How we handle kitchen extract cleaning in Grove
Has the extract gone a while without a clean, or has the paperwork gone missing? Just call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with pictures of the canopy and filters, and we’ll come back with a fixed price for the work in Grove, usually within one working day. The work covers plenums and filters, horizontal duct runs and canopies and hoods, and the jobs we see most are fat running down the canopy edge and an overdue clean flagged by an EHO or fire officer. When a restaurant in Grove asks for duct cleaning, it’s nearly always the kitchen extract they mean, and that is our main job: canopy to fan, to TR19® Grease.
Access decides how thorough a clean can be. Sections without access panels are recorded on the report, and new panels can be fitted so they’re cleaned next time.
Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.
Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers
We regularly work with managing agents. Send the address, what’s needed and how access works, and we’ll send a fixed quote.
Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we can quote for the whole system.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.
If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.
Your questions about kitchen extract cleaning in Grove
Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in Grove?
In Grove, it’s Canterbury City council that carries out food hygiene inspections. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.
Which fire authority looks after Grove?
Grove is in the area of Kent Fire and Rescue Service. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for anything that can’t wait until a planned visit. Ring any time and tell us what’s happened.
What do you need from me for a quote?
The site address, the type of premises and your opening hours, along with a few pictures and any previous report.
What’s TR19?
A BESA specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It isn’t legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.
Will the clean disrupt our service?
We work around your hours. Most kitchens book us overnight or at weekends, so you do not lose a service.
Will my insurer ask for a TR19 certificate?
Extract grease is fuel for a kitchen fire, which is why many insurers require TR19 cleaning. Our certificate and photo report give you that evidence.
Where does the waste go?
It leaves the site with us when we go. While we work, it’s kept contained to keep the area clean.
Part by part
Canopy and plenum
The canopy catches the vapour, and the plenum behind the filters is where it first condenses. We clean both inside and out, including the filter housing.
Ductwork and risers
Vertical risers carry the air up through the building, and grease runs down their walls and pools at the base. Access panels along the riser let us clean it in sections.
The process
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before any work starts, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. The work itself takes a few hours for a small kitchen, longer for a large system. The timing of a visit to Grove is set by you, and the travel is our side of the planning.
- First comes a survey of the whole system, by photos or a visit.
- Set points are tested for grease thickness and the quote is fixed before work begins.
- With the kitchen closed and equipment off and cool, the area is sheeted.
- The whole route is cleaned, from the canopy through the ductwork to the fan and the discharge.
- Readings and photos are taken again, and you receive a TR19 certificate and photo report.
How to prepare
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
- Tell us where we can park and unload

Grease, kitchens and Grove
Food Standards Agency records include about 3 bars, pubs and nightclubs within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Grove. Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Grove sits within the area of Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. In Grove, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Canterbury City council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.
Bursars and site managers at schools such as Preston Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. Where a hall near Church of St Mildred, or anywhere in Grove, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

Looking after it afterwards
Simple habits between visits make a real difference. Our advice:
- Tell us when the extract starts to drip or smell
- Make sure every filter is fitted before cooking
- File each certificate with the fire risk assessment
- Don’t let the canopy gutters overflow
When the clean is finished, grease readings are taken again at the same points, so you can see the difference in numbers as well as pictures. Your TR19 certificate is then issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.
Report drips, smells or a noisy fan early. Grease dripping from the canopy, a burning smell or a fan that sounds rough are all signs of build-up, and a grease thickness test can confirm it.
Do you need kitchen extract cleaning in Grove?
Grease in an extract starts as vapour. As the air cools on its way through the duct, the fat condenses and sticks, building a layer that gets thicker with every service. Filters catch some of it, but never all.
The symptoms we’re asked about most are:
- A kitchen taken over without any extract records
- A system with no record of a TR19 clean
- Extraction mentioned at an environmental health visit
- Grease smells coming from the extract
If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Goodnestone Park is about 4.7 miles south), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning.
Questions to ask before booking
- Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
- What insurance they carry
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- If they look at the system before pricing
