Ductwork cleaning in Surrey Canal, done properly
Not every duct has enough access panels. Where a section cannot be reached, TR19 expects it to be recorded on the report, and new panels can be fitted to reach it in future. It’s better to know than to assume. If you’re dealing with a duct nobody has opened in years and grease seeping out of the duct seams, we can put it right, from horizontal duct runs, vertical risers and access panels onwards.
London kitchens are often tucked into basements or the back of a building, with extract ducts that can climb several floors to discharge at roof level. For a kitchen in Surrey Canal, that normally means a longer system to clean and more access panels to plan around.
It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

Why it’s worth doing now in Surrey Canal
Insurers know the risk of a greasy duct. Many require cleaning to TR19, and they can refuse or reduce a claim without proof. A certificate that covers the ductwork is what they want to see. Choosing the date yourself beats having a fault choose it for you.
What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why we survey first, from photos or on site, and the price is agreed before we start.

Ductwork cleaning around Surrey Canal
Food Standards Agency records list about 452 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 311 sandwich bars and takeaways in Surrey Canal and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Each kitchen that cooks under a canopy sends grease-laden air into a duct, where it cools and settles. It’s Southwark council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Surrey Canal. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Night work suits London kitchens, and roads and loading bays tend to be quieter too.
Bursars and site managers at schools such as Ilderton Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. If you cook for passing trade around South Bermondsey station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.
When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.
Honest limits
Some problems need a different service or another trade:
- Duct sections that need replacing
- Ductwork that was poorly designed
- A failed fan motor at the end of the duct (a fan repair job)
Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will tell you honestly.
What the work covers
- Vertical risers
- Attenuators
- Multi-storey ducts
- Bends and junctions
- Horizontal duct runs
- Access panels
Between visits
A little care between visits keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:
- Keep your cleaning records together
- Consider fitting panels where the report shows gaps
- Keep to the interval on the report
- Make sure filters are seated properly
Access panels are closed and sealed back up after cleaning, and the surrounding area is left clean. Waste grease and water are taken away.
Keep to the cleaning interval on the report. If the kitchen starts cooking longer hours, the interval may need to shorten, and grease thickness testing will show it.
How the visit works
We turn up at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. On site, it takes anything from a few hours to several visits, depending on the length of duct. Many London buildings have a managing agent, a security desk or a permit-to-work system, so tell us who to contact in Surrey Canal.
- We start by working out how the duct runs and where it can be opened.
- Set points along the runs are tested for grease.
- Access panels are opened and heavy deposits scraped out by hand.
- Horizontal runs and risers are then degreased by the method that suits the deposit.
- We test again, take photos and note any part that couldn’t be reached.
Preparing for the visit
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards

What the work involves, part by part
Attenuators and discharge
The last section of duct before the discharge is often the coolest, so it can collect more grease than expected. It’s tested and cleaned along with the rest.
Vertical risers
A riser takes the duct up through one or more floors. Grease collects on the walls and at the foot of the riser, which is one of the points we test.
Do you need ductwork cleaning in Surrey Canal?
Damaged or poorly fitted filters let more grease into the duct. The duct then takes grease that the filters should have stopped, and build-up speeds up.
The symptoms we’re asked about most include:
- An insurer asking for TR19 evidence
- Grease seeping out of the duct seams
- Stale grease odours from the duct
- Duct runs with no cleaning record
Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; New Cross Hospital is the nearest hospital to Surrey Canal, about 0.5 miles south.
Questions to ask before you book
- When the next visit should be, and why
- How areas they cannot reach will be recorded
- Exactly which parts of the system are covered
- Whether the quote shows VAT
Surrey Canal questions
Which council inspects kitchens in Surrey Canal?
That is Southwark council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in Surrey Canal. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.
Do you work at weekends in Surrey Canal?
Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. Your customers, staff or residents in Surrey Canal needn’t be disturbed. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.
Will we have to shut during the visit?
Normally not. Booking the work out of hours means the site can carry on as normal. Larger jobs can be phased over several visits to keep things running.
What happens to the waste?
Anything we remove is contained as we work and taken away with us, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. We do not leave it behind.
Will I get a report after the ducts are cleaned?
Every clean comes with a photo report, and a full TR19 clean also comes with a certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. File them with the fire risk assessment.
Can extra access doors be added to the duct?
Yes, we fit access panels where the duct needs them. That lets the next clean reach sections that were missed, and the report will show where they’re needed.
What about areas you can’t get to?
Anything we cannot reach goes on the report, with photos where possible, and we tell you what would make it reachable, for example new access panels.
What happens if there aren’t enough access panels?
Any section we cannot reach is recorded on the report, in line with TR19. We can fit new access panels so they’re cleaned next time.
