- Weak extraction at the canopy
- Grease stains around the discharge
What the work involves, part by part
Kitchens with long cooking hours
Kitchens that cook 12 to 16 hours a day put the most grease through their fans. Under BESA guidance, heavy use means cleaning at least every 3 months, fan included.
Fan housings and motors
Belt-driven fans have a drive belt and pulleys that can collect grease. We clean around them and note any wear for your records.
About our extract fan cleaning in Canterbury
We have been trading since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, we clean to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. If you have grease around the motor and its mounts and a heavily greased fan housing, we can help, from in-line fans, centrifugal fans and fan housings onwards.
Town-centre kitchens in a place like Canterbury often sit below flats or offices, and the extract can climb several storeys before it discharges. Vertical risers like that need access panels in the right places, and anything we can’t reach goes on the report.
We’re CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we’re fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we have been trading since 2009.

What else we do in Canterbury
Leave it or put it right?
Grease on the fan is grease in the system. TR19® Grease covers the whole extract, fan included and many insurers require the full system to be cleaned to TR19. The longer a system in Canterbury goes without attention, the more there is to clean or fix.
Combining work into one visit or one programme often makes better use of the time. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you’ll get one fixed quote.

Keeping the system healthy
Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it helps at the next visit:
- Note any drop in extraction at the canopy
- Do not store items in front of the fan’s access point
- Look for grease stains near the discharge
- Report rattles or humming early
The photo report shows the fan before and after cleaning. It lists what was cleaned and anything we couldn’t reach, along with the recommended next clean date.
The fan stays cleaner when less grease gets past the canopy. Clean, well-seated filters are the fan’s first protection, and replace any that are damaged.
How it works
We turn up at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. The work itself takes an hour or two for most single fans. Whoever holds the keys and signs off contractors at your site in Canterbury is the person we need to speak to before the day.
- The fan is found and its type, access and isolation checked.
- It’s isolated so it can’t run while we work.
- We scrape the heavy grease from the blades and housing.
- The fan is degreased, taking care around the motor.
- We reassemble, run and photograph the fan.
Getting ready for the visit
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
- Move anything stored near the system
Ask for a quote
Every quote begins with a look at the system, from your pictures and details or, where that isn’t enough, a survey on site. Then we send a fixed price so you know the cost before work begins.

Your questions about extract fan cleaning in Canterbury
Which fire authority looks after Canterbury?
Fire safety enforcement in Canterbury is handled by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.
Which environmental health team covers Canterbury?
Kitchens in Canterbury are inspected by Canterbury City council’s environmental health officers. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.
How often should the extract fan be cleaned?
The fan follows the full system’s interval at BESA’s minimum intervals for your cooking hours. Readings may show it needs cleaning more often.
How long is a fan clean?
That depends on the fan’s size, its position and how much grease there is. As a guide, it takes a couple of hours per fan, depending on its size and the build-up.
Do you work out of hours?
Yes. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote and we’ll plan the visit around them.
What information do you need?
Only a few details: the address, the site type, your opening hours and how we reach the system. Photos and the last report help too. Then phone us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.
Which kinds of sites do you work on?
All kinds of commercial and public premises: kitchens, offices, schools, healthcare, retail, leisure and food production. We fit the work around how the site operates.
Do you have a 24/7 line?
Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for anything that can’t wait until a planned visit. Call us any time and explain what’s happened.
When to call us in Canterbury
The cooler the air, the more grease drops out, and a fan out on a roof or wall often sits where the air is coolest. So grease often settles heavily there.
Signs it’s time to call us include:
- A fan coated in grease inside its housing
- A fan that has never been cleaned
- Grease escaping from the fan outlet
- Rough running from the extract fan
Where a hall near Church of St Margaret, or anywhere in Canterbury, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.
Comparing quotes
- Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
- Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
- If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate
- When the next visit should be, and why
For landlords and multi-site operators
Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We’re happy to deal with either side and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.
Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We cover South East England and London, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.
Kitchen extracts in Canterbury
There are about 196 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 42 takeaways in Canterbury and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Any of those kitchens with a canopy relies on a fan that gathers grease as it runs. The fire and rescue service for Canterbury is Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. Kitchens in Canterbury get their food hygiene inspections from Canterbury City council. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.
If you run a café or takeaway near Canterbury East station, early starts and late finishes leave little time to clean, so overnight extract cleaning suits. Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Eastbridge Hospital of St Thomas the Martyr (about less than half a mile west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.
