TR19 inspection in Ickham
A grease test measures how thick the grease is inside a kitchen extract system. We use the Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) or the Deposit Thickness Test (DTT), taking readings at set points. The results show whether the system needs cleaning and how soon. If you are dealing with extracts that have never been grease tested and sites with gaps in their extract records, we can help, from post-clean checks, insurer audits and wet film thickness tests onwards.
For a kitchen in or near Ickham, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.
Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Ickham
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we’re happy to quote for all of it.

When to call us in Ickham
As hot, greasy air travels up the duct, it cools and leaves a film behind. The thickest layers can sit out of sight in the plenum, at bends and along flat runs.
The symptoms we are asked about most are:
- Uncertainty over how often to clean
- Checking the result of a recent clean
- Extracts that have never been grease tested
- Ductwork where grease may be over the TR19 limits
A hospital like St Martins Hospital, about 3.3 miles west, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.
Questions to ask before you book
- What paperwork you get at the end
- Whether the price is fixed
- Whether the quote shows VAT
- If they look at the system before pricing
How the job changes from site to site
Vertical risers
Risers in multi-storey buildings can pass through other areas, so access is planned in advance.
Canopy and plenum
The plenum behind the filters can carry a lot of grease. Readings and pictures are taken in the plenum on every inspection.
Ickham: your questions answered
Which environmental health team covers Ickham?
That is Canterbury City council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in Ickham. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.
Can you clean school kitchen extracts in Ickham during the holidays?
Yes, holiday work suits schools best. There are about 3 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Ickham. Tell us your holiday dates and we’ll book the visit for when the site is empty.
What’s TR19?
A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark.
How do you keep the site clean during the work?
Floors and surfaces near the work are sheeted before work begins, and anything we remove is contained. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.
What do the grease readings need to be?
The TR19® Grease figures are a mean of 200 microns or less between cleans, and immediate spot cleaning wherever a reading hits 500 microns. Our report sets your readings against both.
How do you measure grease in a kitchen extract?
Grease thickness testing measures the layer of grease on the duct surfaces, using the Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) or Deposit Thickness Test (DTT). The results are given in microns.
What information do you need?
Just the basics: where it is, what kind of site, when it’s open and the access. Photos and the last report help too. Then call 0345 646 2711 or email us.
Will you produce a report for our insurer?
Yes, anywhere in the area we cover. Share the insurer’s request so the report addresses it.
What TR19 inspection cannot fix
Some problems need a different service or another trade:
- Fire safety duties beyond the extract system
- Sections with no access, until panels are fitted
- A faulty or failing extract fan
If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think.

How the visit works
The first job on site is protection: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. Then we make the system safe and start. The work on site takes a morning or less for one kitchen, more where there are several systems, and we clear up before we go. Visits to a village like Ickham are booked in advance, at a time that suits whoever runs the site.
- After the clean, we arrange a time to check the system.
- The same access points are opened up.
- We repeat the WFTT or DTT readings.
- We photograph each area to record how it was left.
- We report the findings and flag any areas that need more work.
Preparing for the visit
- Let us know about parking and loading
- Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
How to get a quote
Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in pictures, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work starts.

Aftercare tips
Once we’ve finished, these simple steps help:
- Send TR19 audit reports to your insurer on request
- Clean or swap grease filters as often as the kitchen needs
- Look out for grease drips round the canopy edge
- Wipe the canopy surfaces regularly
Keep the verification report next to the certificate it relates to. Together they show the system was cleaned and checked.
Keep all TR19 records together so the history is easy to show.
Why deal with it now?
Finding a hotspot early means a targeted spot clean rather than a bigger problem later. Ignored, the layer only gets thicker. It’s simpler to plan the work at Ickham now than to arrange it in a hurry later.
Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we’ll explain each part.

TR19 inspection around Ickham
According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 7 pubs, bars and clubs in Ickham and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. Ickham is covered by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. Food hygiene inspections in Ickham are the job of Canterbury City council’s environmental health team. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.
