Fixed quotes for fire damper testing in Kidlington

We quote each job individually. This is what makes a difference:

  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • The size of the system
  • How many systems or sites are involved
  • Travel, parking and unloading

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll explain each part.

What we need to know

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site

Quotes are quick. Call or email with a few details and you will typically have a fixed price within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.

How we handle fire damper testing in Kidlington

Ductwork can carry fire and smoke between compartments, and the damper is what stops it. That depends entirely on the blade closing all the way. Regular drop testing is how that gets checked for the dampers in your building. The work covers offices and schools, motorised smoke dampers and hospitals and care homes, and people most often call us about dampers that stick or won’t close fully and dampers that can’t be reached without an access panel.

Buildings around Kidlington may have just a handful of dampers, but each one still needs drop testing at least once a year, with a record of every result.

It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

Honest limits

Not every problem is solved by fire damper testing, and we’d rather say so up front. It does not solve:

  • Dampers that were never installed where they’re needed
  • Signing off a building’s overall fire safety
  • Fire risk assessments, which need a fire risk assessor

If you are not sure, just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will give you a straight answer before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Wall and floor dampers
  • Riser dampers
  • Motorised smoke dampers
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Offices and schools
  • Hospitals and care homes

What we do, step by step

The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, while signing off means the written report and pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. Your opening hours decide when we come to Kidlington, not ours.

  1. We start with whatever records exist: registers, drawings or old reports.
  2. We find every damper and open it up through the access panel.
  3. Every fire damper is dropped, and every smoke damper is tested through its controls.
  4. We reset every damper that passes and check it’s left open.
  5. We report on every damper, with faults and suggested remedials set out.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Clear loose items from the work area

Advice

Keeping the system healthy

Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • File every damper report where your assessor can find it
  • Keep to at least yearly testing
  • Add new dampers to the register as they’re fitted
  • Get remedials done soon after a failed test

Failed dampers are set out separately, each with the fault we found, along with an offer to repair or replace them. After a repair, we retest the damper and update the record.

Deal with leaks and condensation near dampers quickly. Corrosion is a common reason blades stick.

Why it’s worth doing now in Kidlington

Leaving damper testing for another year does not make the dampers any more likely to work. BESA guidance is to test at least annually, so a missed year leaves a gap in the record too. A quieter site near Kidlington still needs its system looked after.

You won’t find a price list here, because each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed quote, and we will explain what it covers.

Buildings like these often have ducted ventilation, and wherever a duct crosses a fire-resisting wall or floor there should be a damper, tested at least once a year. Kidlington is covered by Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Under the Fire Safety Order, the responsible person has to keep fire safety systems, dampers included, in working order, and the fire authority enforces that in most non-domestic premises. Historic houses near Kidlington, with Blenheim Palace about 3.5 miles north-west, are a reminder that older buildings can hold dampers in unexpected places. A school like St Thomas More Catholic Primary School can have any dampers tested over half-term without disturbing lessons.

Questions from Kidlington

Which fire authority looks after Kidlington?

Fire safety enforcement in Kidlington is handled by Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Keep each damper test report with the fire risk assessment and the building’s log book, ready to show.

Can you come to Kidlington after we close?

Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. That way a site in Kidlington doesn’t have to lose a day’s trading. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.

What happens to the waste?

It leaves the site with us when we go. While we work, it’s kept contained to keep the area clean.

Can you price the work without visiting?

Yes, for many jobs. Send a few wide photos plus close-ups of panels, filters or grilles, and we normally come back within one working day. If pictures aren’t enough, we’ll survey first.

What do you do to protect the area?

Floors and surfaces near the work are sheeted before any work starts, and waste is contained as we go. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.

How long does fire damper testing take?

Expect it to take a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. How easily we can reach the dampers makes the most difference, and we’ll give you an idea when we quote.

Do you carry out smoke damper testing?

Yes. We test smoke dampers through their control system, as they’re motor driven. We check every blade moves fully and record the outcome.

Which accreditations do you hold?

Our accreditations are CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The Vent Hygiene Elite scheme is run by BESCA and audited independently.

When to call us in Kidlington

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has a duty to keep fire safety measures working, and dampers are part of those measures. Whoever that is, whether employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent, needs to be able to show the dampers work.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Fire dampers that haven’t been tested for over a year
  • Missing or out-of-date damper records
  • Damper actions from a fire risk assessment
  • Dirty dampers that may not close

Healthcare buildings such as Acland Hospital (about 4.3 miles south) rely on fire compartments, and the dampers in them need testing at least annually.

What staff can safely do

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.

When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.
