Fire damper testing near Albury

About our fire damper testing in Albury

A drop test is simple in principle: the blade is released, checked for a full close and reset. We do this for buildings in Albury and across Oxfordshire, logging each one so the record builds year on year. If you have smoke dampers with no recent test and dampers clogged with dust or grease, we can put it right.

In a village or hamlet like Albury, there may be only a few buildings with fire dampers. Each damper still needs testing at least once a year.

We’ve been trading since 2009, and we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Oxfordshire. Work can be phased by floor, building or site around the people who use them.

What staff can safely do

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.

Looking after it afterwards

A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:

  • Act on failed dampers rather than leaving them on file
  • Keep cables and fixings away from damper blades
  • Update the register when ductwork changes
  • File every damper report where your assessor can find it

Put the next test in the diary within twelve months. BESA guidance is at least annual testing, so it helps to book it before the date slips.

Keep a damper register: location, type, last test date and result. It stops dampers getting lost as the building changes.

Questions from Albury

Can you test school fire dampers in Albury out of term?

Yes, holiday work suits schools best. With about 2 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Albury, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with the dates the site is empty.

Can the work in Albury be done at night or at weekends?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. It means the site in Albury keeps running as normal. Just call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with your opening times and we’ll plan around them.

What types of premises do you cover?

Commercial premises of every kind: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. Work is timed around how each site runs.

Whose job is it to make sure fire dampers are tested?

The responsible person under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, such as the employer, owner, landlord or managing agent. Keeping fire safety systems working, dampers included, is part of their duty.

What does TR19 mean?

A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It is not law, but it’s the benchmark.

Which accreditations do you hold?

BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We are fully insured and have been trading since 2009.

What paperwork do we get after testing?

Our paperwork is a test report, not a certificate of compliance. For each damper it shows the result and anything that needs putting right.

Do we lose a day’s trading?

Not usually. We need the work area to ourselves while we are on site, so we book a time when it would be closed anyway.

Honest limits

We’d rather tell you now than book work that won’t help, so these are the things it will not cover:

  • Designing the building’s fire compartments
  • Gaps in the wall or floor around the damper
  • Sign-off of the whole building’s fire safety

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we’ll say what we think.

Where we work

  • Hospitals and care homes
  • Offices and schools
  • Motorised smoke dampers
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Riser dampers
  • Wall and floor dampers

What we do, step by step

Night work is normal for us. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. The visit itself takes from an hour or two in a small building to several visits on a large estate. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to Albury and turn up when the site is quiet.

  1. First we look at any damper register, drawings or earlier test reports.
  2. Dampers are located one by one and reached through their access panels.
  3. Every fire damper is dropped, and every smoke damper is tested through its controls.
  4. Each one that passes is reset, ready to work.
  5. The results go into a report, with failed dampers and remedials listed.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions

Getting a quote

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Add the site type and your opening hours, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Advice

What we’re called out for in Albury

Building work often happens right next to dampers. Cables get run through them, links get knocked and blades get wedged open, and any of those can stop a damper closing.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • Fire damper items raised by an assessor
  • Fire dampers with no recent test record
  • Dampers that can’t be reached without an access panel
  • Corroded dampers in damp risers and plant rooms

The nearest hospital, Thame Community Hospital, is about 3.6 miles east; healthcare buildings like it are a reminder that dampers protect people who can’t move quickly.

Questions to ask before booking

  • When they can work, and whether that’s outside your opening hours
  • What’s included in the scope, part by part
  • How they set the interval to the next visit
  • Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor

How we price fire damper testing

Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We look at:

  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
  • Parking and loading at the site
  • The size of the system
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing

Several systems or sites on one quote often makes better use of the time. Mention every system or site you need covered, and you will get one fixed quote.

Helping us quote

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Send what you can of the following:

  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels

There’s no standard price list, because no two systems are the same. We look at your system first, from pictures or on a visit, and then send you a fixed quote. To get going, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos.
