Ductwork cleaning for kitchens and businesses in West Reading
Duct Doctor has cleaned kitchen extract ductwork since 2009, working across London and the South East. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, with each certificate issued through the BESCA portal. If you’re dealing with grease pooling at the foot of the riser and gaps where access panels were never fitted, we can help.
In a smaller place like West Reading, the kitchens with extract systems are more likely to be a pub, a café, a takeaway or a school or care home kitchen than a big restaurant. Quieter kitchens still collect grease in the duct, just more slowly, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.
Insurers, fire officers and environmental health officers all look at records. That is why every job is written up in a report with pictures, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Why it’s worth doing now in West Reading
Under BESA guidance, the mean grease level should stay at or below 200 microns between cleans. A reading of 500 microns or more at any point means a spot clean right away. Putting off the clean only pushes readings higher. A site near West Reading that has to close at short notice is hard to cover for.
Every site is different, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

Grease, kitchens and West Reading
The FSA’s data shows about 56 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 8 hotels and B&Bs registered in West Reading and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. In West Reading, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Reading council. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. The fire and rescue service for West Reading is Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.
Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Mark, or anywhere in West Reading, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Battle School or anywhere near West Reading, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.

Local landmarks in West Reading
We work in commercial kitchens and buildings around The WREN School, Round Copse and The Rose And Thistle Public House, among other places. There’s a railway station in West Reading itself: Reading West station. Well-known places in the area include Battle Hospital (within half a mile north) and Broad Street Mall (0.8 miles east). Not far away are Fobney Island Wetland Reserve and Sonning Hill.
Multi-site and managed buildings
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
If you look after several sites, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Each site gets its own report and photos, so each one has its own record.
What a clean won’t put right
We’d rather tell you now than book work that won’t help, so here are the limits:
- A failed fan motor at the end of the duct (a fan repair job)
- A damper stuck open in the duct
- Duct sections that need replacing
Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.
Parts of the system we cover
- Bends and junctions
- Multi-storey ducts
- Horizontal duct runs
- Access panels
- Attenuators
- Vertical risers
Between visits
Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Keep access panels clear of stored items
- Check readings when the menu changes
- Make sure filters are seated properly
- Keep to the interval on the report
The report names every part of the duct that couldn’t be reached and why. You can then decide whether to have access panels fitted.
Have access panels fitted where sections cannot be reached. It does not stop grease forming, but it stops it building unseen.
How it works
Protection comes first: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. It takes a few hours for a short run, longer for long runs and tall risers, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. Getting to the system matters more than parking in a place like West Reading, so let us know how to reach it.
- We start by working out how the duct runs and where it can be opened.
- Grease readings are taken at set points along the duct.
- Through the access panels, thick grease is removed by hand first.
- The duct is degreased with the method that suits the grease, from degreasers to hot water or steam.
- We test again, take pictures and note any part that couldn’t be reached.
Getting ready for the visit
- Clear loose items from the work area
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
- Tell us where we can park and unload

In-house cleaning or a specialist?
When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We will take a look and send you a fixed quote.
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that is where we come in.
Questions from West Reading
Do you clean school canteen extracts around West Reading out of term?
Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. With about 19 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of West Reading, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.
Which environmental health team covers West Reading?
In West Reading, it’s Reading council that carries out food hygiene inspections. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.
Will I get a report after the ducts are cleaned?
Readings, photos and, for a full clean, a TR19 certificate. It also gives a recommended next clean date.
Are you insured?
Yes. We’re fully insured, and the details are available on request.
Can you price the work without visiting?
Yes, where the photos show enough. Otherwise, we book a survey at a time that suits the site, then a fixed quote.
How do you protect the area?
We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before we start, and anything we remove is contained. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.
What happens if there are not enough access panels?
Without a way in, a section can’t be cleaned properly. Those parts are listed, and we can install panels so they’re reached next time.
Do you work in West Reading?
Yes. We work in West Reading and across Reading, as part of our work across South East England and London. To book, ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos.
What we’re called out for in West Reading
Grease settles fastest where the air slows down. Long horizontal runs, bends, changes in size and the foot of a riser all collect more, and those are the points we pay most attention to.
Keep an eye out for any of the following:
- Duct runs with no cleaning record
- Heavy grease at the base of a riser
- An insurer asking for TR19 evidence
- Sections of duct with no access panels
If you cook for passing trade around Reading West station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer.
What to look for in a quote
- Whether the quote shows VAT
- Whether the figure could change on the day
- When the next visit should be, and why
- Proof of insurance
