Hound: your questions answered
Does the sea air around Hound make a difference to TR19 inspection?
It can. Being within about 1 mile of the sea means more corrosion on metalwork in Hound than inland. A fan housing that is rusting near the coast can fail sooner, so it’s worth catching early.
Can you get to a site in Hound?
Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Hound is covered. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes, of course. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we will suggest a schedule and quote for it.
How often should grease be tested?
Often enough to know the mean stays under 200 microns between cleans. The readings themselves tell you if the interval needs to change.
Do you work out of hours?
Yes. Evenings, nights and weekends are normal working hours for us, so you do not have to close during trading.
What types of premises do you cover?
Any site with a kitchen or a ventilation system to look after, from a single café to a large school. Hotels, schools, care homes, offices, shops and leisure sites are all part of our work.
What do the grease readings need to be?
The TR19® Grease figures are a mean of 200 microns or less between cleans, and immediate spot cleaning wherever a reading hits 500 microns. Our report sets your readings against both.
How do you keep the site clean during the work?
By covering it before any work starts. We keep the work contained and clean down when we finish.
TR19 inspection for kitchens and businesses in Hound
Grease thickness testing tells you how much grease is sitting in the canopy, ducts and fan. Readings are taken at set points using the Wet Film Thickness Test (WFTT) or the Deposit Thickness Test (DTT). From the numbers, you can see whether cleaning is due. If you’re dealing with missing TR19 certificates or history and ductwork where grease may be over the TR19 limits, we can put it right.
In a small place like Hound, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.
The report is your system’s health record: dated, with pictures, and showing what was done. Grease extract cleans are also certificated to TR19® Grease through the BESCA VHE portal and sits alongside the report.

What we are called out for in Hound
Grease in a duct is flammable fuel. A flare-up on the range can be drawn into the canopy and duct, and from there a fire can spread through the ductwork. Measuring it is the first step to keeping it under control.
Most sites get in touch after spotting one of these:
- Insurance renewals needing proof of TR19 cleaning
- Sites with gaps in their extract records
- Extracts that may be over the 200 micron mean
- Post-clean verification after another contractor’s clean
A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Church of St Mary or elsewhere in Hound, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.
Comparing quotes
- Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- Whether they’re fully insured
- Whether a survey comes first
Why act early in Hound
Surveying first means the clean goes to plan. Access problems are spotted in advance rather than on the night, so the clean covers the whole system. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.
When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before work begins.

What we do, step by step
A visit follows the same order every time: sheeting and protection first, make the system safe, do the work, clear away and hand over the paperwork. On site, the work takes a couple of hours for a typical kitchen extract system. The timing of a visit to Hound is set by you, and the travel is our side of the planning.
- After the clean, we arrange a time to check the system.
- We open the access points used on the clean.
- We repeat the WFTT or DTT readings.
- Photos are taken to show the condition after the clean.
- We report the findings and flag any areas that need more work.
Getting ready for the visit
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
Getting a quote
Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in pictures, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Part by part
Extract fan and discharge
A greasy fan works harder and wears faster. Readings show if it needs attention before the next clean.
Vertical risers
In buildings with several floors, the riser may pass through other tenants’ space, so access is planned in advance.

What staff can safely do
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that is where we come in.
Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
What a clean will not put right
We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what TR19 inspection will not do:
- Design faults in the extract system
- Hidden runs that need access panels first
- The responsible person’s own fire risk assessment
If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will say what we think before you book.

Grease, kitchens and Hound
At about 1 mile from the coast, Hound is close enough for sea air to matter. Salt air speeds up corrosion of roof-level fans, discharge cowls and their fixings. According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 19 bars, pubs and nightclubs in and around Hound, up to about a mile and a half out. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Hound sits within the area of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.
A hospital like Coldeast, about 2.4 miles east, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. A kitchen near Netley station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval.
Hound is about 3 miles east of Hythe, in Hampshire. Every kind of commercial site in Hound, we can take on TR19 inspection. Visits can be booked for evenings, overnight or weekends so the site keeps running. Across Hampshire, we cover 683 places, and Hound is one of them.

Keeping the system healthy
Good habits slow the build-up between visits. Our tips:
- Keep access panels clear and unpainted
- Wipe the canopy surfaces regularly
- Look out for grease drips round the canopy edge
- Send TR19 audit reports to your insurer on request
Keep the verification report next to the certificate it relates to. The pair gives a clear record of the clean and the check.
Keep certificates, reports and readings in one place so you can produce them quickly.
