TR19 inspection in Fareham, done properly

A pre-clean survey looks at the whole system, from canopy to discharge. Access is checked along the full length, and record grease readings at set points. We are often asked to deal with missing TR19 certificates or history and confirming a clean reached the whole system, on wet film thickness tests, deposit thickness tests and access surveys.

Kitchens in towns like Fareham are often in older buildings that were never designed for them, which can mean awkward duct routes, long flat runs and not enough access panels. Where the duct can’t be reached, new panels can be fitted, and anything left uncleaned is recorded on the report.

We are CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we are fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we have been trading since 2009.

How it works

Your trading hours come first. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that’s an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the job takes an hour or two for a single kitchen, longer for a large or complex system. Three things shape a visit in Fareham: when you’re closed, where we can park and how we get to the system.

  1. First we book a time that won’t disrupt cooking.
  2. The system is checked from canopy to discharge.
  3. Grease readings are taken at set points using WFTT or DTT.
  4. We photograph the test points and record any sections we cannot reach.
  5. The findings go into a report with readings, pictures and a recommended next clean.

Before we arrive

  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time

Fareham questions

Who inspects food businesses in Fareham?

In Fareham, it’s Fareham council that carries out food hygiene inspections. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.

Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Fareham in the summer holidays?

Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. Around Fareham, the Food Standards Agency lists about 21 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Just ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with your term dates and we will plan around them.

At what point does grease need cleaning?

The TR19® Grease figures are a mean of 200 microns or less between cleans, and immediate spot cleaning wherever a reading hits 500 microns. We show your readings against those figures.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes. If something urgent happens, like a fan failing or damage after a fire, call our 24/7 line and we’ll talk you through the next steps.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

Restaurants and pubs, hotels, schools and colleges, hospitals and care homes, offices and retail, plus food production and leisure sites.

Is TR19 a legal requirement?

No, not in itself. The Fire Safety Order 2005 still requires the responsible person to manage fire risk, which in a kitchen includes grease in the extract. Many insurers also expect TR19 cleaning.

Can you verify a clean after it’s been done?

After a clean, we take new readings and photos to show how the system was left. It can follow our own cleans or another contractor’s.

How long does grease testing take?

Typically, the inspection takes anything from an hour for a small canopy and short duct to a good part of a day for a large site. System size and access decide the rest.

How we price TR19 inspection

The price is fixed before any work begins. It takes into account:

  • What state the system is in
  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • The size of the system

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.

Asking for a quote

Photos let us diagnose from a distance. Try to include:

  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • Any previous report or certificate

Getting a quote does not take long. Send a few details and pictures, and we usually reply with a fixed quote within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

What the work involves, part by part

Canopy and plenum

The plenum behind the filters can carry a lot of grease. We take readings there and photograph it as part of every survey.

Schools, hospitals and care homes

We fit testing around service times and school holidays so meals aren’t affected.

Aftercare tips

To keep the system working properly between visits:

  • Look out for grease drips round the canopy edge
  • Clean or swap grease filters as often as the kitchen needs
  • Keep TR19 certificates, readings and reports together
  • Have the latest report ready for insurance renewals

After the inspection, we send a report showing each reading, its location and photos. Keep it with your fire safety and TR19 records.

Keep filters clean and in place. Gaps around filters let grease get past them.

Grease, kitchens and Fareham

Sea air reaches Fareham, which sits within about 2 miles of the coast. Near the sea, the fan and discharge at the top of a kitchen extract corrode faster than they would inland. Food Standards Agency data counts about 82 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 21 takeaways in and around Fareham, up to about a mile and a half out. A WFTT or DTT reading tells each of those kitchens whether its grease is staying under the 200-micron mean. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service covers Fareham. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

Bursars and site managers at schools such as St Jude's Catholic Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. Where a hall near St John The Evangelist, or anywhere in Fareham, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. Commuter trade near Fareham station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.

What happens if it’s left?

Do not wait for an EHO visit or insurance renewal to find gaps in your extract records. An inspection now gives a site in Fareham a current picture. An inspector or insurer will want to see recent records, so it makes sense to have them ready.

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why every job is surveyed first, and the price is agreed before work begins.
