Extract fan cleaning for sites in Hounslow

Kitchen extracts in Hounslow

The FSA’s data shows about 45 pubs and bars and about 13 hotels and guest houses registered within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Hounslow. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. It’s Hounslow council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Hounslow. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after. Hounslow is covered by London Fire Brigade. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

If you cook for passing trade around Hounslow station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer. Bursars and site managers at schools such as Chatsworth Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

Extract fan cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Hounslow

Kitchen extract fans come in different forms: roof-mounted units, inline fans within the duct, and wall fans. The way in depends on the type, and we plan that during the survey. The work covers centrifugal fans, roof-mounted fans and axial fans, and people most often call us about fat spreading onto the roof or wall by the fan and a fan left out of previous cleans.

London kitchens tend to trade late and open early, so work in Hounslow is normally booked for the night or the early hours. Parking, loading and access to the roof are agreed with the building before the night of the clean.

Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

What affects the cost of extract fan cleaning

The diagnosis comes before the price. We look at:

  • Whether several sites go on one quote
  • Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
  • The times the site is available
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids

What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why we survey first, from pictures or on site, and why the quote is fixed before any work starts.

What to send for a quote

We can often survey from photos. Try to include:

  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
  • A few general shots of the system

Want a quote for extract fan cleaning? Please call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and tell us about the site. We will explain what we’d do and send a fixed quote before anything is booked.

The process

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool before work begins, and the area around the work is covered and protected. On site, it takes an hour or two for one fan, longer when it’s hard to reach. Managed blocks in London often need contractors booked in ahead, and we’re happy to deal with the agent directly for a site in Hounslow.

  1. First we check the fan’s condition and how it sounds.
  2. With the fan isolated, the housing is opened.
  3. Each blade is cleaned so the impeller runs evenly.
  4. Housing, outlet and the area around the motor are cleaned.
  5. The fan goes back into service with a report on its condition.

How to prepare

  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Clear loose items from the work area

How the job changes from site to site

Inline duct fans

Hidden in a ceiling void, an inline fan is easily missed. The survey makes sure it’s part of the clean.

Impellers and blades

The impeller is the spinning part that moves the air, and grease builds up on them unevenly. An uneven coating throws it off balance, so it’s cleaned carefully blade by blade.

Aftercare tips

Results last longer with the right care. We suggest:

  • Report grease escaping from the fan
  • Notice when the fan starts to sound different
  • Leave a clear route to the fan
  • Keep the grease filters clean and in place

The photo report shows the fan before and after cleaning. It notes what was done and anything that couldn’t be reached, along with the recommended next clean date.

Fewer grease particles reaching the fan means less build-up. Clean, well-seated filters are the fan’s first protection, and replace any that are damaged.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Every visit ends with a dated report and pictures, so you can show an insurer or inspector what was done at each site.

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.

Hounslow: your questions answered

Do you do school kitchen extract cleaning in Hounslow in the summer holidays?

Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. With about 40 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Hounslow, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with your term dates and we’ll plan around them.

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Hounslow?

Fire safety enforcement in Hounslow is handled by London Fire Brigade. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

What is TR19?

A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It is not legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.

Do you offer extract fan cleaning separately?

Yes, a fan can be cleaned on its own. It’s useful when a fan is noisy or greasy between full cleans, but it doesn’t replace a full TR19 clean.

Do you need to turn the fan off to clean it?

We always isolate the fan first, so it can’t start while we work. With the extract off, the kitchen can’t cook, so we work out of hours.

What about areas you cannot get to?

We record them on the report, with a note of where it is, and we tell you what would make it reachable, for example new access panels.

How long does extract fan cleaning take?

A single accessible fan doesn’t take long, while fans on high roofs or in tight voids take longer. It’s done while the kitchen is closed.

How much notice should we give?

The more notice, the better, especially for out-of-hours work. Quotes typically come back within one working day, and emergencies are covered by our 24/7 line.

Common problems we fix in Hounslow

By the time air reaches the fan, it has passed the canopy, filters and duct. The grease that is left lands on the blades and the casing where the spinning blades spread it around.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • A noisy fan that has got louder over time
  • A smell of hot grease from the extract
  • A fan that has never been cleaned
  • Grease escaping from the fan outlet

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Mary the Virgin, or anywhere in Hounslow, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

What to look for in a quote

  • What records you will receive afterwards
  • Whether the figure could change on the day
  • Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
  • Whether a survey comes first
