Different parts, different methods

Kitchens with long cooking hours

A long-hours kitchen cannot afford a fan failure. Keeping the fan clean is part of avoiding that, and our 24/7 emergency callout is there if it happens anyway.

Inline duct fans

An inline fan can be easy to forget because it’s out of sight. We find it during the survey and include it in the clean.

Extract fan cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Staplecross

Duct Doctor has been cleaning kitchen extract fans since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, we clean to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Common call-outs are for grease stains around the discharge and less air being pulled from the kitchen, across axial fans, in-line fans and discharge points.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, and those horizontal sections are where grease settles. We agree access and timings in advance.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a written report, dated and illustrated with pictures, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

The process

There’s very little for your team to do on the day. A contact on site lets us in at the agreed time and points us to the system, and we take it from there. Afterwards, the area is left tidy and the written report follows. If you can send photos, we can arrive in Staplecross knowing what to expect.

  1. The fan is found and its type, access and isolation checked.
  2. It’s isolated so it cannot run while we work.
  3. Grease is scraped off the impeller blades and casing.
  4. The fan is degreased, taking care around the motor.
  5. We reassemble, run and photograph the fan.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards

Ask for a quote

Quotes are quick. Call or email with a few details and you’ll typically have a fixed price within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

Advice

Between visits

To keep the system working properly between visits:

  • Listen for new noises or vibration from the fan
  • Don’t turn the fan off mid-service
  • Keep each photo report with the maintenance log
  • Book the fan into every full TR19 clean

A full system clean includes a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. If only the fan is cleaned, the photo report says so.

Keep the route to the fan clear. Clear access means it’s never left out of a clean, whether it’s on a roof, in a ceiling or on a wall.

Common problems we fix in Staplecross

Grease builds up unevenly on the blades. The difference throws the impeller off balance and puts strain on the bearings. Left too long, grease turns into wear.

Common reasons sites call us include:

  • Fat spreading onto the roof or wall by the fan
  • Burning smells from the fan area
  • An extract fan with no cleaning record
  • A motor area thick with grease

Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Durhamford Manor is about 2.4 miles south), access may need planning.

FAQs for Staplecross

Do you work in villages like Staplecross?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

Do you work at weekends in Staplecross?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. The work in Staplecross can fit around your hours. Let us know the hours you’re closed and we’ll book within them.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7 for anything that can’t wait until a planned visit. Call us any time and explain what’s happened.

Are you insured?

Yes, fully. CHAS and SafeContractor accreditation sit alongside it for clients who vet their contractors.

How long is a fan clean?

It takes an hour or two for most single fans. Your quote will give an idea.

Who has the legal duty for fire safety?

The law calls them the responsible person. It’s normally the employer, or whoever controls the building, and in shared buildings more than one person can have duties. If you’re not sure, check your lease and fire risk assessment.

What if the fan needs more than a clean?

We also repair and replace extract fans. If we find wear or damage, we will explain it and send you a fixed quote.

What’s the cleaning interval for an extract fan?

The fan follows the full system’s interval at BESA’s minimum intervals for your cooking hours. Readings may show it needs cleaning more often.

For landlords and multi-site operators

Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.

Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we’re happy to quote for all of it.

When it’s something else

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • An impeller that’s bent or split
  • A faulty speed controller or isolator
  • A fan that was never right for the kitchen

If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will say what we think.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Axial fans
  • Centrifugal fans
  • Discharge points
  • Fan housings
  • Roof-mounted fans

How we price extract fan cleaning

There’s no set price list, because sites vary so much. What we look at:

  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
  • How big the system is
  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Problems in a system tend to grow, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you’re not sure what’s needed, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email for straight advice and a fixed quote.

Asking for a quote

Photos and a few facts are often enough to price the work. Useful things to send:

  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • Any previous report or certificate

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, either from pictures and details you send or from a site visit. Then we send a fixed price so you know the cost before any work starts.

What extract fan cleaning looks like in Staplecross

Look up Staplecross on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you will find about 3 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens within about 1.5 miles of central Staplecross. Grease builds up on fan blades and housings in kitchens like these, unbalancing the impeller. Environmental health officers from Rother council inspect food businesses in Staplecross. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Staplecross is covered by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

Term dates shape school work: for a school like Staplecross Methodist Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near St Marks Staplecross, or anywhere in Staplecross, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.
