the access, before anyone starts cleaning. Any access problems are flagged so they can be sorted first.
At what point does grease need cleaning?
TR19® Grease says the mean shouldn’t exceed 200 microns between cleans, with 500 microns or more anywhere needing immediate spot cleaning.
Can you set up regular visits?
Yes. Scheduled maintenance plans are part of what we do, with visits at the interval your system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.

When to call us in Leeds
Grease is fuel. Flames from the range can be pulled into the canopy and travel through the ducts to other parts of the building. Knowing how much there is lets you act before it becomes a hazard.
The symptoms we are asked about most include:
- Kitchen extract systems with no recent grease readings
- Pre-clean surveys before a first TR19 clean
- Parts of the system left out of past cleans
- Post-clean verification after another contractor’s clean
Term dates shape school work: for a school like Leeds and Broomfield Church of England Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.
Questions to ask before booking
- What paperwork you get at the end
- Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
- Whether the quote shows VAT
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
Honest limits
A few issues sit outside what this work can do:
- Removing the grease, which is a separate clean
- A faulty or failing extract fan
- Installation problems, which fall under design guidance such as DW172
If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll say what we think before booking.

What we do, step by step
Night work is normal for us. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so the site can open as normal afterwards. The visit itself takes anything from an hour for a small canopy and short duct to a good part of a day for a large site. Visits to a village like Leeds are booked in advance, at a time that suits whoever runs the site.
- Post-clean verification is booked once the clean is done.
- We open the access points used on the clean.
- Grease readings are taken again at set points.
- We photograph each area to record how it was left.
- We report the findings and flag any areas that need more work.
Getting ready for the visit
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
- Agree a time when the area can be out of use
- Let us know about parking and loading
Get a fixed quote
The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

What your team can do, and what needs us
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.
Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.
What happens if it’s left?
After an incident, an insurer can ask to see proof of TR19 cleaning and inspection. Missing records can put a claim at risk. An up-to-date inspection report is a good place to start. Equipment tucked in a roof space or outbuilding near Leeds rarely gets looked at unless someone books it.
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That’s why we survey first, from pictures or on site, and the price is agreed before we start.

Different parts, different methods
Extract fan and discharge
The discharge at the end of the system is checked as well, since grease reaches the very end of the system.
Restaurants, pubs and hotels
Inspections are done when the kitchen is closed or quiet so trading is not affected.
Leeds kitchens: local notes
Food Standards Agency records list about 6 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens in Leeds and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. Food hygiene inspections in Leeds are the job of Maidstone council’s environmental health team. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. How we price TR19 inspection
The quote reflects the site in front of us. We take into account:
- How big the system is
- What state the system is in
- Any permits to work or inductions
- How easy every part is to reach
Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.
Asking for a quote
What to send for a quote:
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
- Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
- The postcode and the type of business
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
