Extract fan cleaning in Crystal Palace

Why act early in Crystal Palace

Grease on the impeller makes the fan less efficient. Less air is pulled from the kitchen, so heat and smoke linger, while the motor runs under more strain. It’s better booked as a planned job in Crystal Palace than handled as an emergency.

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Problems in a system tend to grow, which can make the next visit longer. If you are unsure, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

Extract fan cleaning in Crystal Palace

Every TR19® Grease clean includes the extract fan, but some fans need cleaning between full cleans, for example when it’s noisy or vibrating. A fan-only clean is recorded as exactly that. The work covers fan housings, centrifugal fans and roof-mounted fans, and people most often call us about grease escaping from the fan outlet and a fan that hums, whines or rumbles.

London kitchens are often tucked into basements or the back of a building, with extract ducts that can climb several floors to discharge at roof level. In Crystal Palace, as elsewhere in the capital, a long duct run means more access points to open and more grease to remove.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with pictures of the work, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

How the visit works

The first job on site is protection: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. Then we make the system safe and start. It takes a couple of hours per fan, depending on its size and the build-up, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. Getting kit into a London building takes planning, so let us know where we can load and park in Crystal Palace.

  1. The fan is found and its type, access and isolation checked.
  2. It’s isolated so it can’t run while we work.
  3. Grease is scraped off the impeller blades and casing.
  4. Blades, housing and surrounds are degreased with care around the electrics.
  5. We reassemble, run and photograph the fan.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Clear the space around the work

What a clean will not put right

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • A failed motor or worn bearings (that needs a fan repair or replacement)
  • Grease in the duct and canopy before the fan (those need a full TR19 clean)
  • A cracked or broken impeller (it needs replacing)

If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will say what we think before you book.

Crystal Palace kitchens: local notes

The FSA’s data shows about 49 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 4 hotels and B&Bs registered across Crystal Palace and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Crystal Palace is covered by London Fire Brigade. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order. Environmental health officers from Croydon council inspect food businesses in Crystal Palace. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.

Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as St Christopher's Hospice (about 0.6 miles east), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands. A kitchen near Crystal Palace station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval.

FAQs for Crystal Palace

Who carries out food hygiene inspections in Crystal Palace?

In Crystal Palace, it’s Croydon council that carries out food hygiene inspections. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.

Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. The work in Crystal Palace can fit around your hours. Let us know the hours you’re closed and we’ll book within them.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not usually. We need the work area to ourselves while we are on site, so the visit goes in a quiet slot.

How much does extract fan cleaning cost in Crystal Palace?

Size, condition, access and working hours all affect the cost. Ask us for a fixed quote and we will typically reply within one working day.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes, 24/7. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, with the emergency line covering every other hour.

What the work involves, part by part

Fan housings and motors

Belt-driven fans have a drive belt and pulleys that can collect grease. We clean around them and note any wear for your records.

Wall fans

Grease can mark the outside wall around the fan. We clean the fan and check the outlet.

When to call us in Crystal Palace

Poor filters mean a greasier fan. When filters don’t seal, grease goes straight through to the fan, so the fan takes far more than it should.

These are the problems we see most often:

  • Thick grease on the impeller and casing
  • A smell of hot grease from the extract
  • A noisy fan that has got louder over time
  • A fan left out of previous cleans

Term dates shape school work: for a school like Crystal Palace School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.

What your quote should include

  • How VAT is shown on the quote
  • What records you will receive afterwards
  • How areas they can’t reach will be recorded
  • If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

For landlords and multi-site operators

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we’re happy to quote for all of it.

Aftercare tips

Results last longer with the right care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Leave a clear route to the fan
  • Watch for grease marks around the outlet
  • Note any drop in extraction at the canopy
  • Keep the grease filters clean and in place

Keep the report with the maintenance log and fire risk assessment. It gives a dated record of the fan’s condition, which helps if anything changes later.

Stick to the interval for the full extract. A fan cleaned with the rest of the system on time rarely gets badly coated, in line with BESA guidance.
