How we handle canopy cleaning in Kew

Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we’re fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. If you are dealing with a plenum thick with grease behind the filters and a sticky, discoloured canopy, we can put it right, from baffle filters, plenum chambers and wall canopies onwards.

Kitchens in Kew, like many across London, can share a building with flats or offices, with the duct running up through shared risers. Grease in a duct like that is a fire risk to the whole building, not just the kitchen, so a regular TR19® clean protects everyone in it.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Kew

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

Whether it’s one building or many, the standard is the same: the system surveyed, the price fixed, the visit fitted around trading and everything written up afterwards.

Part by part

School and staff canteen kitchens

School and canteen kitchens often cook to set hours, so the canopy can be cleaned when the kitchen is closed. Holidays and weekends work well.

Island canopies

Island canopies hang over cooking in the middle of the kitchen, so every face can collect grease. Each face is cleaned inside and out.

How the visit works

We start by comparing what we find with the survey or your photos. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. After that, the work takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. Most London sites cannot stop for the day, so work in Kew is usually done overnight, early in the morning or at weekends.

  1. First the canopy is surveyed, by photos or in person.
  2. Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and pictures are taken.

How to prepare

  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive

How to get a quote

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Grease, kitchens and Kew

There are about 287 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 80 takeaways and sandwich shops in Kew and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Wherever there’s a canopy over the cooking, its hood and plenum collect grease with every service. London Fire Brigade covers Kew. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. Overnight is the normal time to clean a London kitchen extract, so trading is not affected.

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near St Paul's Church, or anywhere in Kew, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. Commuter trade near Chiswick station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands. A hospital like Barnes Hospital, about 1.5 miles south-east, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.

Kew is about 2 miles south of Acton, in Greater London. Wherever you are in the W4 postcode area, we can carry out canopy cleaning at your premises. 764 places in Greater London are on our list, from busy centres to quieter spots. You can also see our page for London, about 8 miles away.

Canopy cleaning in W4, TW9 and TW8 is surveyed, quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. If you need canopy cleaning at premises on Kew Road, Maze Road and Kent Road or a nearby road, we can help. Being close to the A3000, Kew is easy for our technicians to reach for canopy cleaning. Nearby, we also carry out canopy cleaning in Strand-on-the-Green (1 mile north), Grove Park (1 mile east), North Sheen (1 mile south), Gunnersbury (1 mile north) and Turnham Green (1 mile east). Larger places within reach include London (8 miles east), City of Westminster (6 miles east), Marylebone (6 miles north-east), Kensington (3 miles east), St Pancras (7 miles north-east) and Shoreditch (9 miles east).

What’s near Kew

We work in commercial kitchens and buildings around Library for Iranian Studies, Kew Green and Chiswick School, among other places. Kew’s nearest station is Chiswick station, roughly 0.5 miles south-east of the centre. A little further out are Livat Hammersmith (2.2 miles east) and Barnes Hospital (1.5 miles south-east). Not far away are Kew Gardens Lake and Duke's Hollow.

When it’s something else

Canopy cleaning cannot fix everything, and we will tell you before we start. It doesn’t solve:

  • A dirty extract fan further along the system
  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
  • Filters that no longer seal in the housing

If you’re not sure, just call 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will give you a straight answer.

What the work covers

  • Plenum chambers
  • Canopy light fittings
  • Baffle filters
  • Island canopies

FAQs for Kew

Can the work in Kew be done at night or at weekends?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. The work in Kew can fit around your hours. Just call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos with your opening times and we will plan around them.

Who carries out food hygiene inspections in Kew?

In Kew, it’s Richmond-Upon-Thames council that carries out food hygiene inspections. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

Can you look after several sites?

Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, so we can schedule a run of sites as one programme. Each site gets its own report and pictures.

How much does canopy cleaning cost?

It depends on the site, so we quote each one individually. To get one, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and tell us about the site and its opening hours.

Do you clean canopies in all kinds of kitchens?

We clean canopies in commercial kitchens of every kind. Whatever is cooked under it, the canopy is cleaned the same thorough way, with the equipment off and cool.

Are you insured?

Yes. Duct Doctor is fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.

Do you work in Kew?

Yes. We cover Kew and the rest of Greater London, as part of our work across South East England and London. For a fixed quote, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.

Does a canopy clean meet TR19?

Canopy cleaning is part of TR19, not the whole of it. We will make clear on the report which parts were cleaned, so your records stay accurate.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. That is our job.

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.

Why deal with it now?

If the canopy waits for the next full clean, grease keeps adding up. Some kitchens need the canopy cleaning more often than the whole system, and readings or a look behind the filters will show it. Shared walls, risers and roofs mean a problem at one London site seldom stays put.

What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why every job is surveyed first, and why the quote is fixed before any work starts.

Aftercare tips

To keep the system working properly between visits:

  • Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy
  • Refit filters the right way round and fully seated
  • Run the extract the whole time you are cooking
  • Wash or exchange the filters on a regular cycle

A before and after photo report follows the clean. It notes what was cleaned and anything we couldn’t reach, so the record is honest and complete.

Run the extract for as long as anything is cooking. Turning the fan off early lets vapour settle on the hood.
