Keeping the system healthy

After the visit, a few habits help the work last:

  • Do not scrape the canopy with metal tools
  • Check and empty canopy gutters regularly
  • Run the extract the whole time you are cooking
  • Check filters are not leaving gaps

A full system clean comes with a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. Where only the canopy is done, the report says so clearly.

Run the extract for as long as anything is cooking. Air that keeps moving carries less grease onto the canopy.

Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Ware

Every TR19® Grease clean includes the canopy, but a canopy can also need cleaning on its own, between full system cleans. In that case, the report makes clear what was and wasn’t cleaned, so your records stay accurate. We’re often asked to deal with a canopy that no longer draws the smoke away and condensation running down the canopy, across plenum chambers, wall canopies and canopy light fittings.

For a pub, café or restaurant in a town like Ware, losing a day’s trade to cleaning is not an option, so cleans are booked after closing, early in the morning or on a quiet day. By the next service, the kitchen is ready to cook in again.

Every visit ends with a written report and photos, so you have a record of what was done and when. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

What happens on the day

A visit follows the same order every time: protect the area, make the system safe, do the work, clear away and leave you the report. On site, the work takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. The more we can see of the system beforehand, the smoother the visit to Ware will be.

  1. First the canopy is surveyed, by pictures or in person.
  2. Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
  3. We remove the grease filters and clean the plenum and filter housing.
  4. Inside and out, the canopy and its grease channels are degreased.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

Before we arrive

  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Find the previous report, if there is one

Ask for a quote

Every quote begins with a look at the system, from your pictures and details or, where that isn’t enough, a survey on site. After that, you get a fixed price for the work so you know the cost before we start.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning

The quote reflects the site in front of us. We consider:

  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • What state the system is in
  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends

What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why every job is surveyed first, and why the quote is fixed before we start.

What to send for a quote

To help us quote quickly, please include:

  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • Any previous report or certificate
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

When to call us in Ware

Any canopy in Ware that is used for cooking will gather grease in the end. That grease is fuel sitting right above the heat, so a flare-up near a greasy hood can quickly become a fire.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Wet, greasy drips from the hood
  • Canopy gutters full of old fat
  • Grease filters blocking between washes
  • An EHO comment about the canopy

Where a hall near Christ Church Ware, or anywhere in Ware, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

Before booking anyone

  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • What records you’ll receive afterwards
  • What happens if part of the system cannot be accessed
  • Whether the price is fixed

Questions to ask before you book

What happens if it’s left?

A canopy clean in Ware now stops the grease spreading further. It takes a few hours for most canopies, out of hours so service carries on. Put off, the grease simply moves further into the system. Nothing in a duct, damper or fan improves by being left.

Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

Why Ware businesses choose us

  • Full insurance on every job
  • CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001
  • A single point of contact for sites across the South East and London
  • A fixed price before any work starts

When it’s something else

We won’t sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so here are the limits:

  • Filters that no longer seal in the housing
  • A light fitting that doesn’t work
  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor

Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will tell you honestly before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Grease gutters
  • Baffle filters
  • Plenum chambers
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Island canopies
  • Wall canopies

Kitchen extracts in Ware

The Food Standards Agency lists about 20 pubs and bars and about 4 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses as registered food businesses across Ware and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Ware sits within the area of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. It’s East Hertfordshire council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Ware. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.

If you run a café or takeaway near Ware station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits. Term dates shape school work: for a school like Christ Church CofE (VA) Primary School and Nursery, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that’s where we come in.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Ware questions

Who is the fire and rescue service for Ware?

That’s Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

Can a school canteen extract in Ware be done out of term time?

Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. The FSA’s register shows about 15 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Ware. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.

What information do you need?

A short description and a few photos, with the address and opening hours. We’ll ask for anything else we need.

What happens if you cannot reach some of it?

They’re marked on the report. Often the fix is extra access, such as new panels in ductwork, and we can fit those.

What do you do to protect the area?

We start with protection: floor sheeting and covers over nearby surfaces and equipment. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.

How much does canopy cleaning cost?

Every site is different, so each gets its own fixed quote. For a quote, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and tell us about the site and its opening hours.

What paperwork do I get after a canopy clean?

A photo report shows the canopy and plenum before and after. Full system cleans also come with a TR19 certificate.

Do you clean the grease filters as part of a canopy clean?

The filters are removed, cleaned and put back. We check each one seats properly, because gaps let grease through.
