Kitchen extract cleaning in The Chart

Kitchen extract cleaning in The Chart

Many insurers ask for proof that the extract has been cleaned to TR19, and a claim can be refused or reduced without it. The certificate and photo report from each clean in The Chart give you that record, ready for the fire risk assessment file. Common call-outs are for grease drips onto cooking equipment and an inspection that picked up a dirty extract, across horizontal duct runs, vertical risers and discharge points. Searching for commercial kitchen extraction cleaning in The Chart? Duct Doctor has covered London and the South East since 2009, with a certificate and photo report after every clean.

What can be cleaned depends on what can be reached. Sections without access panels are recorded on the report, and new panels can be fitted so they’re cleaned next time.

Work in a small place like The Chart starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.

It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

Inside an extract duct: heavy deposits on the left, cleaned metal on the right

Different parts, different methods

Schools, hospitals and care homes

Institutional kitchens tend to cook to set hours, so cleans can be booked when the kitchen is closed. The certificate and report suit estates and compliance files.

Ductwork and risers

Risers take the extract up through floors to roof level, and grease often collects at the bottom of them. They’re cleaned through access points along their height.

What affects the quote in The Chart

The price is fixed before any work begins. It’s based on:

  • What state the system is in
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • Site rules, permits and inductions

A single site or a whole portfolio, the quote is built the same way: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. The price is fixed before work begins.

Asking for a quote

There’s no need for technical detail. It helps if you can send:

  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • Wide photos of the system and the area around it
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Add the site type and your opening hours, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Leave it or put it right?

Environmental health officers inspect food businesses, in The Chart as everywhere else, and a greasy canopy or dripping filters won’t go unnoticed. A clean extract is one less thing to worry about on the day. Rural sites cannot always move to another kitchen or room when something fails.

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, which can make the next visit longer. If you are unsure, ring 0345 646 2711 or email us for straight advice and a fixed quote.

What staff can safely do

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that is where we come in.

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

What kitchen extract cleaning can’t fix

To be straight with you, there are a few things this work won’t fix:

  • A fan motor or bearings that have failed (that needs a fan repair or replacement)
  • A damper that sticks or has a damaged link
  • Fat blocking the kitchen drains

If in doubt, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will say what we think before booking.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Extract fans
  • Canopies and hoods
  • Horizontal duct runs
  • Discharge points
  • Vertical risers
  • Plenums and filters

Common questions in The Chart

Can you work in The Chart outside opening hours?

Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. That way a site in The Chart doesn’t have to lose a day’s trading. Let us know the hours you’re closed and we will book within them.

Can a school canteen extract in The Chart be done out of term time?

Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. Food Standards Agency records list about 2 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of The Chart. You can phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email with the dates the site is empty.

Can you look after several sites?

Yes. Tell us the addresses and what each needs and you’ll get one fixed quote.

Will I get a certificate after the clean?

A TR19 certificate, plus a full photo report. The report lists what was cleaned, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next clean is due.

How much does kitchen extract cleaning cost in The Chart?

There’s no set price, as it depends on the job: how big it is, what state it’s in, how we reach it and the working hours. We fix the price before any work starts.

Which sectors do you work in?

Any commercial site with kitchens or ventilation, from a single café to a large school. Hotels, schools, care homes, offices, shops and leisure sites are all part of our work.

Will my insurer ask for a TR19 certificate?

Because a dirty extract can spread a fire through a building. Many policies say the extract must be cleaned to TR19, and a claim may be reduced without proof, so keep every certificate.

What’s TR19?

It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping and expects a risk-based approach.

When to call us in The Chart

Grease in the extract matters because it burns. Flames from a pan or grill can be pulled into the canopy by the fan, and once grease in the duct catches, fire can spread through the building’s ductwork. That is why controlling extract grease belongs in the fire risk assessment.

Clients usually contact us after spotting something like this:

  • Missing paperwork after a change of operator
  • Fat running down the canopy edge
  • Heavy grease build-up inside the duct runs
  • A kitchen with no current TR19 certificate

Where a hall near St Andrew's, or anywhere in The Chart, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

What your quote should include

  • Whether they’re fully insured
  • Whether they recommend a next date
  • What happens if part of the system cannot be accessed
  • Whether VAT is included

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

Kitchen extract cleaning around The Chart

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 6 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 8 sandwich bars and takeaways within about 1.5 miles of central The Chart. Each one that cooks under a canopy has an extract system that collects grease and needs regular cleaning. Kitchens in The Chart get their food hygiene inspections from Tandridge council. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after. The Chart is covered by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Tandridge Priory is the nearest hospital to The Chart, about 0.6 miles north-west. The process

There’s very little for your team to do on the day. Someone lets us in at the agreed time and shows us where everything is, and the rest is down to us. Afterwards, the area is left tidy and the written report follows. If you can send photos, we can arrive in The Chart knowing what to expect.

  1. You send photos or we visit, and the system is surveyed from canopy to discharge.
  2. We take grease readings at set points and send you a fixed quote.
  3. The kitchen is closed, the equipment cooled and everything nearby protected.
  4. Filters, canopy and plenum are cleaned, then the ducts, risers, fan and discharge.
  5. We re-test, photograph and send your certificate and photo report.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need

Ask for a quote

For a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711 or email us with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. A few pictures and your last certificate or report help a lot. We typically come back within one working day.
