About our fire damper testing in Rock
The point of testing is to find dampers that fail. Where a blade sticks, a link is damaged or corrosion has set in, we note it and can quote to repair or replace the damper rather than leaving you with a problem and no fix. The work covers motorised smoke dampers, offices and schools and hospitals and care homes, and common reasons people get in touch are dampers that stick or won’t close fully and fire dampers with no recent test record.
Rural buildings that have been converted or extended can have ducts passing through fire-resisting walls, where the dampers are easy to overlook. A first test typically starts with finding them all.
For insurers and inspectors, the record counts. So every job comes with a written report and pictures, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Part by part
Fusible link fire dampers
Most fire dampers are held open by a fusible link. Heat melts the link and the blade falls shut across the duct. Testing means dropping the blade, checking the full close and resetting it.
Offices and retail
In shared buildings, some dampers sit inside tenants’ space. Access to each area is planned with whoever manages the building.
Multi-site and managed buildings
When the building owner and the occupier are different, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We’re happy to deal with either side, and the report can go to both.
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with photos, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.
A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.
Questions from Rock
Who is the fire and rescue service for Rock?
Fire safety enforcement in Rock is handled by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. BESA guidance is that every fire damper is tested at least once a year, so an officer or insurer may expect a report less than a year old.
Do you work at weekends in Rock?
Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. It means the site in Rock keeps running as normal. When you give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form, mention when the site is quiet.
What do you do with what you remove?
Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, including grease, debris and dirty water. None of it is left on site.
Is TR19 a legal requirement?
Not in itself. TR19® is the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs check against, and many insurance policies ask for proof of TR19® cleaning. The law behind it is the Fire Safety Order 2005 in England and Wales.
How much time does a damper test visit need?
Expect it to take anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. Access is the biggest factor, and we’ll give you an idea when we quote.
What paperwork do we get after testing?
We test, record and report, rather than certify dampers to a standard. For each damper it shows the result and anything that needs putting right.
How do you deal with dampers that can’t be reached?
Any damper we cannot reach is listed on the report, so you know exactly what’s outstanding. Fitting an access panel is the usual fix, and we can quote to fit one.
Do you cover Rock?
Yes. We work in Rock and across West Sussex, as part of our work across South East England and London. For a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.
Fixed quotes for fire damper testing in Rock
The price is fixed before any work begins. It’s based on:
- One-off work versus a regular cycle
- Parking and loading at the site
- The times the site is available
- How many systems or sites are involved
A single site or a whole portfolio, we price it on the same basis: the work involved, the access and the timing. You’ll have a fixed price before we start.
Asking for a quote
The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in touch, it helps to send:
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
- The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
- The site address and the type of premises
The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.
What fire damper testing cannot fix
In fairness, some problems need a different fix:
- Designing the building’s fire compartments
- Approving the building’s fire strategy
- Gaps in the wall or floor around the damper
If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think before you book.
Parts of the system we cover
- Hospitals and care homes
- Riser dampers
- Fusible link fire dampers
- Offices and schools
- Wall and floor dampers

Fire damper testing around Rock
About 43 miles out from central London, Rock is part of the South East area we work across. The visit is fixed around your opening hours, not ours. Rock sits within the area of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. When a fire safety officer audits a non-domestic building, maintenance of systems like dampers can come up.
Site managers at schools such as St Mary's CofE Primary School usually find the summer break the easiest time for ceiling work like damper testing. Historic buildings that have had ventilation added later can hide dampers in awkward places; Parham House, about 3.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the area around Rock.
Rock is about 6 miles north of Worthing, in West Sussex. If you need fire damper testing in Rock, please give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form for a fixed quote. We work across South East England and London, Rock included. Our West Sussex coverage runs to 371 places, Rock among them. Brighton is in our area too, around 13 miles away.

Between visits
To keep the system working properly between visits:
- Add new dampers to the register as they’re fitted
- Keep damper test reports with the fire safety log
- Fix water leaks in plant rooms and risers promptly
- Never wedge or tie a damper open
Share the results with your fire risk assessor, so the assessment reflects where the dampers stand. Faults on the report are worth closing off quickly.
Where a damper sits in ductwork that collects dust or grease, keeping that ductwork clean helps. Duct cleaning and damper testing can be planned side by side.

What else we do in Rock
What happens on the day
Everything the job needs comes with us, from protective sheeting to tools and access equipment. You only need to give us clear access and switch off what needs to be off. The visit takes a few hours for a single floor, with bigger buildings phased over more than one visit. Somewhere as small as Rock, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.
- We plan access and timing with you first, including any out-of-hours work.
- Ceiling tiles and hatches are opened and each damper’s access panel removed.
- We release each blade and check it shuts all the way.
- The damper is reset and its condition noted.
- We close everything up and send the results in a report.
Before we arrive
- Clear loose items from the work area
- Mention any parking or loading restrictions
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
Getting a quote
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
