Grease filter exchange in South Ealing
In South Ealing, our filter exchange runs on a schedule set by how much the kitchen cooks. Busy kitchens need changes more often, lighter ones less. The interval is agreed before the first visit. If you have hand-washed filters that still look greasy and grease filters clogged with grease, we can put it right.
London kitchens are often tucked into basements or the back of a building, with extract ducts that can climb several floors to discharge at roof level. For a kitchen in South Ealing, that typically means a longer system to clean and more access panels to plan around.
It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

Looking after it afterwards
No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. A few tips:
- Wipe the outside of the canopy as part of daily cleaning
- Mention it if the kitchen gets busier
- Tell us if a filter is bent or damaged
- Always run the extract while cooking
Between visits, check that every filter is still in place. A missing filter leaves a gap for grease so tell us if you need a replacement.
Bent or missing filters let grease straight past. Sorting them now keeps grease where it can be caught.
Part by part
Baffle filters
Baffle filters are a common choice for commercial canopies. They do not clean themselves as the collected grease builds up between the blades.
Busy restaurant and pub kitchens
Kitchens that fry and grill all day load their filters fast. They often need the shortest exchange interval.
Leave it or put it right?
Dripping canopies and greasy smells often start with the filters. Drips land on surfaces and equipment below and that is the kind of thing inspectors look for. Every month a London system goes without attention adds to what has to be done later.
Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are not sure what’s needed, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email for straight advice and a fixed quote.

Common problems we fix in South Ealing
The type of cooking matters. Frying, grilling and chargrilling produce far more grease than steaming or baking, so the right exchange interval varies.
It’s time to book a visit if you see:
- Filters left unwashed on busy weeks
- Bent or damaged filters that don’t sit properly
- Drips falling from the filters onto equipment
- Grease left in baffles after washing
A hospital like Ealing Hospital, about 1.7 miles west, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.
Questions to ask before booking
- Whether they’re fully insured
- Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
- Exactly which parts of the system are covered
- Whether they recommend a next date
Landlords, agents and facilities managers
We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements, and we will send a fixed quote.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
South Ealing questions
Who is the fire and rescue service for South Ealing?
London Fire Brigade is the fire and rescue service for South Ealing. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.
Do you work overnight in South Ealing?
Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. The work in South Ealing can fit around your hours. Just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with your opening times and we will plan around them.
What should go in our maintenance log?
Each report and certificate we give you, kept together in your maintenance log with your in-house cleaning records. BESA says certificates should show the date, location and technician.
Are you insured?
Yes. We’re fully insured, and the details are available on request.
What is TR19?
BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark.
What if parts of the system cannot be reached?
Anything we can’t reach goes on the report, with a note of where it is, and we explain what access is needed, such as extra access panels in ductwork.
Can we skip TR19 cleans if the filters are changed regularly?
It is not. Clean filters help keep grease down, but the ducts and plenum still need cleaning at the right interval.
Do you recommend a next date?
Yes. We put a recommended next date on the report. BESA’s minimum intervals for kitchen extracts range from 3-monthly for heavy use to 12-monthly for light use, and fire dampers need testing at least once a year.
How the visit works
We turn up at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool before any work starts, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. The work itself takes anything from a few minutes to an hour or so, depending on the number of filters. If your building in South Ealing has sign-in rules, permits or key holders, mention them when you book.
- We count and measure the filters in every canopy.
- Together we set how often the filters should be changed.
- Each visit starts with the used filters being removed.
- Clean, dry filters are fitted in their place, with no gaps left between them.
- Anything we notice, such as bent filters or a dirty plenum, is pointed out.
Before we arrive
- Agree a time when the area can be out of use
- Clear loose items from the work area
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down

The Food Standards Agency lists about 87 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 13 hotels and B&Bs as registered food businesses in and around South Ealing, up to about a mile and a half out. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. In London, kitchens are usually cleaned overnight, when the kitchen is closed and loading is easier. In South Ealing, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Ealing council. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

- A canopy that doesn’t capture the vapour properly
