How we handle ductwork cleaning in Medstead

Every duct has its own route. A few metres to an outside wall, or a riser up through the building to a roof fan. The survey traces the route, so we know where to get in and how long it will take. We’re often asked to deal with a rancid smell from the extract duct and hardened, baked-on grease in long horizontal runs, across multi-storey ducts, bends and junctions and horizontal duct runs.

In a smaller place like Medstead, many kitchens sit in older buildings or later extensions, where the duct may cross a roof void or climb an outside wall. Flat runs collect grease and need proper access to clean.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with pictures of the work, plus a certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal when the work is a TR19® Grease clean. It shows what was done and what, if anything, couldn’t be reached.

Why it’s worth doing now in Medstead

Fire inside a duct is out of sight and out of reach. It can travel through the ductwork to other parts of the building, so cleaning the duct is as important as cleaning the hood. It’s easy to lose track of when the work was last done on a quieter site.

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Call for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.

How the visit works

The first job on site is protection: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes a few hours for a short run, longer for long runs and tall risers, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. Evenings, weekends or a closed day all work for a site in a place like Medstead.

  1. First the duct route is traced and every access point noted.
  2. Grease readings are taken at set points along the duct.
  3. Access panels are opened and heavy deposits scraped out by hand.
  4. The duct is degreased with the method that suits the grease, from degreasers to hot water or steam.
  5. Readings and pictures are repeated and any section we couldn’t reach is recorded.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Find the previous report, if there is one

How to get a quote

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Add the site type and your opening hours, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Looking after it afterwards

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:

  • Keep the fan on while anything is cooking
  • Book the next clean before the recommended date
  • Get panels fitted where the duct couldn’t be cleaned
  • Check readings when the menu changes

After the clean, the same points are tested again, so the report shows the before and after figures. Photos of each section go alongside them.

Book the next duct clean before the date passes. If the kitchen starts cooking longer hours, the interval may need to shorten, and grease thickness testing will show it.

What a clean won’t put right

Before booking, it helps to know what’s not included:

  • A failed fan motor at the end of the duct (a fan repair job)
  • Faulty fire dampers
  • Parts of the duct with no way in

Not sure which it is? You can call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

What the work covers

Medstead questions

Can you come to Medstead after we close?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. Your customers, staff or residents in Medstead needn’t be disturbed. Let us know the hours you’re closed and we’ll book within them.

Which fire service covers Medstead?

That’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

Where does the waste go?

It’s contained and taken away. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go, so it doesn’t spread.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes, every time. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey shows what needs doing and what access we need, and the quote is based on that.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, so sites at different addresses can be planned together as one programme. Each site gets its own report and photos.

How much notice should we give?

It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and if it’s an emergency, call us any time.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not typically. We need the work area to ourselves while we’re on site, so we book a time when it would be closed anyway.

How long will the duct clean take?

Allow a few hours for a short run, longer for long runs and tall risers. We will confirm the time when we quote.

Ductwork cleaning in Medstead: the local picture

Environmental health officers from East Hampshire council inspect food businesses in Medstead. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after. Medstead is about 49 miles from central London, well within the area we cover across London and the South East. The visit is fixed around your opening hours, not ours.

School kitchens, at schools like Medstead Church of England Primary School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. Bentworth Hall, about 2.1 miles north, is one of the historic houses near Medstead; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Alton Community Hospital about 3.1 miles north-east, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

Medstead is about 4 miles south-west of Alton, in Hampshire. Sites in Medstead get the same service as everywhere we cover: diagnosis first, a fixed price, out-of-hours working where needed and a written report with photos. Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Whether it’s one building or many, you get the same standard: the system surveyed, the price fixed, the visit fitted around trading and everything written up afterwards.

Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We’re happy to deal with either side, and the report can go to both.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that’s where we come in.

What affects the quote in Medstead

The diagnosis comes before the price. The main factors are:

  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
  • Travel, parking and unloading

No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all make a difference.

Helping us quote

There’s no need for technical detail. It helps if you can send:

  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings
  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles

Here’s what helps us quote: the address, the type of site and when it’s open, photos of the system and the last certificate or report, if there is one. Once you have those, call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.
