Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in Tonwell
Responsible persons, facilities managers and managing agents call us when damper testing falls due in Tonwell. If there’s a damper register or a set of drawings, share it with us, and we’ll plan the testing around when the building is in use. Common call-outs are for missing or out-of-date damper records and dampers affected by leaks or condensation, on motorised smoke dampers, riser dampers and wall and floor dampers.
Rural buildings that have been converted or extended can have ducts passing through fire-resisting walls, and the dampers in them are easily forgotten. A first test typically starts with finding them all.
We’re CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we’re fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

How the job changes from site to site
Ceiling voids and risers
Ceiling voids are where lots of dampers end up. We lift tiles where necessary and put them back as we found them.
Smoke dampers
If a smoke damper will not operate when signalled, it goes on the report as a failure, with a note of what we found.

How we price fire damper testing
The quote reflects the site in front of us. We consider:
- Any permits to work or inductions
- A single visit or a regular plan
- Working hours and out-of-hours timing
- How big the system is
Every site is different, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.
What we need to know
The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. With your enquiry, please include:
- Any previous report or certificate
- Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
- The postcode and the type of business
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before work begins.
Tonwell questions
Do you do school damper testing in Tonwell in the summer holidays?
Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. Food Standards Agency records list about 2 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Tonwell. Send us your term dates when you give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email, and we will fit the work in.
Can you work in Tonwell outside opening hours?
Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. The site is handed back ready to open. Let us know the hours you are closed and we’ll book within them.
Whose job is it to make sure fire dampers are tested?
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 puts it on the responsible person. Annual testing by a competent person, with written records, is a practical way to show the duty is being met.
How long will damper testing take?
Testing takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. Large buildings can be split over several visits, so phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us for a quote.
Are you accredited?
We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The Vent Hygiene Elite scheme is run by BESCA and audited independently.
Is TR19 a legal requirement?
No. The law sets the duty; TR19® is the benchmark used to show it’s met. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, the responsible person must reduce fire risk, and many insurers can refuse or reduce a claim without proof of cleaning.
What is TR19?
A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It isn’t legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.
How often do fire dampers need drop testing?
BESA’s guidance is a test on installation and at least once a year after that. Some sites choose to test more often where the risk is higher.
When it’s something else
A few issues sit outside what this work can do:
- Holes around ductwork in fire-resisting walls
- Missing dampers that a designer needs to specify
- Fire alarm or control system faults behind a smoke damper
If you are not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.
What the work covers
- Offices and schools
- Riser dampers
- Motorised smoke dampers
- Wall and floor dampers
- Fusible link fire dampers
- Hospitals and care homes
Aftercare tips
After the visit, a few habits help the work last:
- Brief other trades about dampers in ceilings and risers
- Make sure access panels stay clear and usable
- Fix water leaks in plant rooms and risers promptly
- Add new dampers to the register as they’re fitted
After testing, you get a report listing each of the fire and smoke dampers we tested, with its location and its result. Keep it with the building’s fire safety records so it’s ready when your assessor or insurer asks.
Deal with leaks and condensation near dampers quickly. Rusted parts are one of the main reasons dampers fail to close.
For landlords and multi-site operators
We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we can quote for the whole system.
We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare in Tonwell and across Hertfordshire. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.

Fire safety in Tonwell falls to Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. When a fire safety officer audits a non-domestic building, maintenance of systems like dampers can come up.
Hospitals such as Hertford County Hospital, about 3 miles south, are a good example of buildings with dampers on many floors; if you manage a clinic, surgery or care home near Tonwell, the same annual testing applies. If you manage a historic building in the area (Aston Bury is about 4.6 miles north-west), dampers fitted during conversions can be hard to reach and need recording. For schools like Tonwell St Mary's Church of England Primary School, damper testing is easiest in the holidays, when corridors and ceilings are clear.

What happens if it’s left?
Sites in Tonwell tested every year build up a history for each damper so repeat problems show up early. If the same damper keeps giving trouble, the record shows it before it becomes a failure. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.
You will not find a price list here, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we’ll explain what it covers.

How the visit works
Each visit runs to the same pattern: protect the area, make the system safe, carry out the fire damper testing, clear away and leave you the report. On site, the work takes a morning or an afternoon for a small number of dampers, longer where there are many. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Tonwell, let us know and we’ll plan around it.
- We go through the damper schedule and any previous faults.
- Each damper is found and checked for access.
- Fire dampers are drop tested, and smoke dampers are tested through their controls.
- Passes are reset and any failures recorded with the reason.
- The report sets out the results, and we can quote to repair or replace failed dampers.
How to prepare
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
- Let us know about parking and loading
