Kitchen extract cleaning in NW1: how it works

Has the extract gone a while without a clean, or has the paperwork gone missing? Send a few photos of the canopy and filters when you ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line, and we’ll come back with a fixed price for the work in NW1, typically within one working day. The work covers plenums and filters, discharge points and horizontal duct runs, and common reasons people get in touch are a smoky, hot kitchen with weak extraction and an overdue clean flagged by an EHO or fire officer.

We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. Once we are in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the job takes anything from a few hours to a full night, depending on the size of the system.

  1. We survey the system, from your photos or on site, canopy to discharge.
  2. Grease thickness is measured and the price is fixed before work starts.
  3. The kitchen is closed, the equipment cooled and everything nearby protected.
  4. We work through the system from the canopy to the fan and discharge.
  5. We re-test, photograph and send your certificate and photo report.

Part by part

Extract fan and discharge

Some systems have attenuators to cut noise, and they hold grease. We clean what can be reached and note anything that can’t.

Grease filters

A filter that is missing or bent lets grease straight past. Each filter is checked as it goes back in, and flag any that don’t.

Looking after it afterwards

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:

  • Give the canopy a daily wipe
  • Never cook with filters missing or out of place
  • Wash or exchange the filters often
  • Don’t let the canopy gutters overflow

We hand the kitchen back clean, with the sheeting removed and waste taken away. Waste grease and water are contained and removed, so you can start cooking as normal.

Keep the fan on throughout service. Switching it off early leaves vapour to settle on the canopy and plenum, and the next clean has more to do.

Common problems we fix in NW1

It’s common for parts of a duct to have been missed for years. The usual reason is a lack of access panels, so nobody could get to them. Grease in those sections keeps building out of sight.

Clients typically contact us when they notice something like this:

  • A smoky, hot kitchen with weak extraction
  • A kitchen taken over without any extract records
  • Stale cooking odours from the system
  • Extraction mentioned at an environmental health visit

Fixed quotes for kitchen extract cleaning in NW1

Sites vary more than people expect. What affects the quote:

  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
  • Site rules, permits and inductions

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are not sure what’s needed, ring 0345 646 2711 or email us for straight advice and a fixed quote.

What we need to know

Before you ask for a quote, gather:

  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before work begins.

Leave it or put it right?

An overdue clean in NW1 is best dealt with now rather than after the next inspection. The job takes as long as the system needs, from a few hours to several planned visits, and we work evenings, overnight and weekends so you don’t lose a service. Waiting only adds grease and risk.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether the quote is based on a survey or pictures
  • Proof of insurance
  • Whether they recommend a next date
  • What’s included in the scope, part by part

NW1 questions

What is TR19?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.

Will I get a certificate after the clean?

Yes, a TR19 certificate, along with a photo report. The report lists what was cleaned, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next clean is due.

How often does a kitchen extract system need cleaning?

That comes down mainly to daily cooking hours. Heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day calls for a clean at least every 3 months under BESA guidance, and lighter use less often. Your report gives a recommended next clean date.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7 for anything that can’t wait until a planned visit. Call us any time and explain what’s happened.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. One number covers all your sites across London and the South East, and visits can be set on a regular cycle.

When do you clean the extract?

The clean is done when the kitchen isn’t cooking, working evenings, overnight or at weekends to suit you. Equipment needs to be off and cool before any work starts.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. Photos often do the job, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.
