When it’s something else

We will not sell you work that does not address the problem, so here are the limits:

  • A noisy or failed extract fan
  • An extract that was undersized from the start
  • Grease already built up in the ductwork, which needs a full TR19 clean

If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll say what we think.

About our grease filter exchange in Steep

A filter service works alongside TR19® cleaning, not instead of it. Clean filters reduce the grease reaching the ducts, but some grease still passes through as vapour. So the canopy, plenum and ducts still need their full TR19 clean. If you have weak extraction at the canopy and filters that come out of the sink still dirty, we can help, from mesh filters, baffle filters and restaurants and pubs onwards.

In a village or hamlet like Steep, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are typically a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.

Every visit ends with a written report and photos, so there’s a dated record of the work. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

What we do, step by step

The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, while signing off means the written report and photos. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes a few minutes per canopy, longer for a large kitchen with several canopies. In a small place like Steep, the journey is planned ahead and the visit arranged around the site’s hours.

  1. First, we check the canopies and the filters in them.
  2. We note any filters that are bent, damaged or missing.
  3. Greasy filters are swapped for clean ones.
  4. The filters are checked for fit before we go.
  5. Anything that needs attention, such as a greasy plenum, is pointed out.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in

How to get a quote

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Add the site type and your opening hours, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Advice

What staff can safely do

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We will take a look and give you a fixed quote.

Why deal with it now?

Leaving filters too long pushes more grease into the plenum and ducts. The ductwork then loads up faster, and grease may build up faster than the cleaning interval allows. Somewhere as small as Steep, losing a kitchen or building to a fault is felt by everyone who uses it.

Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before work begins.

Steep questions

Which environmental health team covers Steep?

Food hygiene inspections in Steep are carried out by East Hampshire council. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

Can a school canteen extract in Steep be done out of term time?

Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. With about 5 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Steep, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. You can phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with the dates the site is empty.

What if some of our filters are damaged?

Each filter is looked at when we exchange. Any that are bent or damaged are flagged, because gaps let grease into the plenum.

How much does a filter exchange service cost?

It depends on the number and type of filters and how often they’re changed. Just call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email for a fixed quote, normally within one working day.

Do you clean filters as well as exchanging them?

We offer filter cleaning as well as exchange. We will talk you through which suits your kitchen when we quote.

Do you work with multi-site operators?

Yes. We work across South East England and London, so sites at different addresses can be planned together as one programme. Each site gets its own report and photos.

What do you do with what you remove?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, including grease, debris and dirty water. We don’t leave it behind.

Do you work in Steep?

Yes. We work in Steep and the rest of Hampshire, within our South East and London area. To book, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too across Hampshire. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.

From a single site to a large estate, you get the same standard: the system surveyed, the price fixed, the visit fitted around trading and everything written up afterwards.

Steep kitchens: local notes

The FSA’s data shows about 8 pubs, bars and clubs registered across Steep and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. Fire safety in Steep falls to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. It’s East Hampshire council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Steep. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Petersfield Community Hospital is the nearest hospital to Steep, about 1.5 miles south. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Church of All Saints or elsewhere in Steep, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often. Bursars and site managers at schools such as Steep Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

Steep is about 1 mile north of Petersfield, in Hampshire. How the job changes from site to site

Canopy filter housings

Filters sit in a housing or channel in the canopy. If it’s bent or greasy, filters will not seat properly.

Mesh filters

Older or smaller canopies often use mesh filters. We exchange them on the same basis as baffles.

Keeping the system healthy

After the visit, a few habits help the work last:

  • Make sure no filter is left out
  • Never cook with the extract switched off
  • Wipe the outside of the canopy as part of daily cleaning
  • Mention it if the kitchen gets busier

Once the clean filters are in, the kitchen can cook straight away. We take the greasy filters with us for cleaning.

A kitchen that is getting busier needs its filters changed more often. Changing the interval early stops grease building up unseen in the ducts.
