Canopy cleaning in The Chart

Canopy cleans are done out of hours: after service, overnight or at the weekend. The equipment underneath is switched off, left to cool and sheeted, and the kitchen is left ready for the next service. If you have a canopy flagged at an environmental health inspection and wet, greasy drips from the hood, we can put it right, from canopy light fittings, plenum chambers and wall canopies onwards.

For a kitchen in or near The Chart, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.

A written report with photos follows every visit, so there’s a dated record of the work. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Different parts, different methods

Pub and hotel kitchens

In a pub or hotel, the canopy is often in view of staff all day, so drips and smells soon become a daily nuisance. Cleaning the canopy and plenum sorts it.

Plenums and filter housings

A plenum that hasn’t been cleaned for a long time can hold a thick layer of grease. We remove thick grease by hand, then degrease.

When it’s something else

Before booking, it helps to know what’s not included:

  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
  • Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
  • A fan that can’t pull enough air because it’s worn out

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Island canopies
  • Baffle filters
  • Grease gutters
  • Wall canopies
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Plenum chambers

Looking after it afterwards

Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it helps at the next visit:

  • Clean the hood’s outer surfaces daily
  • Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
  • Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
  • Make sure filters sit tight in the housing

Keep the photo report with your maintenance log, so it’s ready when an EHO, insurer or fire officer asks. Before and after pictures speak for themselves.

Do not let canopy gutters fill to the brim. Overflowing troughs are the usual cause of drips onto the range, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.

How the visit works

There’s very little for your team to do on the day. A contact on site lets us in at the agreed time and points us to the system, and the rest is down to us. Afterwards, the area is left tidy and the written report follows. For a village or hamlet like The Chart, tell us about narrow lanes, gates and parking when you book.

  1. We look at the canopy first, from photos or on a visit.
  2. The range is turned off and allowed to cool before we cover it.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and photos are taken.

Preparing for the visit

  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Have your last certificate or report to hand

Canopy cleaning in The Chart: the local picture

Look up The Chart on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you will find about 6 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 8 takeaways and sandwich shops in The Chart and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Wherever there’s a canopy over the cooking, its hood and plenum collect grease with every service. The Chart is covered by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. In The Chart, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Tandridge council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.

Where a hall near St Andrew's, or anywhere in The Chart, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Tandridge Priory (about 0.6 miles north-west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands. Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Chartwell is about 1.9 miles east), access may need planning.

The Chart is about 6 miles south-east of Caterham, in Surrey. Sites in The Chart get the same service as everywhere we cover: diagnosis first, a fixed price, out-of-hours working where needed and a written report with photos. Our Surrey coverage runs to 395 places, and The Chart is one of them. Our London page covers sites nearby (18 miles or so).

Every address in RH8 is covered for canopy cleaning, from the main roads to the quietest streets. Whether your site is on Stoneleigh Road, St Andrews Way and Ridlands Lane or a nearby road, our technicians can take on the work. Further out, we also cover Epsom (15 miles north-west), Horley (10 miles south-west), Redhill (9 miles west), Ewell (15 miles north-west), Reigate (10 miles west) and Caterham (6 miles north-west).

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

Sites vary more than people expect. The main factors:

  • The times the site is available
  • The number of sites or systems
  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That’s why every job is surveyed first, and why the quote is fixed before work begins.

Asking for a quote

When you contact us, it’s useful to have:

  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • The postcode and the type of business
  • Problems your staff have spotted

If you need canopy cleaning in The Chart, call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos. Let us know the site type and the opening hours, and send photos or your last report if you can. A fixed quote usually follows within one working day.

Managing agents and facilities teams in The Chart

Whether it’s one building or many, the standard is the same: the system surveyed, the price fixed, the visit fitted around trading and everything written up afterwards.

We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we are happy to quote for all of it.

Questions from The Chart

Who carries out food hygiene inspections in The Chart?

Kitchens in The Chart are inspected by Tandridge council’s environmental health officers. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

Can you get to a site in The Chart?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and The Chart is covered. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not usually. Visits are timed for when the area is closed, such as overnight or at a weekend, so the site can carry on as normal.

Do you clean the grease filters as part of a canopy clean?

We remove the filters to reach the plenum, then clean and refit them. We will tell you if any need replacing.

What happens to the waste?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. We do not leave it behind.

Can you clean the canopy outside our opening hours?

Out-of-hours cleans are how we work, at night, early in the morning or at weekends. We leave it clean and ready for the next service.

What do you do to protect the area?

Protection goes down first: floor sheeting and covers over nearby surfaces and equipment. We tidy up and take our waste away before we leave.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

Commercial premises of every kind: kitchens, offices, schools, healthcare, retail, leisure and food production. We fit the work around how the site operates.

What your team can do, and what needs us

When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We’ll take a look and give you a fixed quote.

A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.
