- A filter housing caked in grease
- Grease channels that no longer drain
- Grease dripping from the canopy edge
About our canopy cleaning in Leeds
Think of the canopy as the mouth of the extract. A dirty canopy passes more grease further into the system. We start the check-up there, and the cure is a thorough clean of the hood, the plenum and the filter housing. If you have a canopy that no longer draws the smoke away and a greasy hood noticed by an inspector, we can put it right.
In a small place like Leeds, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, where grease settles in the flat sections. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.
We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we are fully insured. On top of that, we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

What happens if it’s left?
Leaving the canopy until the next full clean can mean months of build-up. Some kitchens need the canopy cleaning more often than the whole system, and readings or a look behind the filters will show it. Systems in rural buildings are often out of sight and out of mind.
Every site is different, so we price each one individually. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all play a part.

What staff can safely do
Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.
Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.
Keeping the system healthy
Here’s the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Check filters aren’t leaving gaps
- Flag any change in how the canopy behaves
- Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
- Clean the baffle filters often
Where the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Where only the canopy is done, the report says so clearly.
Clean filters are the canopy’s first defence. Wash or exchange them regularly, and never cook with one missing. The plenum behind them stays cleaner.
Common questions in Leeds
Who inspects food businesses in Leeds?
The local authority for Leeds is Maidstone council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.
Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Leeds?
Fire safety enforcement in Leeds is handled by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.
What happens to the waste?
We take it away when we go. While we work, it’s kept contained to keep the area clean.
Are the filters cleaned too?
The filters are removed, cleaned and put back. Each filter is checked for fit as it goes back, because gaps let grease through.
Do you work in Leeds?
Yes. We work across Greater London, Surrey, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, Leeds included.
What paperwork do I get after a canopy clean?
You get a photo report with before and after pictures. Full system cleans also come with a TR19 certificate.
How long is a canopy clean?
It takes a few hours, depending on the size of the canopy and how much grease has built up. We will confirm how long when we quote.
Do we need to close while you work?
Not typically. The area we are working in has to be out of use while we are there, so we book a time when it would be closed anyway.
What we do, step by step
We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. Once we are in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the work takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Leeds, let us know and we’ll plan around it.
- First the canopy is surveyed, by photos or in person.
- The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
- Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
- The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
- Clean filters are refitted and before and after pictures go into your report.
Getting ready for the visit
- Arrange a key holder or contact on site
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive

Canopy cleaning in Leeds: the local picture
Food Standards Agency records list about 6 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens across Leeds and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Each canopy in those kitchens catches grease on the inside of the hood and behind the filters. Kitchens in Leeds get their food hygiene inspections from Maidstone council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Kent Fire and Rescue Service covers Leeds. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

What we’re called out for in Leeds
Filters that are missing, damaged or badly seated leave gaps. The plenum and housing behind them then take far more grease than they should, which shows up as heavy deposits when the filters come out.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- Grease dripping from the canopy edge
- A hood coated in old grease
- Condensation running down the canopy
- Grease channels that no longer drain
Term dates shape school work: for a school like Leeds and Broomfield Church of England Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.
What your quote should include
- How they set the interval to the next visit
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- Whether VAT is included
- Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
What affects the cost of canopy cleaning
We do not publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. What we look at:
- When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
- A single visit or a regular plan
- Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
Putting the work off seldom saves money. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are not sure what’s needed, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos for straight advice and a fixed quote.
What we need to know
You do not need the technical terms. It helps if you can send:
- Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
- Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
- Problems your staff have spotted
The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.
