Fire damper testing in Ware
We’re often asked to take on annual damper testing by the people who look after buildings in and around Ware. Send us the damper schedule or the drawings if you have them, and we will plan the testing around when the building is in use. Common call-outs are for dampers overdue for their annual drop test and dust or grease build-up on damper blades, on fusible link fire dampers, motorised smoke dampers and riser dampers.
Around a town like Ware, damper testing normally means schools, offices, care homes, hotels and flats. Wherever a duct crosses a fire-resisting wall or floor, the damper there needs testing at least once a year.
A written report with photos follows every visit, so there’s a dated record of the work. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Why it’s worth doing now in Ware
If a damper can’t close, the wall it sits in has a hole in it during a fire. Everything else about the compartment can be right and the duct still lets it down. Testing now is how you find out before it matters. The sooner the work is done, the simpler the job for a site in Ware.
A single site or a whole portfolio, the quote is built the same way: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. You’ll have a fixed price before any work starts.

Fire dampers in Ware buildings
There are about 15 schools, colleges and universities, about 15 care, childcare and hospital premises and about 4 hotels and B&Bs on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of central Ware. If any of them has ducted ventilation, its dampers need an annual drop test at least. Hertford County Hospital is the nearest hospital, about 2.8 miles south-west of Ware. Where patients or residents may need help to leave a building, working dampers matter all the more. Ware is covered by Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic buildings, and that covers fire safety systems such as dampers.
Site managers at schools such as Christ Church CofE (VA) Primary School and Nursery typically find the summer break the easiest time for ceiling work like damper testing. Healthcare buildings such as Hertford County Hospital (about 2.8 miles south-west) rely on fire compartments, and the dampers in them need testing at least annually. If you manage offices, shops or flats near Ware station, the ductwork in them may pass through fire-resisting walls and floors, and any dampers need testing at least once a year.

What affects the quote in Ware
We don’t publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. What we look at:
- Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
- A single visit or a regular plan
- The times the site is available
- Where the site is and how we reach it
Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before any work starts.
Asking for a quote
Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Useful things to send:
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
- Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
- The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
To get a fixed quote, call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. You’ll usually have a quote within one working day.
What fire damper testing can’t fix
We’d rather tell you now than book work that won’t help, so these are the things it won’t cover:
- Sign-off of the whole building’s fire safety
- Holes around ductwork in fire-resisting walls
- Designing the building’s fire compartments
Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will tell you honestly before you book.
Parts of the system we cover
- Motorised smoke dampers
- Riser dampers
- Hospitals and care homes
- Fusible link fire dampers
- Offices and schools
- Wall and floor dampers
Part by part
Smoke dampers
A smoke damper that does not respond to its controls is recorded as a fault, with a note of what we found.
Offices and retail
Offices and shops often have dampers above ceilings that are rarely opened. Testing can be done outside opening hours to keep disruption down.
The process
Your staff do not need to do much on the day. Someone lets us in at the agreed time and shows us where everything is, and the rest is down to us. Before we leave, the area is tidied and the paperwork follows. In Ware, the visit is planned around your opening hours, parking and access to the system.
- First we check the schedule and the last set of results.
- We locate every damper and note any we can’t reach.
- We test fire dampers by dropping them and smoke dampers by operating them through the controls.
- Passes are reset and any failures recorded with the reason.
- The report sets out the results, and we can quote to repair or replace failed dampers.
Preparing for the visit
- Move anything stored near the system
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
- Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
Ask for a quote
Getting a quote does not take long. Send a few details and photos, and we normally reply with a fixed quote within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.
Advice
What your team can do, and what needs us
A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.
When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that will not come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.
Looking after it afterwards
Results last longer with the right care. Here’s what we suggest:
- Fix water leaks in plant rooms and risers promptly
- Store test records alongside the fire risk assessment
- Do not let hatches get painted shut or boarded over
- Never wedge or tie a damper open
Dampers we couldn’t reach are listed with the reason, for example a missing panel or a covered hatch. We can fit access panels so they can be tested next time.
Clean ductwork means less dust and grease reaching the dampers. Duct cleaning and damper testing can be planned side by side.
FAQs for Ware
Do you work overnight in Ware?
Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. Your customers, staff or residents in Ware needn’t be disturbed. Just phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos with your opening times and we’ll plan around them.
Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Ware?
Ware is in the area of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. If a fire safety officer audits the building, they may ask for the latest damper test records.
How much does fire damper testing cost?
There’s no set price, as it depends on the job: how big it is, what state it’s in, how we reach it and the working hours. You get a fixed price before any work starts.
Who has the legal duty for fire safety?
It depends on the building. The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty on the responsible person, which can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, an FM or a managing agent.
How often does BESA say fire dampers should be tested?
The guidance from BESA is at least annually, by a competent person. A test on completion of installation comes first.
Are you fully insured?
Yes. We’re fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.
How do you protect the area?
Floors and surfaces near the work are sheeted before work begins, and anything we remove is contained. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.
Is a quote from pictures possible?
In many cases, yes. Photos of the system and the access, plus your opening hours and last report, are often enough. Where we cannot see enough, we arrange a survey.
