Extract fan cleaning in Islington

We have been trading since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, we clean to BESA TR19® Grease, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. If you have burning smells from the fan area and thick grease on the impeller and casing, we can put it right, from fan housings, axial fans and roof-mounted fans onwards.

Across London, many commercial kitchens are squeezed into basements and narrow back-of-house spaces, with extract ducts that can climb several floors to discharge at roof level. In Islington, as elsewhere in the capital, a long duct run means more access points to open and more grease to remove.

Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

Leave it or put it right?

A greasy fan has to work harder to move the same air. Airflow at the canopy drops and the kitchen gets hotter and smokier and the motor works harder. For a site in Islington, fitting the work in overnight now is far easier than closing at short notice later.

We do not list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form, and we’ll explain what it covers.

What extract fan cleaning cannot fix

Not every problem is solved by extract fan cleaning, and we will tell you before any work starts. It won’t put right:

  • An undersized fan that can’t cope
  • A motor that has burnt out
  • Grease in the canopy and ductwork

If in doubt, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will say what we think before booking.

Where we work

  • Centrifugal fans
  • Discharge points
  • Roof-mounted fans
  • Axial fans
  • In-line fans
  • Fan housings

Keeping the system healthy

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:

  • Keep access to the fan clear
  • Check filters are seated before cooking
  • File the fan’s report with your other records
  • Watch for grease marks around the outlet

When the fan is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. If only the fan is cleaned, the photo report says so.

Keep the route to the fan clear. A fan that can be reached safely is a fan that gets cleaned, whether it’s on a roof, in a ceiling or on a wall.

What we do, step by step

We turn up at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before we start, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. The work itself takes an hour or two for most single fans. Night and weekend working is normal for us in London, and a site in Islington is no exception.

  1. First we check the fan’s condition and how it sounds.
  2. With the fan isolated, the housing is opened.
  3. Each blade is cleaned so the impeller runs evenly.
  4. We clean the casing, the outlet and around the motor.
  5. We run the fan and note its condition in the photo report.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend

Ask for a quote

Every quote begins with a look at the system, from your photos and details or, where that isn’t enough, a survey on site. Then we send a fixed price, before we start.

FAQs for Islington

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Islington?

London Fire Brigade is the fire and rescue service for Islington. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.

Can you come to Islington after we close?

Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. The work in Islington can fit around your hours. When you call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line, mention when the site is quiet.

Can you clean the fan on its own?

Yes, if the fan needs it. A coated fan often means the duct before it is coated too, but the choice is yours.

How do you protect the area?

Floors and surfaces near the work are sheeted before we start, and waste is contained as we go. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.

Is TR19 cleaning required by law?

No, not in itself. Insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to TR19® as the benchmark, and many insurance policies ask for proof of TR19® cleaning. The law behind it is the Fire Safety Order 2005 in England and Wales.

Do you cover Islington?

Yes. We cover Islington and the rest of Greater London, within our South East and London area. For a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for anything that can’t wait until a planned visit. Ring any time and tell us what’s happened.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Scheduled maintenance plans are part of what we do, set at the interval the system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.

Grease, kitchens and Islington

According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 344 pubs and bars and about 100 hotels and guest houses within about 1.5 miles of central Islington. Breakfasts, bar meals and functions all put grease into the extract wherever they’re cooked. In Islington, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Islington council. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Night work suits London kitchens, and roads and loading bays tend to be quieter too.

Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as King's College Hospital Charity (about 0.7 miles north-west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands. If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near St Mary's Church or elsewhere in Islington, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. A kitchen near Essex Road station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

Different parts, different methods

Inline duct fans

Inline fans can be in tight spaces, so we plan how to reach and clean them. If it can’t be reached fully, the report says so.

Kitchens with long cooking hours

When a busy kitchen’s fan fails, cooking stops. A clean fan is less likely to strain, and our 24/7 emergency callout is there if it happens anyway.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

When the building owner and the occupier are different, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We’re happy to deal with either side and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.
