Fire damper testing in Abingdon-on-Thames

In a fire, ductwork can act as a shortcut for flame and smoke from one part of a building to the next. A damper only does its job if the blade can drop fully. Regular drop testing is how that gets checked for the dampers in your building. If you have smoke dampers that need testing through their controls and dirty dampers that may not close, we can put it right.

In a town like Abingdon-on-Thames, building owners often first hear about their dampers from a fire risk assessment or a refurbishment. A first test normally starts with tracing the ductwork and recording every damper and its access.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured. On top of that, we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we have been trading since 2009.

What a clean will not put right

In fairness, some problems need a different fix:

  • Ductwork crossing a fire wall with no damper fitted
  • Control wiring problems outside the damper itself
  • Holes around ductwork in fire-resisting walls

If you are not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we will give you a straight answer.

What the work covers

  • Riser dampers
  • Wall and floor dampers
  • Offices and schools
  • Hospitals and care homes
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Motorised smoke dampers

How it works

There’s very little for your team to do on the day. Someone lets us in at the agreed time and shows us where everything is, and the rest is down to us. Before we leave, the area is tidied and the paperwork follows. Photos taken on a phone are typically enough for us to plan a job in Abingdon-on-Thames and give a fixed quote.

  1. We start with whatever records exist: registers, drawings or old reports.
  2. Dampers are located one by one and reached through their access panels.
  3. Every fire damper is dropped, and every smoke damper is tested through its controls.
  4. We reset every damper that passes and check it’s left open.
  5. You get a report listing each damper, its result and any remedials needed.

How to prepare

  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down

Questions from Abingdon-on-Thames

Do you work overnight in Abingdon-on-Thames?

Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. The work in Abingdon-on-Thames can fit around your hours. When you phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos, mention when the site is quiet.

Can you test school fire dampers in Abingdon-on-Thames out of term?

Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. Food Standards Agency records list about 4 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Abingdon-on-Thames. You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with the dates the site is empty.

Where does the waste go?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, including grease, debris and dirty water. We don’t leave it behind.

How much notice should we give?

The more notice, the better, especially for out-of-hours work. We typically quote within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.

How often should fire dampers be tested?

BESA guidance is that fire dampers are tested on completion of installation and at least annually after that. Spring-operated dampers need annual testing as a minimum.

Are you insured?

Yes, we are fully insured. We also hold CHAS and SafeContractor, for sites that check contractor safety.

What is TR19?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. Every job is surveyed first, either from pictures and details you send or on a site visit. A fixed quote follows.

Different parts, different methods

Access panels

If we cannot reach a damper, it goes on the report as inaccessible. Fitting a panel means it can be tested on the next visit.

Fusible link fire dampers

A damaged or painted link can stop a damper doing its job. We check its condition during the test and note anything that isn’t right.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. That is our job.

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We will take a look and give you a fixed quote.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Abingdon-on-Thames

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We work across London and the South East, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept to a regular schedule.

For anyone managing more than one site, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Each site gets its own report and pictures, so each one has its own record.

Leave it or put it right?

Leaving damper testing for another year does not make the dampers any more likely to work. The guidance from BESA is at least once a year, so a missed year leaves a gap in the record too. Nothing in a duct, damper or fan improves by being left.

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we will go through it with you.

Keeping the system healthy

How long the results last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Keep damper test reports with the fire safety log
  • Don’t let hatches get painted shut or boarded over
  • Warn anyone working in ceiling voids about the dampers
  • Keep an eye out for damp around dampers

Make sure trades working in ceilings and risers know where the dampers sit, and ask them not to run cables through or wedge them. If a damper has been disturbed, have it tested again.

Keep a damper register: location, type, last test date and result. It stops dampers getting lost as the building changes.
