What the work involves, part by part

Plenums and filter housings

Behind the grease filters is the plenum. Grease that slips past the filters settles there, and it’s cleaned every time we clean the canopy.

Grease troughs and gutters

A blocked or full trough is the usual cause of grease dripping from the canopy. We clean it out so the grease has somewhere to go.

Canopy cleaning in Steep, done properly

We’ve been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Typical jobs include an EHO comment about the canopy and fat running down the front of the hood, on grease gutters, wall canopies and canopy light fittings.

Somewhere as small as Steep, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

Aftercare tips

Here’s the after-treatment advice, in brief:

  • Check filters are not leaving gaps
  • Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle
  • Keep every filter in place while cooking
  • Check and empty canopy gutters regularly

We clear away the sheeting, waste grease and water before we leave. Filters are back in place and seated properly, and the kitchen is ready to cook.

Do not let canopy gutters fill to the brim. Overflowing troughs are the usual cause of drips onto the range, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.

How the visit works

When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the pictures you sent. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. After that, the work takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Rural roads and tight entrances are worth telling us about before a visit to Steep.

  1. First the canopy is surveyed, by pictures or in person.
  2. Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Find the previous report, if there is one

Getting a quote

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

What staff can safely do

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Why act early in Steep

Getting the canopy cleaned in Steep now saves a bigger job later. It takes a few hours for most canopies, done while the kitchen is closed. Put off, the grease simply moves further into the system. If the system at a site near Steep fails, there may be nowhere nearby to move to.

You will not find a price list here, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we will talk you through it.

Why us?

Canopy cleaning in Steep: the local picture

Food Standards Agency records include about 8 bars, pubs and nightclubs within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Steep. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. It’s East Hampshire council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Steep. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. The fire and rescue service for Steep is Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of All Saints, or anywhere in Steep, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. Multi-site and managed buildings

Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We cover South East England and London, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Hampshire. Larger estates can be phased building by building around the people who use them.

Fixed quotes for canopy cleaning in Steep

Sites vary more than people expect. What affects the quote:

  • The size of the system
  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
  • How many systems or sites are involved
  • Travel, parking and unloading

Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before any work starts.

Asking for a quote

A few details help us quote accurately. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • A few general shots of the system
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site
  • The postcode and the type of business
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall

To get a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711 or email us with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. You will normally have a quote within one working day.

Steep questions

Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Steep in the summer holidays?

Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. There are about 5 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Steep. Send us your term dates when you ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email, and we’ll fit the work in.

Who carries out food hygiene inspections in Steep?

That is East Hampshire council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in Steep. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and the emergency line covers the rest.

What causes grease to drip from the hood?

Grease that builds up inside the canopy has to go somewhere. Once the troughs and plenum are full, it runs down and drips, often mixed with condensation. A thorough clean stops it.

How long does canopy cleaning take?

One lightly soiled hood does not take long, but large or heavily soiled canopies take longer. We’ll tell you what to expect.

Does a canopy clean meet TR19?

On its own, a canopy clean is a useful extra rather than a full TR19 clean. We’ll make clear on the report which parts were cleaned so nobody mistakes it for a full system clean.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not usually. Out-of-hours visits keep the disruption down. Larger jobs can be phased over several visits to keep things running.

Can you clean the canopy outside our opening hours?

We clean out of hours as a matter of course, at night, early in the morning or at weekends. We leave it clean and ready for the next service.
