Fire and smoke damper testing in Leeds
Our technicians work in Leeds on fire damper drop testing and smoke damper testing, with a record for each damper. Out-of-hours visits, a fixed quote and a written report with pictures on every job.
- Missing or out-of-date damper records
- Smoke dampers that need testing through their controls
- Blades that jam part-way when released
What staff can safely do
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.
Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in Leeds
Testing finds the dampers that won’t close. When one sticks, has a damaged link or is corroded, we report it and offer remedials rather than leaving you with a problem and no fix. If you are dealing with blades that jam part-way when released and smoke dampers with no recent test, we can put it right.
Rural buildings that have been converted or extended can have ducts passing through fire-resisting walls, and the dampers in them are easily forgotten. The first visit starts by locating each damper.
The report is your system’s health record: dated, with pictures, and showing what was done. Grease extract cleans are also certificated to TR19® Grease through the BESCA VHE portal, ready for your insurer.

For landlords and multi-site operators
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We work across London and the South East, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.
How the job changes from site to site
Offices and retail
In offices and retail units, dampers tend to be hidden above working areas. We can test in the evening, overnight or at weekends so the space stays open.
Access panels
Access panels sometimes get painted over, screwed shut or hidden by new ceilings. Clear access makes the test quicker and less disruptive.
Questions from Leeds
Can a school’s dampers in Leeds be tested out of term time?
Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. There are about 2 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Leeds. Tell us your holiday dates and we’ll book the visit for when the site is empty.
Which fire service covers Leeds?
Fire safety enforcement in Leeds is handled by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Failed dampers on a report should be followed by a record of the repair, so the file shows the problem was closed out.
Who is the responsible person?
The law calls them the responsible person. That is generally the employer or the person in control of the premises, and in shared buildings more than one person can have duties. If you’re not sure, check your lease and fire risk assessment.
How do you keep the site clean during the work?
By covering it before any work starts. The work is kept contained and leave the area clean.
Will we have to shut during the visit?
Not normally. Visits are timed for when the area is closed, such as overnight or at a weekend, so the site can carry on as normal.
Do you certify fire dampers?
Our paperwork is a test report, not a certificate of compliance. For each damper it shows the result and anything that needs putting right.
Where does the waste go?
It’s contained and taken away. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on, so it doesn’t spread.
Is TR19 cleaning required by law?
Not in itself. TR19® is the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs check against, and many insurance policies ask for proof of TR19® cleaning. The legal duty sits in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 in England and Wales.
When to call us in Leeds
Fusible links and springs do not last for ever. Damaged or painted links and weak springs mean the blade may stop short, and that only becomes clear during a drop test.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- Gaps in the fire damper test log
- Dampers affected by leaks or condensation
- Fire damper items raised by an assessor
- Dampers that cannot be reached without an access panel
If you manage a school site such as Leeds and Broomfield Church of England Primary School, any fire dampers can be tested in the holidays.
What your quote should include
- Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
- Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
- When they can work, and whether that’s outside your opening hours
- Whether the quote shows VAT
Fire damper testing in Leeds: local notes
About 3.4 miles north-west of Leeds is KIMS hospital, the nearest hospital. Healthcare buildings rely on fire compartments to protect people who cannot easily move, and dampers keep those compartments sealed. About 35 miles out from central London, Leeds is part of the South East area we work across. Evening, overnight and weekend visits are all possible.
The nearest hospital, KIMS hospital, is about 3.4 miles north-west; healthcare buildings like it are a reminder that dampers protect people who cannot move quickly. If you manage a historic building in the area (Leeds Castle is about 1 mile east), dampers fitted during conversions can be hard to reach and need recording.

What we do, step by step
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. On site, it takes from an hour or two in a small building to several visits on a large estate. The timing of a visit to Leeds is set by you, and the travel is our side of the planning.
- We plan access and timing with you first, including any out-of-hours work.
- Ceiling tiles and hatches are opened and each damper’s access panel removed.
- We release each blade and check it shuts all the way.
- We reset it and record any dirt, corrosion or damage.
- We close everything up and send the results in a report.
How to prepare
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
Ask for a quote
To get a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711, or email photos and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. You’ll normally have a quote within one working day.

Aftercare tips
A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:
- Tell contractors where dampers are before they start work
- Don’t let hatches get painted shut or boarded over
- Keep to at least yearly testing
- Keep an eye out for damp around dampers
Make sure trades working in ceilings and risers know where the dampers sit, and ask them not to run cables through or wedge them. Anything they disturb should be checked again.
Keep a damper register: location, type, last test date and result. It stops dampers getting lost as the building changes.
Honest limits
Some problems need a different service or another trade:
- Signing off a building’s overall fire safety
- Fire risk assessments, which need a fire risk assessor
- Holes around ductwork in fire-resisting walls
If you’re not sure, just phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer.
