Ductwork cleaning around Kew

Food Standards Agency records include about 64 pubs, bars and clubs and about 10 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses across Kew and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Fire safety in Kew falls to London Fire Brigade. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises. In London, kitchens are usually cleaned overnight, when the kitchen is closed and loading is easier.

Where a hall near St Paul's Church, or anywhere in Kew, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. For kitchens close to Chiswick station, where the day often starts early and ends late, the extract can be cleaned overnight.

Ductwork cleaning in Kew

We treat ductwork like a doctor treats arteries: find the blockages, clear them, then check the flow is right. Readings taken before and after show the difference, alongside before and after pictures. If you’re dealing with an insurer asking for TR19 evidence and grease pooling at the foot of the riser, we can help.

London kitchens tend to trade late and open early, so extract cleaning in Kew is usually done overnight, after the last service. Before the clean, we agree loading, parking and roof access with whoever manages the building.

It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

Honest limits

To be straight with you, there are a few things this work won’t fix:

  • Duct sealed behind fixed ceilings or walls
  • Undersized or badly laid-out ducts
  • Leaking duct joints that need repair

If you’re not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Bends and junctions
  • Multi-storey ducts
  • Horizontal duct runs
  • Vertical risers
  • Access panels
  • Attenuators

What we are called out for in Kew

Many ducts do not have enough access panels. Stretches with no way in may never have been touched, and the grease there keeps building out of sight.

Look out for any of the following:

  • Fat dripping from the ductwork
  • Ductwork that has never been cleaned
  • High readings at a recent grease test
  • A duct clean needed for an insurer

Bursars and site managers at schools such as Grove Park Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

What your quote should include

  • Whether the quote shows VAT
  • Whether the price is fixed
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • Whether they’re fully insured

Our hiring checklist

What happens on the day

Each visit runs to the same pattern: protect the area, isolate whatever needs isolating, do the work, tidy up and leave you the report. On site, the work takes anything from a few hours to several visits, depending on the length of duct. In a London area like Kew, parking, loading and building access are planned before the day of the work.

  1. We start by working out how the duct runs and where it can be opened.
  2. We measure grease thickness at set points before cleaning.
  3. Access panels are opened and heavy deposits scraped out by hand.
  4. The duct is degreased with the method that suits the grease, from degreasers to hot water or steam.
  5. Readings and pictures are repeated and any section we couldn’t reach is recorded.

Preparing for the visit

  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site

Ask for a quote

To get a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few pictures and your last certificate or report help a lot. We typically come back within one working day.

Related advice

Keeping the system healthy

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Consider fitting panels where the report shows gaps
  • Tell us if grease leaks from the ductwork
  • File each certificate and photo report in the maintenance log
  • Leave a way through to the access panels

You will have a recommended date for the next clean, based on the readings and your daily cooking hours, in line with BESA guidance.

Run the extract the whole time the kitchen is cooking. When the air stops, grease settles in the duct, so switching off early adds to the build-up.

What the work involves, part by part

Access panels

Access panels are the doors that let us into the duct. Without them, parts of the duct can’t be reached, and TR19 expects them to be recorded.

Multi-storey and shared buildings

In a building with several floors, the duct may pass other tenants’ spaces. Access is planned with the building’s managers, so the clean is done safely and quietly.

Multi-site and managed buildings

Whether it’s one building or many, the standard is the same: diagnosis, a fixed price, work booked around your hours and a written report with photos.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

What staff can safely do

Staff cleaning does not replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We will take a look and send you a fixed quote.

Kew: your questions answered

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Kew?

It’s London Fire Brigade, which covers Kew. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Which council inspects kitchens in Kew?

That’s Richmond-Upon-Thames council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in Kew. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.

Can you clean ductwork with no access panels?

We clean everything we can reach and record what we cannot. Fitting extra access panels is the usual answer, and we can do that for you.

What paperwork do you give after a duct clean?

You get a photo report with before and after pictures, and a full TR19 clean also comes with a certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. File them with the fire risk assessment.

What does TR19 mean?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.

Will the duct clean disrupt the kitchen?

When the kitchen is closed. Long ducts can be split across visits, with the kitchen ready to cook each morning.

How much notice should we give?

Earlier is better, particularly for night and weekend visits. We normally quote within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.

How long does ductwork cleaning take?

A short duct can be cleaned in a few hours, while long ducts and tall risers can need more than one visit. Visits are planned out of hours.
