Kitchen extract cleaning in RM10: how it works
The ducts are where most of the grease hides. Access panels let us into the duct runs and risers, removing thick grease by hand, then using degreasers, hot water or steam to suit the deposit. Anything out of reach is noted in the report, and new panels can be fitted. Typical jobs include an inspection that picked up a dirty extract and years of baked-on grease in the ducts, on discharge points, canopies and hoods and extract fans.
Everything the job needs comes with us, from protective sheeting to tools and access equipment. All we need from you is clear access and the right equipment switched off. On site, the work takes one visit for most kitchens, while large or complex systems may need more than one.
- First the diagnosis: a survey of the whole system and its access points.
- We record grease levels at set points, then fix the price.
- After the kitchen closes, we sheet the area and set up to contain grease and water.
- The treatment: heavy grease scraped out, then every part degreased to TR19® Grease.
- The sign-off: post-clean readings, a TR19 certificate and a photo report with the next clean date.
What affects the price in RM10
When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before we start.

Getting a quote
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in pictures, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start.
Near you in Dagenham
Around Dagenham, our work takes us to kitchens and buildings near Village Infants' School, St. Peter and St. Paul and Dagenham Park Community School and the streets around them. Other local landmarks include Cross Keys pub (within half a mile south-east) and Beam Valley Country Park (0.8 miles east). For rail, the closest station is Dagenham Dock station, about 1.2 miles south-west. Other landmarks nearby include Rush Green Hospital (1.5 miles north-east) and The Brewery (2.5 miles north). For a walk, there’s Dagenham Village Churchyard.
Where we work in RM10
In RM10, we work in places such as Dagenham, Becontree and South Hornchurch and well beyond. We cover every place we list for RM10, 7 in all, and kitchens are cleaned around their opening hours, overnight and at weekends included.
RM10 is within the area we cover, which takes in London and the South East. Every job is surveyed first and quoted at a fixed price.
Dagenham: Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Rush Green Hospital is the nearest hospital to Dagenham, about 1.5 miles north-east. Rainham Hall, about 2 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses near Dagenham; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions.
Keeping the system healthy
So the system stays in good health:
- Give the canopy a daily wipe
- Clean the grease filters regularly between TR19 cleans
- Book the next clean before the date on the report
- Report grease drips, smells or fan noise straight away
The report gives a recommended date for the next clean, set from your daily cooking hours and the readings we took. We can put the system on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly plan, so the date is not missed.
Run the extract whenever the kitchen is cooking. Cooking with the extract off lets grease and heat settle in the canopy, and the next clean has more to do.
Why it fails
The type of cooking changes the amount of grease. Fryers, grills and open flames throw much more fat into the extract than gentler cooking, so two kitchens with the same hours can need very different intervals.
If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- Cleaning needed before an insurance renewal or survey
- An extract that has never been cleaned to TR19
- Ductwork thick with old, hardened grease
- Stale cooking odours from the system
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.
Landlords, agents and facilities managers
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We are happy to deal with either side and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.
When something else is needed
Kitchen extract cleaning cannot fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not put right:
- A duct that is holed or coming apart
- Fire dampers that will not close (that needs damper testing and remedials)
- Blocked drains from a neglected grease trap (a separate service)
RM10: your questions answered
How much does kitchen extract cleaning cost?
It depends on the site, so we quote each one individually. For a quote, ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and tell us about the site and its opening hours.
What accreditations do you hold?
We clean to BESA TR19® Grease as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, and certificates go through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009.
What should I send you?
A short description and a few pictures, with the address and opening hours. We will ask for anything else we need.
Do we have to close the kitchen for the clean?
The clean is done when the kitchen is not cooking, so evenings, overnight, early mornings and weekends are all options. We need the equipment switched off and cooled first.
What does TR19 mean?
TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes, always. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey shows what needs doing and what access we need, and the quote is based on that.
Do you clean the whole extract system or just the canopy?
All of it, from the canopy through to the discharge. Sections with no access are listed on the report, and extra panels can be fitted.
