FAQs for Cooling
Who inspects food businesses in Cooling?
Kitchens in Cooling are inspected by Medway council’s environmental health officers. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.
Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Cooling?
Kent Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Cooling. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.
Can the work be done while we are closed?
Yes. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote and we’ll plan the visit around them.
What if parts of the system cannot be reached?
We record them on the report, with photos where possible, and we explain what access is needed, such as extra access panels in ductwork.
What’s TR19?
TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.
Do you work with multi-site operators?
Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, so sites at different addresses can be planned together as one programme. Every site has its own report.
Do we need to close while you work?
Not normally. We work when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends, so the site can carry on as normal.
Is it safe to clean the fan while the kitchen is open?
The fan is isolated before we open it, so it cannot start while we work. With the extract off, the kitchen can’t cook, so we work out of hours.
Extract fan cleaning in Cooling, done properly
We have been trading since 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We are often asked to deal with thick grease on the impeller and casing and a fan that no longer moves enough air, on roof-mounted fans, in-line fans and axial fans.
Somewhere as small as Cooling, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease, whatever the size of the place.
Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with pictures of the work, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

Multi-site and managed buildings
We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare in Cooling and across Medway. Larger estates can be phased building by building around the people who use them.
Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We are happy to deal with either side, and the report can go to both.
Keeping the system healthy
Simple habits between visits make a real difference. We recommend:
- Note any drop in extraction at the canopy
- Check filters are seated before cooking
- Keep access to the fan clear
- Check the report shows the fan was cleaned
The photo report shows the fan before and after cleaning. It lists what was cleaned and anything we couldn’t reach, along with the recommended next clean date.
Make sure the fan is reachable. Clear access means it’s never left out of a clean, whether it’s on a roof, in a ceiling or on a wall.
What a clean will not put right
In fairness, some problems need a different fix:
- A cracked or broken impeller (it needs replacing)
- A fan that’s too small for the system (a design question)
- A fan that will not start
If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll say what we think before booking.

What we do, step by step
The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. Then we make the system safe and start. The work on site takes an hour or two for one fan, longer when it’s hard to reach, and we clear up before we go. A quick note on how to find the site and where to park makes a visit to Cooling run smoothly.
- Diagnosis first: we look for grease, noise and vibration.
- With the fan isolated, the housing is opened.
- The impeller is cleaned blade by blade so it runs balanced.
- Housing, outlet and the area around the motor are cleaned.
- We run the fan and note its condition in the photo report.
Preparing for the visit
- Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
- Tell us where we can park and unload
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
How to get a quote
For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711 or email us with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. We normally come back within one working day.

Kitchen extracts in Cooling
Cooling is within about 3 miles of the coast. Metal on the roof weathers faster close to the coast, and the extract fan and cowl are no exception. Food Standards Agency records list about 3 restaurants, cafés and canteens within about 1.5 miles of central Cooling. Each kitchen extract among them ends at a fan, and grease on the impeller strains the motor. It’s Medway council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Cooling. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.
A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St James' Church or elsewhere in Cooling, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often. Restoration House, about 4.9 miles south, is one of the historic houses near Cooling; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like French Hospital about 4.8 miles south, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.
Cooling is about 5 miles north of Rochester, in Medway. Sites in Cooling get the same service as everywhere we cover: diagnosis first, a fixed price, out-of-hours working where needed and a written report with photos. We cover 68 places across Medway, large and small. For sites nearby, see our Maidstone page (13 miles or so).

Around Cooling
The closest station to Cooling is Higham station, roughly 3.3 miles south-west of the centre. Well-known places in the area include Upnor Castle (3.4 miles south) and French Hospital (4.8 miles south). Green spaces nearby include Canvey Wick and Gad's Hill.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
What happens if it’s left?
A fan clean in Cooling does not take long: it takes an hour or two for one fan, longer when it’s hard to reach. Leaving it means more wear, more noise and a bigger clean later. Rural sites cannot always move to another kitchen or room when something fails.
Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you’re not sure what’s needed, call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

How the job changes from site to site
Impellers and blades
Coated blades move less air. We clean each blade back to its surface, so the fan can run as intended.
Wall fans
Grease can mark the outside wall around the fan. We clean the fan and check the outlet.
